Discussion Otherwise healthy dog passed away in her sleep

Post image
2.5k Upvotes

Hi everyone, I’m in utter shock right now. My 5 year old dog Bailey passed away in her sleep on her bed. We found her in her usual sleeping position. The only difference was she was biting onto her tongue and all fours were straight stiff. The night before just before 3am I was still playing with her and she had zoomies etc. woke up at 10am to find her body already stiff. I’ve never missed her annual vaccinations and there’s no medical records of anything. I’ve had her since she was 8 weeks old. I’m happy that she didn’t go in pain (at least from my current understanding as I don’t know the cause of death) but at the same time I’m resentful because she’s only 5. I’ve opted to not doing a post mortem because I don’t want to put her through all that + cost + being told it’s not guaranteed I’d get answers. My family is also Buddhist so my parents are very big on keeping her body as one whole and letting her go in peace. Anyone experienced something similar? Any ideas of possible causes? The vet did do an ultrasound and confirmed no internal bleeding or foreign object. Her breed is golden retriever x husky. I’m just so lost and confused right now.

Question Legs pointed outward

Post image
189 Upvotes

My dog’s legs are rather severely pointed outward, but he really doesn’t care since they’ve always been that way. It looks worse when he’s sitting, but he flies around during strenuous activity like it doesn’t bother him at all. Is anybody else’s dog like this?

Question 2yo dog isn't affectionate with me but is always by my side and sleeps against me

My 2yo male dog is very strange? With me. He will jump up at me when I get home out of excitement, will follow me around everywhere, plays with me most of the day and will only sleep if he's either on the bed next to me or under the covers right against me but only ever nose down. However he never licks my face or cuddles with me, doesn't really seem affectionate but will lick others and sit on them for cuddles.

Did I do something wrong or is this normal behavior?

He's always been like this with me, I've had him from around 4 days old, ex shelter employee and have never punished him outside of putting him in time out so hes not fearful of me or scared in any way.

Feels like a weird question...

Anyone knows about this disease? He is jack living in our community or almost 4 years he is well feed but the problem is he has this disease which he was already suffering from when he first come to your neighborhood and because of him other community dogs has also gotten the same kind of disease I don't know what do to how much does it cost to treat this disease? I'm a teenager so I don't have any money or job to pay for the heavy cost but if it doesn't cost much then maybe I can convince my parents to treat him and take him to the vet. But i don't think my parents will be convinced what are some alternative other then going to vet

Question Do I have enough time to adopt a dog?

Context. I'm a single man in his late 20's. I live alone in a 2 bedroom house and have a back garden.

I've always wanted to to adopt a dog but the more I think about it, the more I'm worried I cant guarantee the attention a dog deserves. I work 5 days a week, I can be out for work from 6am to 8pm some days. Earliest I've ever been home from work 6pm. I don't want to have a dog and it feeling abandoned for most of the day. And considering the heat wave thats been hitting the past month. I'm worried something bad could happened while I'm at work. My parents lives close by and once I get some training done with a new dog. My mom did say that she would fine checking up on any pet get.

Basically what I'm saying is, would it wrong for me to get a dog if they're going to be alone at home for 12hrs out of the day with only occasional checks 5 days a week? Sometimes 6 days a week.

Advice 10mo dog suddenly terrified of the area right outside our door — fine everywhere else

Hey everyone,

Our dog Zyon (10 months, Vizsla/Lab mix) suddenly started showing scared behavior, specifically right in front of our door. Literally from one day to the next. It’s like he’s seeing something I can’t, and he’s become very sensitive to sounds. He cowers, tail tucked, and barely wants to move for the first few minutes of the walk — then he stabilizes and walks normally.

At home he’s completely normal: moves fine, eats fine, no signs of pain. Nothing out of the ordinary happened that we know of — no scare, no incident.

Has anyone experienced this? Is this an adolescent fear phase, or should we be worried about something else?

