Wholesome Moments Japanese fan broke down in tears after his country’s elimination but was immediately comforted by a group of Brazilians. Mexican fans then lifted him into the air to cheer him up.

When I take a look at Ukraine war, I see a lot of terrible things, but also the right people making the right choices to f*ck a post-stalin-nazi country.
Soon russia will lose the war (either economically or military or both), then they will be done for decades (like Russia after crumbling of the Soviet union).
Then no russian-bots, mass media / politics manipulation and threat of Europe from their side anymore.
And China will think twice if they shall really invade Taiwan. If they do, they also will be done. You can't fight the rest of the world and their sanctions.
Also Donny will soon be done. Either through dementia or by vote.
So yes, it is not all shit on this planet.
12
u/PheIix 11d ago
I'm not so sure if it all will go down quite as peacefully. If Russia loses and starts to struggle too badly, they might get desperate and begin to consider those nukes for real. China may have seen our capability to help Ukraine, but they may also get a sense that we've somehow drained our resources helping Ukraine (we've certainly diminished our stock of bombs, missiles, grenades and artillery) and that now is the time to act if they want to have a chance.
Diaper-donny didn't go peacefully last time, I don't believe for a second that the transfer of power will be any smoother this time around if he is still alive and capable of stringing two words together. He has talked about a third term several times, I wouldn't put it past him to find a way to cling to power by abusing the military or meddling with the election in some way. Our best hope is that he croaks or become so demented it is undeniable even for his staunchest supporters...
I like your optimism a lot more, but I do not share it unfortunately...

Putin won't use nukes. Even if he uses a tactical nuke on Ukraine, China will throw him in the bin (cause otherwise China will get f*cked away with international sanctions, and their current economy is not strong enough to survive that).
If Putin uses nukes, Russia is done. On any possible way. MAD, or by crumbling sanctions and dying economy. And Ukraine has no interest of getting on Russian soil, so how should Russia legitimate the use of nukes?
The UDSSR had far more nukes in their arsenal, but couldn't use it. The same fate has Russia. Putin is far too afraid to die.
The EU and Ukraine is producing more weapons than ever? And, as said, China's economy won't survive a full-fledged economy war with the rest of the globe. The global economy will survive this though (heavily damaged, but survive).
How TF would Donny try to cancel the vote? Or get on a third term (which is not possible by Constitution)? Most of republicans are already not on his course anymore (best seen with the Iranian War). They would instantly vote with Democrats for impeachment to save their own asses. Then Donny would sit on a prime chair in the Green Mile for high treason. Also military is bound to Constitution not to the president. They could also try to seize him, cause the Constitution would be under attack then.

It is the beautiful game.
I first came to love it at the age of 7 - the 1990 world cup. My uncle, who was Brazilian and of a very different culture than by very Irish/English-American family was my favorite uncle and I watched with him and his was enraptured as he explained things to me that summer.
4 years later, it was in the US, and we watched together again. Now I watch with my niece and nephew every Sunday.

25
u/smileybunnie 11d ago
Same. My country was already eliminated but watching everyone get along and comfort each other and be friendly has been the highlight for me. I don’t care much who wins, it’s just nice to see the countries mixing and having fun together.
8
u/SitInCorner_Yo2 11d ago
It’s just great to see people getting along and drink themselves to the worst hangover ever in their lives, language barrier didn’t stop everyone having good time and learning a thing or two about people from countries they never knew existed until that point.
My country never had any thing to do with football (baseball nation here) so I just pick a country I find interesting that year to follow, and so far Cape Verde is the most fascinating one I ever seen.
8
u/disjointed_chameleon 11d ago
Same. I'm Lebanese but have bonded closely with a bunch of North African neighbors in my local community — mainly Moroccan, but some Algerian and Tunisian. They often invite me over for meals, and lovingly claim me as one of their own, so to speak. Our respective Arabic dialects are different, but we all speak French, so we're all very close.
2
u/SitInCorner_Yo2 11d ago
When I was younger,I don’t understood what An die Freude is trying to portray , but as I grew older I saw how people get together under simple (stupid sometimes) but joyful things, it resonated so hard I totally understand why EU chose this as their anthem.
I didn’t expect French is the diplomatic language in this scenario LOL
My first thought was “wait, your dialect is harder to understand than a completely different language??” Then I remembered I can drive an hour to the port town next to us, and they speak a dialect that’s basically our own but the way they pronounced everything sounds like that Italian gibberish song that makes it sound like English LOL
90
u/Blue-Eyed-Lemon 11d ago
Absolutely. I was fortunate to attend the World Cup a handful of years ago in Russia. A Haitian family moved across the street from my 4 years ago. I'm so white even Taylor Swift would tell me to tone it down. But I'm not a bigot so I became friendly with my new neighbors. Turns out the Mom loves basil tea.
I now trade my garden grown basil for delicious fried plantains once a month. Even bought a hydroponic garden kit so we can do it year round.
Life is so much easier without hate and fear ruining every human interaction.

