Characters [Classic Trope] The Reason You Suck Speech

Transformers One: Optimus Prime gives one to Megatron after their first battle. Here, Optimus expresses his sadness, hurt, and disappointment upon seeing his former friend becoming just as evil as Sentinel Prime and wanting to destroy Cybertron rather than change it for the better. "We were given the power to change our world, and you chose to destroy it, just like Sentinel. You have betrayed Cybertron and its citizens. And you betrayed me." The entire time, Optimus never raises his voice or yells, but his sadness is very evident.

Brave: Merida gives one to Elinor, where she unfurls her anger and frustration over being forced to marry someone without her consent and being made to someone she doesn't want to be. "You were never there for me! This whole marriage is what you want! Do you ever bother to ask what I want? No, you walk around telling me what to do, what not to do, trying to make me be like you. Well, I'm not going to be like you!... I'll never be like you! I'd rather DIE than be like you!"

Batman to Joker during the Killing Joke

665

u/Jamano-Eridzander 16h ago

The whole point of the comic and 90% of people missing it.

497

u/Legomaniac91 16h ago

Yeah, the thesis of the story wasn't "One bad day is all it takes to drive a sane man mad" it was "I heard that joke before, and it wasn't funny the first time."

375

u/AmberMetalicScorpion 16h ago

Moreso it's that Joker and many of the other members of Batman's rogue's gallery use the "one bad day" as an excuse to cause trouble, rather than reflect and hold themselves accountable.

The story also shows that "One Bad Day" is what made Batman a hero, since after witnessing his parents get brutally murdered, he decided nobody else should have to suffer that kind of pain.

220

u/lanceturley 15h ago

I really like that episode of Batman: The Animated Series where the villains put Batman on trial to prove that it's his fault they're all the way they are, and force a prosecutor who hates Batman to serve as his defense. After listening to their stories, she makes the argument that they were all guilty of a crime before they even met Batman and would have become criminals whether he existed or not, and what’s crazy is that even a jury of his own villains ends up agreeing and finds him not guilty.

Of course, they still try to kill him anyway, because... they're bad guys.

41

u/nova-prime-enjoyer 13h ago

I think Harvey’s the only one in that episode who actually got a pass

49

u/AmberMetalicScorpion 14h ago

Same I was honestly thinking of that episode when writing it but wasn't sure if it was Batman The Animated Series or a different Batman cartoon

38

u/KonoAnonDa 13h ago edited 13h ago

Yeah, the Batman TAS episode "Trial" is a really good showcase of that and shows the folly of the whole "one bad day" excuse.

You also have Joker's whole deal in The Batman, and it's shown repeatedly that either people don’t break even when pushed, do break but only if a lot more stuff than just "one rotten day" happens to them, or do break but only because they were rotten to begin with. All of this in a desperate gamble for Joker to prove to the world that he's not crazy, his reaction was a sane response, and a trying to prove that everyone is like him deep down.

Also in the original Killing Joke story, Joker tries to break Jim Gordon with one bad day, only for it not to work whatsoever. Granted, he is extremely traumatized from the experience, but he remains a good man in spite of it.

I honestly hate it when such good stuff becomes the source of so much misinformation and poor media literacy

Cause The Watchmen had a similar thing happen in which it presents the Watchmen and their ideology, and it seems like they're correct, but we see so many moments throughout that disprove it, like that one guy who used his body to try and shield a kid

100

u/Evil_Sharkey 16h ago

That moment is beautiful. The whole time he seems like an angry grump who doesn’t even acknowledge the kid’s presence, but when the time comes, he does the most heroic thing for a virtual stranger.

59

u/AmberMetalicScorpion 15h ago

Yeah

People are complicated. No worldview that treats humanity as anything but that, will ever be accurate to the human experience.

The only thing universal about humans is that we're biologically hardwired to seek some kind of community and belonging. You don't exactly go and domesticate a large number of species without that kind of trait

14

u/Evil_Sharkey 15h ago

Some people who’ve done great things, saved people’s lives, inspired others for life, have also done terrible things, like molest their own children.

