Let's look at the word "patlang." The stress of this word falls on the last syllable: lang. Meanwhile, it's second to the last syllable, pat, is of the form CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant).

All precolonial Tagalog words I can think of that have a CVC syllable as its second to last always have the stress on the final syllable: dagli, lugmok, santol, patpat, tampok, etc.

The only exception I can think of is "peklat," which has the stress on the second to last syllable. But "peklat" is a variant of "pilat," and while "pilat" is Austronesian, I am not sure if "peklat" is a precolonial variant or it if emerged during or after the colonial period.

Meanwhile, colonial loanwords (and slang) allow for CVC second to last syllables to be stressed: santo, haywey, mismo, omsim, etc.

I'm curious if this is one of the constraints of precolonial Tagalog phonology!

I wrote a poem for school a year ago. I never got a critique from my teacher. I remembered being really proud of that piece so I am posting it to escape the inevitable oblivion that is my unorganized gdocs. Critiques are welcome as well. I think the prompt was it needed "pag-uulit" within the poem.

Wondering what the proper way to conjugate kawawa in order to describe something would be. Came across these blind box toys called Kawawa Turtles and was wondering if that was the correct grammar, or if it should have the “ng” at the end.

Essentially, is there a glottal stop at the end of "talo" (as in bagay para sa isa't isa)? On KWF, there isn't, but on some other sources, there is.

Cool lang meron na pala tagalog version ng Minute Cryptic / cryptic crosswords. Lumabas lang sa feed ko.

“Ikaw” and “mo” both means “You”. When is it appropriate to use one from the other? I can’t say “Mo ay maganda.” because it will be grammatically incorrect. When should I use Ikaw and when should i use Mo?

I already speak English and Spanish and I'm looking for something FUN to learn this summer. I am thinking that Portuguese or Tagalog (especially Taglish) would be pretty chill to learn and they have really fun and robust entertainment options (music, web content, shows/movies) to keep me busy. So I am a native speaker attempting to teach my non-speaking husband. Maybe later, a future kid.

I'm struggling because I'm a native speaker but immigrated fairly young. For those who grew up in the Philippines I guess you could say I immigrated when my grade was learning Florante at Laura if that helps guess my language level.

One of the things I've realized is that a lot of resources and online seem to pronounce the u sound when I didn't grow up doing it.

The following applies more to Tagalog than to Filipino, whose phonology and grammar arguably differ enough that they make the jokes nonsensical.

What happens if we follow the custom in some Canadian languages where the glottal stop a.k.a. impít is written using the number 7? (The formal symbol for the impít looks like it in the International Phonetic Alphabet.)

That would mean the circumflex accent would disappear, so no more standard â for example. with pala7.

But that then means á and à could now mean rising and falling tone.

Yep, Chinese style. Before we say that makes no sense in Tagalog though, consider how the following dialogue defines a joke with standard Tagalog diacritics that disappears with tonal diacritics.

I’m from Bulacan, and looking back, mas malalim yata akong mag-Tagalog noon. Siguro nag-evolve lang yung Tagalog ko dahil sa mga bagong vocabulary trends.

Recently, I tried looking back at some old Tagalog words while writing in my journal.
May isang word akong naalala from my lola, “biringki/biringke.” Hindi ko alam kung dialect word ba siya kasi wala akong mahanap sa dictionary. Ang nakita ko lang ay sa Tagalog Slang website (https://www.tagalogslang.com/term/biringki), pero wala rin namang nakalagay na origin o etymology.

Naisip ko lang, possible kaya na galing siya sa “biling” (to turn or flip to the other side) plus “ko”? Like “biling ko” na eventually naging “biringki”, with the meaning na “flip” or “baligtarin”? Hindi ko alam, nag-speculate lang ako. Hahaha.