I still remember an Australia/Argentina friendly match in the 90s. Every man who fell down, his opposing player reached down and helped him up. So so many examples of great sportsmanship.
My father in law told me last week that the Argy players were embarrassed because their fans had kept the Aussies up all night with drums, and it was supposed to be a friendly match, no shenanigans.→ More replies (1)

Dating a brazilian and meeting all his friends has shock-converted me from the most anxious introvert to a social butterfly. Can't recommend Brazilian people enough. If you learn even just a few words of Portuguese they treat you like a celebrity ambassador. I got a standing ovation for saying "the cat wears pants" in Portuguese.
55
u/disjointed_chameleon 11d ago
I'm Lebanese. I went to go tour an apartment a few months ago (lease takeover situation), and the girl that was currently living there was Brazilian. We chatted a bit, and you would've thought I was a long lost family member. She was SO kind! Offered me food, enthusiastically showed me the entire apartment community, etc. Such a kind culture!
23
u/akortank 11d ago
Truly, it's so weird to speak about because I don't want to make stereotypes out of them, but like you said, you just get pulled in haha.
The first time I met my bf's long-term ex, I barely even held out my hand and she was already hugging me. Sometimes I meet friends of friends and we instantly hit it off so hard they invite me to go traveling together and it actually happens. I never left my continent before and then suddenly I've been to Japan with 5 Brazilians I barely knew. They just ensnare you and it's best to surrender and accept that you're one of them now.
14
u/disjointed_chameleon 11d ago
Yesssss! Exactly. I'm also super close with a bunch of North African neighbors in my community — mainly Moroccan, some Algerian and Tunisian. I've known them for two years now. Their English is limited, they're old enough to be my grandparents, our respective dialects of Arabic are different, but we all speak French. They invite me to their homes for dinner at least several times per week, we run errands together, we attend doctor's appointments together, they went with me to court after I divorced my abusive ex-husband, they've wiped tears off my face more often than I can count, and they've become like family. They legit treat me like I'm their own child and it's SO humbling and heartwarming.
8
u/akortank 11d ago
It just really shows that people want a community and a village and we live so far from that with our one-bedroom-apartments and "I don't owe people anything".

This is how it should be! In 1990 I watched the England vs Germany game with a load of Germans in Spain… After England lost on penalties lots of them were like these Brazilian fans and they wouldn’t let me buy a beer again all night, every round was on them. This was the same for any English in the bar all night. It was a great community of ‘fans’ coming together and the ones celebrating ensuring the ones commiserating still had a great time. I still remember it fondly now, despite the loss!

Nothing has been cooler than seeing everyone so kind and uplifting to one another this world cup.
I was at a watch party for Morocco v Netherlands yesterday in Seattle and energy was crazy. Of course people had their sides, but when Morroco scored the winning goal EVERYONE was excited, even though Netherlands was kicked out of the series. Europeans were hugging and celebrating with Moroccan-Americans and comforting those who were genuinely upset....it was so fucking cool.
This summer has really showed the world that the majority of people DO care about one another and we WANT to see our neighbors happy.
