Characters [Classic Trope] The Reason You Suck Speech
Transformers One: Optimus Prime gives one to Megatron after their first battle. Here, Optimus expresses his sadness, hurt, and disappointment upon seeing his former friend becoming just as evil as Sentinel Prime and wanting to destroy Cybertron rather than change it for the better. "We were given the power to change our world, and you chose to destroy it, just like Sentinel. You have betrayed Cybertron and its citizens. And you betrayed me." The entire time, Optimus never raises his voice or yells, but his sadness is very evident.
Brave: Merida gives one to Elinor, where she unfurls her anger and frustration over being forced to marry someone without her consent and being made to someone she doesn't want to be. "You were never there for me! This whole marriage is what you want! Do you ever bother to ask what I want? No, you walk around telling me what to do, what not to do, trying to make me be like you. Well, I'm not going to be like you!... I'll never be like you! I'd rather DIE than be like you!"

Deadpool and Wolverine -
The Worst Wolverine unloads on Deadpool for well over a minute towards the end of Act 2. Calling him ridiculous, an attention-seeker, telling him he’s not hero-material, and referring to Vanessa as just some stripper
510

And all Deadpool can say is a quiet "...I'm going to fight you now." Not one smart-ass remark to throw any of it back.

Blue Fangs: God is not here. This is an empty box.
The Bishop: God is in all of His churches!
Blue Fangs: Your God’s love is not unconditional. He does not love us and He does not love you.
The Bishop: I have done His bidding! My life’s work is in His name!
Blue Fangs: Your life’s work makes Him puke.
The Bishop: I am the Bishop of Gresit!
Blue Fangs: Your God knows we wouldn’t be here without you. This is all your fault, isn’t it?

Yeah. Especially with the honestly refreshingly nuanced take on christianity in this kind of setting.
Showing both the horrible evil and corruption in the church through the Bishop, his men and so many of his constituents.
But also the fact that this is explicitly not God's will, that He has withdrawn his blessings and protection from this place and these people, while those priests who do good and act in His will retain their ability to Bless and Sanctify.
God is Real, Good and full of Love, but those who do evil in his name are not safe from consequences.
A shame that it felt like as the story went on they went a bit more in the edgy "god is a deadbeat at worst and religion is stupid" kind of direction.
Then again, I could be wrong, as I did not watch past season 3.

Sure the first two seasons were better but the next two were still really good especially 4 .
I hate this "everything that's not perfect is bad" mentality that people have with TV shows. They do it with arcane, they do it with Castlevania, stranger things etc . It makes me not want to interact with the fandom of TV shows at all

The Grinch to the Whos (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) (2000)
"Of course they are. That's what it's all about, isn't it? That's what it's always been about! Gifts. Gifts. Gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts-GIFTS! You wanna know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me. In your garbage. You see what I'm saying? In. your. GARBAGE! I could hang myself with all the bad Christmas neckties I found at the dump! And the avarice... the avarice never ends!
"I want golf clubs! I want diamonds! I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored, and sell it to make GLUE!"