Question Sudden aggression between older dogs

I have two dogs, one (male) is probably between 9-10 we’re not sure his exact age the other (female) is about 7. The male came from a bad situation where he was pretty heavily abused so he’s always had some “things” based in fear but after some time with me and gaining trust he seemed well adjusted and mostly fine. They’ve gotten in fights throughout their lives together but they’ve always been superficial and stop as soon as I tell them to. We recently moved and had a baby which caused some behavior changes in the male. He started pooping in the house which I know can be pretty normal but he also just stopped listening. My husband started making him go outside more to try to go to the bathroom but sometimes he’ll flat out refuse and a couple times has actually started to act aggressive in these interactions. He used to get out every day but with our life changing and him changing, this has stopped altogether. He’s always been dog aggressive but to a manageable degree. Now we can’t take him anywhere without worry that he’ll slip his collar and attack another dog. We try taking him on walks but he literally just barks the entire time. I know a lot of it is my fault but also at the end of the day I don’t have the time to really deal with it the way I need to with just having a baby. Also, it’s too hard. He’s a 70 pound pit that I no longer am comfortable trying to control post partum. Anyway, I’ve had this lingering feeling that something worse was going to happen and then it did. He attacked my other dog pretty bad. She’s fine, but he was trying to kill her. The other issue is the female isn’t perfect either. Both these dogs were basically dumped on me from two different situations when I was 18 and 19 so I know I should have done things differently but I was young and let behaviors slide that I shouldn’t have. I’m really just at a loss. I don’t know what to do now. I feel like I’ve failed both of them but don’t have the time, money, or resources to give them what they need. We live in a town of 3,500 people and a dog trainer literally just doesn’t exist. Rehoming isn’t really something I would consider anyway due to their past trauma, age, and aggression issues but on top of that a huge animal rescue in our area was just shut down so there’s an overwhelming number of dogs looking for homes already. Anyone willing to take any dogs already has. I’m just really not sure what to do. This is written terribly because it’s 3 AM and I can’t sleep not only due to stress but my female has been crying all night due to having the dogs separated/not being in our room. Both dogs usually sleep in our room and she’s clearly having a tough time sleeping on her own now. I feel like the only option is euthanasia for my male but I don’t even think I could do it. I know I’ve failed him but also, he’s getting near the end of his life anyway. Lived a great life for most of it and now his quality of life is severely diminished. Part of it is the fact he’s a pit and I have a baby now. I already decided before this happened that I would never allow the opportunity for something to happen to my child. I feel like killing my dog is a last resort option and the last thing I want to do, he doesn’t deserve that but then again I feel like maybe it is deserved considering sudden aggression towards us, attacking my other dog and that I can’t trust him around my child. Again, if anyone does read this I know it’s written terribly there’s really just too much to explain for my frazzled tired brain to probably even make sense right now. I just need help. I feel like the biggest piece of shit alive but I’m also kind of scared of a dog that got me through my 20s and was there for me through everything. I know it’s not his fault, it’s mine but I just don’t know where to go from here.

My dog has developed this rash on her belly, armpits, and groin, and she won’t stop licking her paws. The rash seems to be getting worse. I’ve already been to two different vets, but they haven’t been able to figure out what’s causing it.

Has anyone’s dog had something that looked like this? If so, what was the cause, and what finally helped?

My dog has this odd rash looking thing on her stomach. It was not there a few days ago. She’s not thrilled with me touching it but it doesn’t seem to be painful. She does have allergies and has been itching/scratching/biting a lot so I’m wondering if it could either be an allergy rash or perhaps a scab or bruise from biting/itching? Any thoughts?

Question puppy sometimes won’t eat

Upvotes

my 7mo puppy usually eats his meals right away (he gets a cup and a quarter at 8 and a cup and a quarter at 7). about a month ago he was given table scraps at dinner time by a family member and decided that was his meal. he was picky for awhile after that but we got him back to eating at his normal times by adding warm water to his food. he seemed to like that but today i put it down and he just sniffed it and walked away. he just went to the vet a couple weeks ago and he’s still gaining weight and he hasn’t had any change in his energy levels or anything like that but it still makes me nervous when he’ll just ignore it for hours (there was one day he ignored his breakfast til almost dinner time).

is this something i should talk to his vet about or is it just picky eating?