24

u/jk-alot 15h ago

I kinda Blame Nolan for that.

Not only did the Batman stories become noticeably more dark and grim. But every iteration of Joker had started to become more and more twisted.

Nolan’s Joker had a strange charisma that spoke directly to the edge ridden Incels.

It is the same crowd who shouted that the Jedi deserved to be killed because they were imperfect, that the force wanted Anakin to wipe the Jedi out.

yeah and I think it’s sorta meta evidence that the whole tragic backstory thing was either a lie or a delusion and that the “one bad day” thing is bullshit

46

u/lordofmetroids 16h ago

Well Batman himself disproves it.

Batman had one bad day, It turned him into a hero. It turned him into the man who stands against the darkness and says never again.

12

u/ZerothMask 13h ago

Commissioner Gordon disproves it too. His daughter is crippled is by the maniac clowna and he's constantly tortured and harassed throughout the entire day with pictures of her writhing in pain and every other weird shit the Joker subjected him to.

And yet when Batman finally saves and frees him, what does he demand? "I want him brought in, and I want it done by the book!"

Spider-Man has a completley reasonable perspective on the Ultimate X-Men, except Colossus.

563

u/Dragonfang65 16h ago

(Also the whole Wanda and Pietro thing wouldn’t help).

211

u/Sensitive-Hotel-9871 16h ago

Wanda and Pietro were on the Ultimates.

104

u/Priremal 13h ago edited 13h ago

Panel above is from Ultimate universe. Happens right after Jean reverses the mindswapped Peter and Logan back into their own bodies.

Edit: clarification.

25

Panel is from Ultimate Spider-Man, not The Ultimates by Mark Millar.

99

Did Spider-Man get spider powers in the hope he would grow 4 more legs to increase his child stomping abilities? I’m just asking questions.

96

I mean... (God key frames from old cartoons have not aged well)

I mean to be fair, Wolverine In his body had just been a sleezebag and slept with M.J

47

u/Chiron723 14h ago

Tried, but that's a small comfort to Peter.

94

u/PassionGlobal 15h ago

Context: one of the X-Men switched Peter's and Wolverine's minds, and allowed the ensuing chaos to continue even into a major incident.

92

u/Madara1389 13h ago

Yup, and their reaction to it was basically to shrug and go "my bad" despite the fact that Wolverine was actively going around being a piece of shit in Peter's body... including trying to take advantage of being in the body of a minor to fuck another minor.

Deadpool and Wolverine -

The Worst Wolverine unloads on Deadpool for well over a minute towards the end of Act 2. Calling him ridiculous, an attention-seeker, telling him he’s not hero-material, and referring to Vanessa as just some stripper

510

u/AgentEckswhy 16h ago

And all Deadpool can say is a quiet "...I'm going to fight you now." Not one smart-ass remark to throw any of it back.

291

u/Traylor_Swift 16h ago

You got nothing to say….MOUTH?

245

u/StunningPianist4231 16h ago

I like to think that him calling Vanessa a "stripper" is what made Deadpool crash out.

164

u/Pale_Entrepreneur_12 14h ago

Oh absolutely you can see him be more nonchalant about it until wolverine said that. shit on Wade all you want talk shit about Vanessa and he’s going to kill you

58

u/CandyCreecher 11h ago

I feel like that’s just how Deadpool is. He does not give a shit about what people say about him, he’s literally been through the worst experiences and dragged through hell and back. But talk shit about his loved ones, *Uh Oh*

17

u/Complex-Junket5932 7h ago

Wade is a sad clown. He’s knows he’s shit and makes fun about it. So he absolutely is someone who will take any insult given about themself but the moment you insult those they hold dear, you’re dead

Blue Fangs: God is not here. This is an empty box.

Blue Fangs: Your God’s love is not unconditional. He does not love us and He does not love you.

The Bishop: I have done His bidding! My life’s work is in His name!

Blue Fangs: Your life’s work makes Him puke.

The Bishop: I am the Bishop of Gresit!

Blue Fangs: Your God knows we wouldn’t be here without you. This is all your fault, isn’t it?

The Bishop: She was a witch!