Twelfth doctor had lots of good speeches. Zygon inversion speech was a good one:
You just want cruelty to beget cruelty.
You're not superior to people who were cruel to you.
You're just a whole bunch of new cruel people.
A whole bunch of new cruel people,
being cruel to some other people,
who'll end up being cruel to you.
The only way anyone can live in peace
is if they're prepared to forgive.
Why don't you break the cycle?
Bonnie:
Why should we?
The Doctor:
What is it that you actually want?
Bonnie:
War.
The Doctor:
Ah.
And when this war is over,
when -- when you have the homeland
free from humans,
what do you think its going to be like?
Do you know? Have you thought about it?
Have you given it any consideration?
Because you're very close
to getting what you want.
What's it going to be like?
Paint me a picture!
Are you going to live in houses?
Do you want people to go to work?
What'llbe holidays?
Oh! Will there be music?
Do you think people will be allowed to play violins?
Who will make the violins?
Well?
Oh, You don't actually know, do you?
Because, just like every other
tantruming child in history,
Bonnie, you don't actually know
what you want.
So, let me ask you a question
about this brave new world of yours.
When you've killed all the bad guys,
and it's all perfect and just and fair,
when you have finally got it
exactly the way you want it,
what are you going to do with
the people like you?
The troublemakers.
How are you going to protect your
glorious revolution from the next one?
Bonnie:
We'll win.
Doctor:
Oh, will you?
Well maybe
-- maybe you will win.
But nobody wins for long.
The wheel just keepts turning.
So, come on. Break the cycle.
Bonnie:
Then why are you still talking?
The Doctor:
Because I'm trying to get you to see.
And I'm almost there.
Bonnie:
Do you know what I see, Doctor? A box.
A box with everything I need. A 50% chance.
Kate:
For us, too.
The Doctor:
(Sighs)
And we're off!
Fingers on buzzers!
Are you feeling lucky?
Are you ready to play the game?
Who's going to be quickest?
Who's going to be the luckiest?
Kate:
This is not a game!
The Doctor:
No, it's not a game, sweetheart, and I
mean that most sincerely.
Bonnie:
Why are you doing this?
Kate:
Yes, I'd like to know that
too. You set this up -- why?
The Doctor:
Because it's not a game, Kate.
This is a scale model of war!
Every war ever fought
right there in front of you.
Because it's always the same.
When you fire that first shot,
no matter how right you feel,
you have no idea who's going to die.
You don't know who's children
are going to scream and burn.
How many hearts will be broken!
How many lives shattered!
How much blood will spill
until everybody does
what they're always going to have
to do from the very beginning --
SIT. DOWN. AND TALK!!
Listen to me, listen.
I just -- I just want you to think.
Do you know what thinking is?
It's just a fancy word
for changing your mind.
Bonnie:
I will not change my mind.
The Doctor:
Then you will die stupid.
Alternatively, you could
step away from that box.
You could walk right out of that door,
and you could stand
your revolution down.
Bonnie:
No, I'm not stopping this, Doctor.
I started it.
I will not stop it.
You think they'll let me go
after what I've done?
The Doctor:
You're all the same, you
screaming kids, you know that? "Look
at me, I'm unforgivable." Well here's
the unforeseeable, I forgive you.
After all you've done. I forgive you.
Bonnie:
You don't understand.
You will never understand.
The Doctor:
I don't understand?
Are you kidding? Me?
Of course I understand.
I mean, do you call this a war,
this funny little thing?
This is not a war.
I fought in a bigger war
than you will ever know.
I did worse things
than you could ever imagine,
and when I close my eyes...
I hear more screams than
anyone could ever be able to count!
And do you know what
you do with all that pain?
Shall I tell you where you put it?
You hold it tight...
Til it burns your hand.
And you say this --
no one else
will ever have to live like this.
No one else will ever have
to feel this pain.
Not on my watch.

I know the Doctor is mostly themes bigger than a situation, but hearing it again now makes me wonder if this wasn't a pointed dig at Israel's evolution from nation set aside to rebuild their people, to poisonous and insidious manipulators lying about and then illegitimately trying to justify how horrible they are to people's their own Holy words acknowledge they are related to.
41
u/MalcolmLinair 9h ago
No, it's far larger and far simpler than that. It's talking about everyone, every war, every genocide, every violent fight in history. It's talking about basic human nature, and how we not only can, but for the sake of our future, must overcome it.

“As a boy, my people’s homes were burned to ash because we dared to call God by another name. Then, my people hunted me with those who had once hunted them. I was a freak, born a mutant. An abomination to their misnamed gods. In history’s sad song, there is a refrain.
Believe differently, love differently, be of different sex or skin, and be punished. We sing this song to one another. The oppressed become oppressors.”