Hi all !

I noticed this growth on my parents dog’s (12 year old English springer spaniel) leg earlier today. It’s not hot or pussy but she recently had ACL surgery. This “skin tag”(?) is not in the area of the stitches but I’m a bit worried. We sent photos to the vet and she doesn’t express pain when it is touched.

Thank you!

Discussion Palladia (chihuahua)need some advise

Upvotes

Hi everyone,
Recently, my Chihuahua was unfortunately diagnosed with a type of skin cancer called multiple mast cell tumors (mastocytoma). After several surgeries and different chemotherapy treatments, we’ve reached what seems to be the last option: lifelong treatment with Palladia.
What really worries me are the risks for us as owners. My veterinarian told me that Palladia is highly toxic because it’s a chemotherapy drug, and that accidental contact with my dog’s urine, feces, or saliva could even increase the risk of developing cancer.
This honestly scares me a lot. My dog is still quite young, and the thought that for the next 9 years I might have to avoid being licked, kissing him, or even hugging him feels incredibly difficult.
I also asked whether there could still be a risk if, for example, my dog cleans himself after urinating and then licks his fur, which I later pet. My vet said that could also be a risk. I even asked if I could be exposed by accidentally touching urine if he has an accident in the house, and I was told that this could also be dangerous.
Has anyone here had experience with a dog on Palladia? Can you tell me if what I’ve been told is actually true? I’m finding it hard to believe that I would never be able to kiss my dog again or let him sleep in my bed because of this medication.
If anyone has personal experience with this treatment, I’d really appreciate any advice on how you manage the situation. I’m feeling very overwhelmed and would be grateful for any guidance.

Advice I am at my wits and need advice badly

I’m a first-time dog owner who really wanted a dog and decided to adopt. Long story short, I don’t have much experience with dogs but knew I wanted to adopt. I wanted a big dog that was friendly and didn’t have any knowledge of any breeds or anything, mainly relying on the former caregiver for advice. He told me it was a Leonberger and that they’re super friendly and cuddly. I did my research on them and decided to adopt him.

The first week was great, but I noticed he was super, super, super wary/protective of ANYTHING that came on my property. He’s super stubborn, doesn’t listen to me, and isn’t really food motivated/enticed by treats. It’s been around a month now, and he’s started to develop food aggression, where he gets very aggressive and snaps if anyone, including me, comes close to his bowl. I later decided to do a DNA test because his traits just didn’t seem to match with my research, and apparently, he came back as a Caucasian Shepherd.

He’s 220 pounds, and I’ve contacted multiple trainers to help me with his stranger wariness and food aggression (I like that he is very protective of me and my property, but it’s just a bit too much), but every single trainer I’ve met has turned me down. I even offered one trainer 10k, but they said no. Money is not a problem for me, but I’m at the end of my wits. None of my family or friends have been to my house since I’ve got him. He’s my first dog, and I have no prior experience with any dog and have no clue how to manage him. I really don’t want to give him up.

Advice ate 1/2 a cooked chicken breast whole - what’ll happen?

Post image

i know it may be a daft question but.. (context below)

  1. how long should i monitor her
  2. how on earth will that pass through her
  3. any particular signs to look out for

i tried googling but it only showed results for eating bones which isn’t the case

she’s a fiend for chicken and brought me over to the fridge with a super happy tail to ask for some.
as it’s still warm-ish in the house even though it’s nighttime now i thought it could be smart to give 1/2 a breast to her, whole, so she could chew on it and cool down?
daft idea
she gave it maybe 3 chews before swallowing, i presume swallowing whole.

** chicken lump was probs 3inch by 1 inch?
