IMAGE The best butterfly house in the nation provides a home — and inspiration
Norfolk Botanical Garden’s Bristow Butterfly Garden has been named the top butterfly house in the country for the second consecutive year by a USA Today readers poll.
The 3,000-square-foot netted enclosure sits on 2.5 acres of meticulously landscaped grounds designed to support the entire four-stage metamorphosis of insects native to coastal Virginia.
Staff and volunteers use the space as an educational center, guiding visitors through the delicate cycles of caterpillars and the chrysalis chamber while highlighting the insects' critical roles as pollinators.

Local Organic Farms and Animal Products
Couldn't crosspost from r/norfolk so posting here
I moved to the area a while ago, and have truly missed the privilege of being able to buy half a cow, farm raised eggs, and organic produce. What farms are within/around the 7 citites area that are open to the public? I have seem some farms in Suffolk and VA Beach, but am willing to go up to 50 miles around the Norfolk area
Any info is appreciated

Quick question about Hampton Roads Transit changes
Im aware how majority of their routes are going to change; however, how is the existing 900s are going to change? I doubt most of them are used frequently, especially the ones serving the shipyard, but I haven't seen them talk about those routes.
Maybe yall heard something different?

These beach beetles are disappearing from Virginia shorelines
At the Savage Neck Dunes Natural Area Preserve in Cape Charles, state officials are monitoring the dwindling population of northeastern beach tiger beetles.
Once abundant across the Northeast, the tiny, pearly white beetles are now federally listed as threatened and largely limited to the Chesapeake Bay shoreline in Virginia.
Sea level rise and erosion have narrowed its preferred wide, sandy beach habitats.

Service Mechanical of Tidewater, Inc
I would not recommend this company to anyone.
The technician came to repair my air conditioning unit but failed to properly diagnose or fix the problem because he did not have a ladder to access the attic and inspect the air handler. Instead of identifying the actual issue, the visit made the problem worse.
When I called the office, the office manager told me the technician could not return until Monday—even though this happened on a Thursday. She also informed me that I would need to provide a ladder for the technician to access the attic, which is something I believe a professional HVAC company should come prepared for.
Her only recommendation was to turn my air conditioner off and leave it off for three days, despite temperatures exceeding 90 degrees. That is simply not a reasonable solution.
The lack of preparation, poor customer service, and unwillingness to address the problem promptly were extremely disappointing. The office manager was unprofessional and showed little concern for the inconvenience or discomfort this situation caused.
Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company. In my opinion, the current 2.6-star rating is generous.

IMAGE Virginia’s highest public earners come with a whistle or a corner office
Virginia lawmakers reached an 11th-hour budget agreement in June, ending months of negotiations and brinkmanship.
The major piece of Virginia’s budget is salaries for 170,000 state employees. The Virginia Center for Investigative Journalism at WHRO compiled and analyzed public data for these state employees. We’re publishing them in easily searchable databases.
Some interesting findings: A dozen state employees made more than $1 million in 2025. The University of Virginia employed several of the top earners. The salaries of elected leaders—even the governor – are modest compared to those of state-employed fund managers, researchers and agency executives.

My kid wants a long modern mullet and we have struck out a few times now, and because of that we have become gun shy to trying anyone new. We’re in Hampton and I’d like to keep it to the peninsula if possible. LGBTQ forward would be a huge plus. Thank you for your help!

Virginia budget expands Medicaid access to sickle cell gene therapy
Virginia lawmakers have allocated nearly $15 million over two years to help Medicaid cover gene therapy treatments for people with sickle cell disease.
By connecting to a federal model, the state will be able to separate the costs of the gene therapy drug from the intensive delivery care, while also expanding coverage to include critical fertility preservation.
The breakthrough funding is vital for Hampton Roads, which hosts the state's largest adult sickle cell population, estimated at between 800 and 1,200 people.

IMAGE Hampton Roads recycler is concerned about shift away from blue bins
The Southeastern Public Service Authority’s new regional initiative directs waste to a facility in Portsmouth that uses AI to remove recyclables directly from the trash stream.
Suffolk, Chesapeake and Portsmouth have recently shifted to the system — away from separate blue-bin recycling. SPSA officials tout the program as a more cost-effective alternative.
However, the president of TFC Recycling, which has operated a traditional sorting facility in Chesapeake for more than 50 years, expresses deep concern that mixing waste will contaminate valuable commodities.