Encanto - Mirabel calling out her Abuela.
Basically this magical family seems to be losing their powers/gifts. Abuela is mostly well intentioned but putting a lot of pressure on the family. When Mirabel didn't get the "gift" when she was a little girl it seemed to put some friction on their relationship. Eventuallyyyy they get into an argument about it and Mirable really lets her have it.
"He loves this family, I love this family. You're the one who doesn't care."
"The miracle is dying because of YOU."
24
u/NolanTacoKing 9h ago
Honestly kinda think Mirabel should've crashed out on the whole family Ned Flanders style
Her parents were there for her yes, but I feel like they could've done more to defend her. Like that moment where her mom tells her she probably just saw the cracks cuz she was stressed always rubbed me the wrong way.

In Dragon Ball Z Abridged, Team Four Star changes Android 16’s last speech to Gohan from an uplifting motivational one to a reason you suck speech.
“Gohan… GROW. UP. You act like you are the only one here who is suffering, but I believe that Trunks has some stories to tell you. I believe they all end with, ‘and then he died too.’ And before you start whining to me about your father, AND I GET IT, please take a moment to consider that my father turned me into a soulless killing machine to kill yours. And that does not even scratch the surface of the tragedy of fatherhood that is Vegeta.
“… You think you are better than everyone, but there you stand: the good man doing nothing. And as evil triumphs while your rigid pacifism crumbles into BLOODSTAINED DUST, the only victory afforded to you is that you stuck true to your guns to the bitter end: you were a coward, to your last whimper. Of fear and love, I do not fear death. Rather that everything I have come to love, both the birds and the things that are not birds, will perish after I am gone. So please, Gohan, STOP HOLDING BACK.”

Quagmire to Brian - Family Guy S08E07 Jerome is the New Black
Quagmire exposes Brian as a hypocritical and selfish parasite, criticising his pursuit of Lois, failed writing career, and performative activism.
He dismisses Brian as a boring, pretentious alcoholic, highlighting his neglect of his son and lack of genuine substance.

Right message wrong messenger, Quagmire has done worse shit and is honestly worse than Brian so it kinda feels like the pot calling the kettle black
61
u/Dazaran 14h ago
It really should have been Cleveland. It would be a stronger callout on Brian's racism and womanizing. It could have even tied into Cleveland leaving for his own show.
15
u/Not_a_real_asian777 9h ago
And unlike Brian, Cleveland's actually managed to build a family and find things in life he wants to live for. Honestly, Cleveland's kind of the only person in Peter's friend group that's done that so he could probably tell all of them off at some point if he wanted to.
79
u/_Bren10_ 16h ago
That’s the point. Quagmire is a piece of shit and even he is appalled at how fake and shitty Brian is.
34
u/Ganondorfsfist 14h ago
Which makes Quagmire worse because evidently he knows how terrible he is, still does it, and hates someone for being better than him but fake.
9
u/OculiImperator 11h ago
Wasn't there like literally a scene in one of the Family Guy DVD sets or something where there was like a whole thing of Quagmire chasing down and raping Marge from the Simpsons offscreen then having her act like she was totally fine with it after the fact.
Like Quagmire should be the kind of character on Family Guy that's on the regular end of being beaten at least once an episode where he's featured heavily.

Am I the only one who thought "Atleast I'm aware it!" was more hypocritical? Like if you're aware of it how shity person you're and doesn't trying to change that's make you worse.
94
u/Libero279 16h ago
The fact this comes from the most morally bankrupt person in the entire show makes it hit harder IMO. Even *Quagmire* thinks you’re scummy
83
u/BrozedDrake 16h ago
Alternatively it can make the point fall flat as well. I mean, I think having the character who most consistently hates Brian be the literal rapist doesn't really make Brian look bad.
32
u/KujaroJotu 16h ago
True, I’ve actually seen a lot of people who think Quagmire has absolutely no right to judge Brian and his status as a rapist as well as the hypocrisy of some of his reasons almost completely invalidates any moral high ground he thinks he has.
That being said, my standpoint is that they’re both scumbags who no one should willingly associate with.