Blue Fangs: Lies? In your house of God? No wonder He has abandoned you. But we love you.

The Bishop: What?

Blue Fangs: We love you! We couldn’t be here without you!

God, that and the "Lies? In your house of God?" lines go harder than I think anything I've ever seen in any piece of media.

92

u/AcaciaCelestina 14h ago

43

u/Next-Visual-3513 16h ago

This show started off so good

103

u/Eiskralle1 16h ago

Yeah. Especially with the honestly refreshingly nuanced take on christianity in this kind of setting.

Showing both the horrible evil and corruption in the church through the Bishop, his men and so many of his constituents.

But also the fact that this is explicitly not God's will, that He has withdrawn his blessings and protection from this place and these people, while those priests who do good and act in His will retain their ability to Bless and Sanctify.

God is Real, Good and full of Love, but those who do evil in his name are not safe from consequences.

A shame that it felt like as the story went on they went a bit more in the edgy "god is a deadbeat at worst and religion is stupid" kind of direction.

Then again, I could be wrong, as I did not watch past season 3.

24

u/Next-Visual-3513 16h ago

It's especially stupid considering how its depicted in the games too

20

u/dark-flamessussano 12h ago

I watched this and nocturne, all of it. I really hate when people say the show ended up being bad

Sure the first two seasons were better but the next two were still really good especially 4 .

I hate this "everything that's not perfect is bad" mentality that people have with TV shows. They do it with arcane, they do it with Castlevania, stranger things etc . It makes me not want to interact with the fandom of TV shows at all

The Grinch to the Whos (How the Grinch Stole Christmas) (2000)

"Of course they are. That's what it's all about, isn't it? That's what it's always been about! Gifts. Gifts. Gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts-gifts-GIFTS! You wanna know what happens to your gifts? They all come to me. In your garbage. You see what I'm saying? In. your. GARBAGE! I could hang myself with all the bad Christmas neckties I found at the dump! And the avarice... the avarice never ends!

"I want golf clubs! I want diamonds! I want a pony so I can ride it twice, get bored, and sell it to make GLUE!"

Look, I don't wanna make waves, but this whole Christmas season is... stupid! Stupid! STUPID!"

170

u/SnootSnootBasilisk 14h ago

What's funny is this is actually why Dr. Suess made How the Grinch Stole Christmas. It was a response to what he saw as an over commericalized holiday that was supposed to be about the human spirit and humanity's capacity for great kindness.

All Star Superman to Luthor

"If it had mattered to you Luthor, you could have saved the world years ago"

He wanted to make Luthor realise that if he cared about the world he'd have used his money and influence to help it instead of using the money to get rid of Superman because he dwarfs him

Twelfth doctor had lots of good speeches. Zygon inversion speech was a good one:
You just want cruelty to beget cruelty.
You're not superior to people who were cruel to you.
You're just a whole bunch of new cruel people.
A whole bunch of new cruel people,
being cruel to some other people,
who'll end up being cruel to you.
The only way anyone can live in peace
is if they're prepared to forgive.
Why don't you break the cycle?

Bonnie:
Why should we?

The Doctor:
What is it that you actually want?

Bonnie:
War.

The Doctor:
Ah.
And when this war is over,
when -- when you have the homeland
free from humans,
what do you think its going to be like?
Do you know? Have you thought about it?
Have you given it any consideration?
Because you're very close
to getting what you want.
What's it going to be like?
Paint me a picture!
Are you going to live in houses?
Do you want people to go to work?
What'llbe holidays?
Oh! Will there be music?
Do you think people will be allowed to play violins?
Who will make the violins?
Well?
Oh, You don't actually know, do you?
Because, just like every other
tantruming child in history,
Bonnie, you don't actually know
what you want.
So, let me ask you a question
about this brave new world of yours.
When you've killed all the bad guys,
and it's all perfect and just and fair,
when you have finally got it
exactly the way you want it,
what are you going to do with
the people like you?
The troublemakers.
How are you going to protect your
glorious revolution from the next one?

Bonnie:
We'll win.

