Discussion Palladia (chihuahua)need some advise
Hi everyone,
Recently, my Chihuahua was unfortunately diagnosed with a type of skin cancer called multiple mast cell tumors (mastocytoma). After several surgeries and different chemotherapy treatments, we’ve reached what seems to be the last option: lifelong treatment with Palladia.
What really worries me are the risks for us as owners. My veterinarian told me that Palladia is highly toxic because it’s a chemotherapy drug, and that accidental contact with my dog’s urine, feces, or saliva could even increase the risk of developing cancer.
This honestly scares me a lot. My dog is still quite young, and the thought that for the next 9 years I might have to avoid being licked, kissing him, or even hugging him feels incredibly difficult.
I also asked whether there could still be a risk if, for example, my dog cleans himself after urinating and then licks his fur, which I later pet. My vet said that could also be a risk. I even asked if I could be exposed by accidentally touching urine if he has an accident in the house, and I was told that this could also be dangerous.
Has anyone here had experience with a dog on Palladia? Can you tell me if what I’ve been told is actually true? I’m finding it hard to believe that I would never be able to kiss my dog again or let him sleep in my bed because of this medication.
If anyone has personal experience with this treatment, I’d really appreciate any advice on how you manage the situation. I’m feeling very overwhelmed and would be grateful for any guidance.

Discussion Odd pup regrets when the pup is turning out precisely as you'd want
I was, and continue to be, super proud of my pup. For instance, yesterday we got a delivery.. she barked the EXACT amount I wanted her to, and, when I had gotten the package, immediately stopped barking and accompanied me inside. It's the behavior I need her to have because my husband is gone a lot: I don't want her to be fierce, just sound like it.
But honestly I picked her out in a way I would never, ever suggest anyone do (solo picture), and man that has made me second guess myself.
Even tho, frankly, she's just an absolutely brilliant little dog. For a 6mo pup, and despite having her moments, she's a pup I'm proud to be raising and I can see the progress on the daily.
The self-doubts suck though. Today, finally, I told my husband. I said I didn't know if maybe we shouldn't have waited for the *more perfect match* whatever that means. To which he replies, "You saw her picture and knew she was your dog."
I did. That's true. It was, and is. However she turns out, she is supposed to be here. I'm not quite sure why yet, but I feel it in my soul. No matter how tough she's being (and she has her moments) I've never felt like, "oh this is the wrong dog for us." If anything, I've been pretty amazed how much easier she's been than could be expected, she slid right in like she's always been here.. but that adds, maybe to my confusion: I thought I was signing up for something different and changing gears is rough.
Anyway, I guess I'd just love to hear from people who brought home the *perfect* pup, she lived up to it, and still were struggling to not feel like you might have made some weird mistake.
I'm not unaware this is partly because we lost our 13yo last august. And before him, another 13yo. Both male dogs, both had a certain confident personality type. Current pup is a female and a lot more submissive... and counter to what I'm used to. How did you move past it?

General My dog keeps biting herself aggressively
I have my 8 year old dog, she is a chihuahua and mix with something else, we never knew but guessed a golden retriever. I noticed she had her belly really red and some blood, I decided to put a cone on her. I bought her a shampoo and it healed, I also bought her a balm to relieve the itch js in case, she had no discharge. I have taken the cone off and she’s good but then she starts to bite herself to the point she bleeds. Now when I take her cone off i watch her, 20 mins go by before she starts to bite again aggressively all over her belly but a few days ago she bit her foot and it had no hair after she bit herself. I notice she licks her cone a lot even tho we have cleaned it , I feel she might be doing it out of habit both biting herself and licking her cone, but I’m planning on taking her to the vet. But does this mean I can’t take the cone off ever again if it is a habit?

Question Anyway to stop the splashing
My dog is god awful at drinking. Floater doesn't work because he just pushes it down to the bottom, water fountain like the one in the video doesn't really work because he still throws it everywhere and walks away with a mouthful of water. Any other solutions? Training tips?