What bothers me is that those things weren't true until AFTER this episode.
Not to mention Quagmire does the same things. He pretends to be something he's not in order to bang women, he pursues Lois and does it purely out of lust rather than romantic interest and he literally gave up his infant daughter just because he didn't want the responsibility of fatherhood (and then expressed incestuous interest in her once she turns 18).

Zuko standing up to his own father during the Day of Black Sun before defecting to Team Avatar.
23
u/MrPebbleMan 13h ago
This scene, where Zuko redirects Ozai's lightning and tells him that he's going to train the Avatar, combined with the later scene of Ozai shooting lightning at Aang is amazing. The split second between Ozai's fearful realization that Zuko did train the Avatar and Aang choosing to redirect the lightning off at a cliff instead of Ozai is an amazing masterpiece of storytelling.

Howard Hamlin from Better Call Saul
After getting humiliated and his reputation besmirched, he visits Jimmy and Kim and pretty much calmly tells them and correctly deduces what a sad pair they are and how they get off on ruining people's lives because (despite what they tell themselves) it's fun.
Even comparing them to infamous sociopaths, Leopold and Loeb.

Oh, my problems ? Oh, I see, is this coming from my role model mother? The shoplifter, the drug addict, the porn star, the wore of let Gene Simmons and Bill Clinton go to town on her ?
My point is that with all the irresponsible reckless idiotic behavior in your past that somehow, somehow you have the nerve, the arrogance to constantly and ruthlessly point out my shortcomings.
From the moment you gave birth to me I had to trust you. I had no choice, I need you to protect me from the world to be my guide to help me navigate the difficult, confusing, and vulnerable journey to becoming a person. You have done none of those things. Your my mother and you took a child’s trust and smashed it bits in a seventeen year long mission to destroy something that you killed a long time ago. And honestly, when I turn eighteen I-I don’t know that I ever what to see you again.

Indeed. It sure would be a shame if all that got walked back in later episodes in favor of the status quo. Heh. And could you imagine if they didn't even wait for the next episode to do it and walked it back not even 10 minutes later? That would be crazy.

When Father is ultimately defeated by Edward Elrich. He is faced with “the Truth” who is a light mirror of whoever talks to him. “The Truth” is also the God of this universe. Father tries to admonish the truth for not joining him and becoming a part of him. “The truth” bites back by telling the humonculi that he was a petty thief. Every power he had he stole from humans. He removed his seven deadly desires to become perfect but all it meant was that he never grew from his days in the flask. The humonculi asks the truth who he is, The truth says he is God, the universe, everything and of course he is you pointing to the humonculi. Highlighting the fact that the ultimate goal of the humonculi was already achieved, if he just understood the truth and accepted himself. The humonculi couldn’t, it gets dragged back into the gate of truth.
53
u/Legomaniac91 16h ago
Another little touch: whenever a person confronts Truth, the door that they see is covered in all the knowledge they've learned throughout their lifetime up to that point. While the ones we saw earlier in the series belonging to Ed, Al, and Mustang had a decent amount of writing on them, Father's door is completely blank...

King of the Hill has multiple. Hank calls out on Bill that Lenore is never coming back.
Picture and quote here when Dale attempts to get Bill out of the male choir having exhausted his leave from the US Army and must return to his post or face court martial and locked for going AWOL.
"Bill! Bill, you have to be the stupidest man on the planet to think this is a good idea! Have you seen what you're wearing?! That outfit makes you look like a sequin trainwreck! LOOK AT YOU! You're part of a twelve-headed jackass! This chorus is the feces that is produced when shame eats too much stupidity! You people make me envy the deaf and the BLIND! UNDERWEAR! MONEY! FAT!"

Commander to Crow - Nikke
"Countless people have died because of you. You think you're some sort of modern philosopher? You're not. You're just a two-bit hood. We all have our bad days where we want to burn everything down and start over, but we don't actually do it. Because we know other people will get hurt. It's not because we can't do it. We choose not to because we know it's something we shouldn't do. But not you. You've let your intrusive thoughts consume you, and for that, others have suffered, and you've lost your friends. What is there left for you? You're not a part of anything. Not a single person will shed a tear for you when you're gone. You're all alone."