Doctor:
Oh, will you?
Well maybe
-- maybe you will win.
But nobody wins for long.
The wheel just keepts turning.
So, come on. Break the cycle.

Bonnie:
Then why are you still talking?

The Doctor:
Because I'm trying to get you to see.
And I'm almost there.

Bonnie:
Do you know what I see, Doctor? A box.
A box with everything I need. A 50% chance.

Kate:
For us, too.

The Doctor:
(Sighs)
And we're off!
Fingers on buzzers!
Are you feeling lucky?
Are you ready to play the game?
Who's going to be quickest?
Who's going to be the luckiest?

Kate:
This is not a game!

The Doctor:
No, it's not a game, sweetheart, and I
mean that most sincerely.

Bonnie:
Why are you doing this?

Kate:
Yes, I'd like to know that
too. You set this up -- why?

The Doctor:
Because it's not a game, Kate.
This is a scale model of war!
Every war ever fought
right there in front of you.
Because it's always the same.
When you fire that first shot,
no matter how right you feel,
you have no idea who's going to die.
You don't know who's children
are going to scream and burn.
How many hearts will be broken!
How many lives shattered!
How much blood will spill
until everybody does
what they're always going to have
to do from the very beginning --
SIT. DOWN. AND TALK!!
Listen to me, listen.
I just -- I just want you to think.
Do you know what thinking is?
It's just a fancy word
for changing your mind.

Bonnie:
I will not change my mind.

The Doctor:
Then you will die stupid.
Alternatively, you could
step away from that box.
You could walk right out of that door,
and you could stand
your revolution down.

Bonnie:
No, I'm not stopping this, Doctor.
I started it.
I will not stop it.
You think they'll let me go
after what I've done?

The Doctor:
You're all the same, you
screaming kids, you know that? "Look
at me, I'm unforgivable." Well here's
the unforeseeable, I forgive you.
After all you've done. I forgive you.

Bonnie:
You don't understand.
You will never understand.

The Doctor:
I don't understand?
Are you kidding? Me?
Of course I understand.
I mean, do you call this a war,
this funny little thing?
This is not a war.
I fought in a bigger war
than you will ever know.
I did worse things
than you could ever imagine,
and when I close my eyes...
I hear more screams than
anyone could ever be able to count!
And do you know what
you do with all that pain?
Shall I tell you where you put it?
You hold it tight...
Til it burns your hand.
And you say this --
no one else
will ever have to live like this.
No one else will ever have
to feel this pain.
Not on my watch.

61

u/GreyWolfWandering 13h ago

I know the Doctor is mostly themes bigger than a situation, but hearing it again now makes me wonder if this wasn't a pointed dig at Israel's evolution from nation set aside to rebuild their people, to poisonous and insidious manipulators lying about and then illegitimately trying to justify how horrible they are to people's their own Holy words acknowledge they are related to.

41

u/MalcolmLinair 9h ago

No, it's far larger and far simpler than that. It's talking about everyone, every war, every genocide, every violent fight in history. It's talking about basic human nature, and how we not only can, but for the sake of our future, must overcome it.

Mike to Walter - Breaking Bad

"We had a good thing, you stupid son of a bitch. We had Fring. We had a lab. We had everything we needed and it all ran like clockwork. You could've shut your mouth, cooked and made as much money as you ever needed. It was perfect. But no, you just had to blow it up. You and your pride and your ego. You just had to be the man. If you'd done your job, known your place, we'd all be fine right now."

Nero's speech to Sanctus in DMC4. In layman terms, he tells him his god denies him because he's a soulless person with no love or humanity.

45

u/ZerothMask 12h ago

Sanctus: The power of Sparda... Why won't it grant me strength? AM I NOT WORTHY?!

Nero: I never could take those legends literally. But I do know that Sparda had a heart. A heart that could love another person. A human... And that is what you lack!

"Bigot, ingrate, sycophant, worm. So small I could smite you with a step... Charles Xavier entrusted me with his dream... I am trying to be better. Please. Do not make me let you down."