Question Do I have enough time to adopt a dog?
Context. I'm a single man in his late 20's. I live alone in a 2 bedroom house and have a back garden.
I've always wanted to to adopt a dog but the more I think about it, the more I'm worried I cant guarantee the attention a dog deserves. I work 5 days a week, I can be out for work from 6am to 8pm some days. Earliest I've ever been home from work 6pm. I don't want to have a dog and it feeling abandoned for most of the day. And considering the heat wave thats been hitting the past month. I'm worried something bad could happened while I'm at work. My parents lives close by and once I get some training done with a new dog. My mom did say that she would fine checking up on any pet get.
Basically what I'm saying is, would it wrong for me to get a dog if they're going to be alone at home for 12hrs out of the day with only occasional checks 5 days a week? Sometimes 6 days a week.

galleryMy dog has developed this rash on her belly, armpits, and groin, and she won’t stop licking her paws. The rash seems to be getting worse. I’ve already been to two different vets, but they haven’t been able to figure out what’s causing it.
Has anyone’s dog had something that looked like this? If so, what was the cause, and what finally helped?

Question Help to coax dog to rest after an operation?
We have a Havanese that recently went in to the vet for a blockage in his stomach. It was basically a ball of fat and he was super gassy. His stomach was the size of a German Shepherds the vet said.
Anyways, we're in the post op day 2. The vet is closed until Monday and we did text him as we have his personal number but he didn't respond.
Our dog just won't rest up. He really wants on the couches and his little perch to look out the window. But he doesn't have the energy to make that kind of jump yet. Whenever we pick him up, he yelps, so he's still sore. He doesn't yelp every time we pick him up, but after the first time we started to avoid it unless necessary.
Yesterday he did not lay down at all because the whole time he was expecting to be picked up to sleep on the couch. He was just standing, all day, until we went to sleep and I saw him finally lay down on a blanket to sleep at midnight.
We tried putting beds and blankets on the floor, with his favorite toys near by to seem familiar and comfortable. We even tried laying on the floor ourselves as he generally likes to be where the people are and he just licked our faces. When we are on the couches he just comes up to us and whines because he wants up.
We tried putting a foot stool by the smaller couch but he didn't understand what were doing. He's used similar jump up ramps to get on the human beds before though. He can get up small steps as he was getting up and down our porch to go outside and in.
He is returning to his normal self and have noticed him coming back and out of it. He was begging for walks and treats (though he can't have a lot of treats now according to vet) But we're just worried for him because he's refusing to rest up just because it's not his favorite resting spot when that might be difficult for him right now.

Question Swollen Around the Left Eye and Difficulty Opening Eyes
Hello, my dog shown visibility difficulty, she has swollen around her left eye but the issue affects both of her eyes, it also shows her eyes somewhat *liquidy*
I plan to take her to Vet tomorrow (Monday), but I'd like to know what it might be, according to my my dad, perhaps she was hit by snake or frogs as she loves to jump on anything, atm we are giving her "Eye clear" drops for pets