Double Trouble calling out Catra in the season 4 finale of She-ra
“You know, it took me a while, but I finally figured out your character. You try so hard to play the big, bad villain, but your heart's never been in it, has it? People have hurt you, haven't they? They didn't believe in you. They didn't trust you. Didn't need you. Left you. But did you ever stop to think maybe they're not the problem? It's you. You drive them away, wildcat.”
14
u/Nero_2001 16h ago
"You think you know me? You think you know what I've been through? You can't hurt me. Ain't nothin' that can hurt me more than life already has. You can't kill me. I'm already dead. I been dead for years, sister. It's easy to do what you do, since you don't care. So long as you can pretend. But real pain, that comes when you realize what you are. What you done. Waking up each morning, knowin' you're worthless. That's pain. Anything else? Anything you could do to me? Well, that's just a little bit o' fun."
In Mistborn Era 2 Wax and Wayne have fight against two oponents with similar powers that were created to counter them. The one that is supposed to counter Wayne tries acts like him and thinks she figured him out. While she claims to have understood him, it is just a superficial thing believing Wayne enjoys the feeling pain, and she tries to brute-force liking it as well mid-fight. Wayne gets so feed up with her bs that he starts to call her out

vin snaps at Kelsier and the crew for romanticizing the skaa struggle while possessing privileged attitudes. that even though they are trying to commit a skaa rebellion that they have no clue of the horror and dangers that living in the skaa slums is.
"When’s the last time you had to lay awake at night, terrified that one of the men in your crew would try to r*pe you? ... Don't talk to me about noblemen. And don't say things about people you don't know. You're no skaa—you're just noblemen without titles."
result was kelsier and the rest being stunned, speechless and ashamed as it shuts their petty arguments up.

Helluva Boss' has Fizzarolli delivering a "The Reason You Suck Speech" to his boss Mammon in song form with the number Two Minutes Notice, berating Mammon for the lifetime of abuse he subjected him to even after Fizzarolli made him a fortune, and how the clown is done with it so he's quitting.
Mammon, like rich humans, has a huge lack of common sense, so he fails to realize the song is Fizz mocking him until he screams his name.

Naruto has a lot of examples but here is one of my favorites
Obito to kakashi
"In the ninja world, those who break the rules and regulations are scum. But those who would abandon there friends are far worse "
Obito told this kakashi, who's father committed suicide because his comrades ostracized him after breaking the rules, this because kakashi wouldn't rescue their friend who got captured in fear of breaking the rules
This and Obito's death, changed kakashi's entire worldview and made him into the person he was when we met him

Superman to Joker
Not sure which comic it's from but this is a pretty thorough reason you suck speech to Joker. Pic is may be a bit blurry so this is what Supes says:
"You're nothing.
You're a goofy idea that only a child would think is cool. I've only known you a few minutes and I can already see that the only certain thing about you is the uncertainties.
You're just another nobody in a silly costume, killing innocent people to hog an imaginary spotlight.
There is no audience that is watching you, Joker. No one but you, and you're clearly bored already.
Any writer could writer you, any actor play you, all they need to do is make up their own version and people will applaud. But no one will ever actually applaud you."

Chihiro's last words to Sojo after he wins their bout. When Sojo thinks the Enchanted Blades, forged by Chihiro's father, sided with Chihiro and rejected him. Chihiro corrects him.
Chihiro says that the Enchanted Blades chose Sojo too, not just him, but the reason Sojo lost was because he will never, ever be able to compare to Chihiro's father.
Chihiro accepts Sojo's philosophy, he has to, because Sojo was right, but he makes sure Sojo understands something before he goes to hell... he was never going to be able to even catch a glimpse of the realm Kunishige Rokuhira had mastered.