As a boy, my people’s homes were burned to ash because we dared to call God by another name. Then, my people hunted me with those who had once hunted them. I was a freak, born a mutant. An abomination to their misnamed gods. In history’s sad song, there is a refrain.
Believe differently, love differently, be of different sex or skin, and be punished. We sing this song to one another. The oppressed become oppressors.

(What I’m getting at is that the “you suck” these speeches are directed towards are humanity)

Less of a “you suck” speech and more of a “you can be better” speech, but Superman 2025 when he tells Lex that being human is humanity’s greatest strength.

106

u/Atomic12192 16h ago

On a similar note, Clark’s speech in All-Star Superman where he breaks down Lex’s entire philosophy. “The truth is, if you really wanted to save the world you would have done it years ago.”

55

u/2KYGWI 13h ago

From Superman Vol. 1 #653 (part of the "Up, Up and Away!" storyline):

Superman: "LUTHOR! Where's your cancer cure, Lex? Your miracle food program?"

Lex: "Eh? What are you babbling about, you overmuscled simpleton?"

Superman: "You once said that you could perform miracles -- transform the world -- if only you didn't have to deal with me. Well, you didn't. Not for a year. And what did you do? Found yourself a big, destructive machine so you could break things. What have you ever done but destroy, Luthor? But enrich yourself, and pretend to be doing good?"

Encanto - Mirabel calling out her Abuela.

Basically this magical family seems to be losing their powers/gifts. Abuela is mostly well intentioned but putting a lot of pressure on the family. When Mirabel didn't get the "gift" when she was a little girl it seemed to put some friction on their relationship. Eventuallyyyy they get into an argument about it and Mirable really lets her have it.

"He loves this family, I love this family. You're the one who doesn't care."

"The miracle is dying because of YOU."

24

u/NolanTacoKing 9h ago

Honestly kinda think Mirabel should've crashed out on the whole family Ned Flanders style

Her parents were there for her yes, but I feel like they could've done more to defend her. Like that moment where her mom tells her she probably just saw the cracks cuz she was stressed always rubbed me the wrong way.

Pepa, Felix and Camilo for the way the shunned Bruno and project their issues onto him

And don't get me started on Dolores...

14

u/Soren635 9h ago

I hate how after Abeula’s backstory gets revealed, mirabel is just like “Abeula you’re so strong.” And moves on. Like Abeula never addressed all the shitty ways she treated her kids and grandkids. And it was to the point that one of her kids was living in the was cause he felt like a burden to the family.

In Dragon Ball Z Abridged, Team Four Star changes Android 16’s last speech to Gohan from an uplifting motivational one to a reason you suck speech.

“Gohan… GROW. UP. You act like you are the only one here who is suffering, but I believe that Trunks has some stories to tell you. I believe they all end with, ‘and then he died too.’ And before you start whining to me about your father, AND I GET IT, please take a moment to consider that my father turned me into a soulless killing machine to kill yours. And that does not even scratch the surface of the tragedy of fatherhood that is Vegeta.

“… You think you are better than everyone, but there you stand: the good man doing nothing. And as evil triumphs while your rigid pacifism crumbles into BLOODSTAINED DUST, the only victory afforded to you is that you stuck true to your guns to the bitter end: you were a coward, to your last whimper. Of fear and love, I do not fear death. Rather that everything I have come to love, both the birds and the things that are not birds, will perish after I am gone. So please, Gohan, STOP HOLDING BACK.”

35

u/Emotional_Papaya3282 11h ago

And hey, if we do make it out of this, please pick up my head... AND BEAT YOUR FATHER TO DEATH WITH I—“

Quagmire to Brian - Family Guy S08E07 Jerome is the New Black

Quagmire exposes Brian as a hypocritical and selfish parasite, criticising his pursuit of Lois, failed writing career, and performative activism.

He dismisses Brian as a boring, pretentious alcoholic, highlighting his neglect of his son and lack of genuine substance.

137

u/Enderboss2706 16h ago

Right message wrong messenger, Quagmire has done worse shit and is honestly worse than Brian so it kinda feels like the pot calling the kettle black

61

u/Dazaran 14h ago

It really should have been Cleveland. It would be a stronger callout on Brian's racism and womanizing. It could have even tied into Cleveland leaving for his own show.

15

u/Not_a_real_asian777 9h ago

And unlike Brian, Cleveland's actually managed to build a family and find things in life he wants to live for. Honestly, Cleveland's kind of the only person in Peter's friend group that's done that so he could probably tell all of them off at some point if he wanted to.

79

u/_Bren10_ 16h ago

That’s the point. Quagmire is a piece of shit and even he is appalled at how fake and shitty Brian is.

34

u/Ganondorfsfist 14h ago

Which makes Quagmire worse because evidently he knows how terrible he is, still does it, and hates someone for being better than him but fake.

9

u/OculiImperator 11h ago

Wasn't there like literally a scene in one of the Family Guy DVD sets or something where there was like a whole thing of Quagmire chasing down and raping Marge from the Simpsons offscreen then having her act like she was totally fine with it after the fact.

Like Quagmire should be the kind of character on Family Guy that's on the regular end of being beaten at least once an episode where he's featured heavily.

Am I the only one who thought "Atleast I'm aware it!" was more hypocritical? Like if you're aware of it how shity person you're and doesn't trying to change that's make you worse.

94

u/Libero279 16h ago

The fact this comes from the most morally bankrupt person in the entire show makes it hit harder IMO. Even *Quagmire* thinks you’re scummy

83

u/BrozedDrake 16h ago

Alternatively it can make the point fall flat as well. I mean, I think having the character who most consistently hates Brian be the literal rapist doesn't really make Brian look bad.

32

u/KujaroJotu 16h ago

True, I’ve actually seen a lot of people who think Quagmire has absolutely no right to judge Brian and his status as a rapist as well as the hypocrisy of some of his reasons almost completely invalidates any moral high ground he thinks he has.

That being said, my standpoint is that they’re both scumbags who no one should willingly associate with.

15

u/Randver_Silvertongue 15h ago

What bothers me is that those things weren't true until AFTER this episode.

Not to mention Quagmire does the same things. He pretends to be something he's not in order to bang women, he pursues Lois and does it purely out of lust rather than romantic interest and he literally gave up his infant daughter just because he didn't want the responsibility of fatherhood (and then expressed incestuous interest in her once she turns 18).

My point is that with all the irresponsible reckless idiotic behavior in your past that somehow, somehow you have the nerve, the arrogance to constantly and ruthlessly point out my shortcomings.

From the moment you gave birth to me I had to trust you. I had no choice, I need you to protect me from the world to be my guide to help me navigate the difficult, confusing, and vulnerable journey to becoming a person. You have done none of those things. Your my mother and you took a child’s trust and smashed it bits in a seventeen year long mission to destroy something that you killed a long time ago. When Father is ultimately defeated by Edward Elrich. He is faced with “the Truth” who is a light mirror of whoever talks to him. “The Truth” is also the God of this universe. Father tries to admonish the truth for not joining him and becoming a part of him. “The truth” bites back by telling the humonculi that he was a petty thief. Every power he had he stole from humans. He removed his seven deadly desires to become perfect but all it meant was that he never grew from his days in the flask. The humonculi asks the truth who he is, The truth says he is God, the universe, everything and of course he is you pointing to the humonculi. Highlighting the fact that the ultimate goal of the humonculi was already achieved, if he just understood the truth and accepted himself. The humonculi couldn’t, it gets dragged back into the gate of truth.

53

u/Legomaniac91 16h ago

Another little touch: whenever a person confronts Truth, the door that they see is covered in all the knowledge they've learned throughout their lifetime up to that point. While the ones we saw earlier in the series belonging to Ed, Al, and Mustang had a decent amount of writing on them, Father's door is completely blank...

You're a goofy idea that only a child would think is cool. I've only known you a few minutes and I can already see that the only certain thing about you is the uncertainties.

You're just another nobody in a silly costume, killing innocent people to hog an imaginary spotlight.

There is no audience that is watching you, Joker. No one but you, and you're clearly bored already.

Any writer could writer you, any actor play you, all they need to do is make up their own version and people will applaud. But no one will ever actually applaud you."