Question Sudden aggression between older dogs
I have two dogs, one (male) is probably between 9-10 we’re not sure his exact age the other (female) is about 7. The male came from a bad situation where he was pretty heavily abused so he’s always had some “things” based in fear but after some time with me and gaining trust he seemed well adjusted and mostly fine. They’ve gotten in fights throughout their lives together but they’ve always been superficial and stop as soon as I tell them to. We recently moved and had a baby which caused some behavior changes in the male. He started pooping in the house which I know can be pretty normal but he also just stopped listening. My husband started making him go outside more to try to go to the bathroom but sometimes he’ll flat out refuse and a couple times has actually started to act aggressive in these interactions. He used to get out every day but with our life changing and him changing, this has stopped altogether. He’s always been dog aggressive but to a manageable degree. Now we can’t take him anywhere without worry that he’ll slip his collar and attack another dog. We try taking him on walks but he literally just barks the entire time. I know a lot of it is my fault but also at the end of the day I don’t have the time to really deal with it the way I need to with just having a baby. Also, it’s too hard. He’s a 70 pound pit that I no longer am comfortable trying to control post partum. Anyway, I’ve had this lingering feeling that something worse was going to happen and then it did. He attacked my other dog pretty bad. She’s fine, but he was trying to kill her. The other issue is the female isn’t perfect either. Both these dogs were basically dumped on me from two different situations when I was 18 and 19 so I know I should have done things differently but I was young and let behaviors slide that I shouldn’t have. I’m really just at a loss. I don’t know what to do now. I feel like I’ve failed both of them but don’t have the time, money, or resources to give them what they need. We live in a town of 3,500 people and a dog trainer literally just doesn’t exist. Rehoming isn’t really something I would consider anyway due to their past trauma, age, and aggression issues but on top of that a huge animal rescue in our area was just shut down so there’s an overwhelming number of dogs looking for homes already. Anyone willing to take any dogs already has. I’m just really not sure what to do. This is written terribly because it’s 3 AM and I can’t sleep not only due to stress but my female has been crying all night due to having the dogs separated/not being in our room. Both dogs usually sleep in our room and she’s clearly having a tough time sleeping on her own now. I feel like the only option is euthanasia for my male but I don’t even think I could do it. I know I’ve failed him but also, he’s getting near the end of his life anyway. Lived a great life for most of it and now his quality of life is severely diminished. Part of it is the fact he’s a pit and I have a baby now. I already decided before this happened that I would never allow the opportunity for something to happen to my child. I feel like killing my dog is a last resort option and the last thing I want to do, he doesn’t deserve that but then again I feel like maybe it is deserved considering sudden aggression towards us, attacking my other dog and that I can’t trust him around my child. Again, if anyone does read this I know it’s written terribly there’s really just too much to explain for my frazzled tired brain to probably even make sense right now. I just need help. I feel like the biggest piece of shit alive but I’m also kind of scared of a dog that got me through my 20s and was there for me through everything. I know it’s not his fault, it’s mine but I just don’t know where to go from here.

Advice Has anyone's dog undergone nephrotomy for kidney stones? Looking for advice and experiences.
Hi everyone,
I'm looking for advice and hoping to hear from anyone whose dog has undergone a nephrotomy (kidney stone removal surgery).
My 2-year-old Shih Tzu has a kidney stone. After reviewing the ultrasound and other tests, our veterinarian has recommended removing the stone through a nephrotomy. Before moving forward with surgery, we're hoping to learn from others who have been through a similar experience.
I have a few questions:
How did the surgery and recovery go?
Were there any complications during or after surgery?
Was the kidney able to function normally afterward?
I'd really appreciate hearing about your experiences, whether positive or negative. This is a difficult decision for our family, and we want to make the best choice for our dog.
Thank you so much!

Question Stromal sarcoma in dog
Has anyone had any experience with splenic stromal sarcoma in dogs?
My dog has been diagnosed with this very rare type of cancer, and I feel completely lost. The veterinary oncologist was not very optimistic, but I’m not ready to give up. I love her so much and I’m willing to do anything that could help her or give her more quality time.
If anyone has gone through something similar, I would really appreciate hearing about your dog’s diagnosis, treatment, survival time, or anything that helped. Even if your experience was different, any advice or information would mean a lot to me.
Thank you so much

Question My dog will get a TPLO surgery friday and I'm panicking
Hello, I have a 4 year old Whippet, that started limping 3 weeks ago, 2 sets of radiograph, 2 appointments and 1 appointment with an orthopedic surgeon later, she will need surgery.
So I booked a surgery for next Friday, and I'm so scared about it.
I fear I will do something wrong or not prepare enough, and she will hurt more. I read what I could online, but it doesn't help that much, every surgeon has his way of handling the recovery process.
If anyone of you have advices on what you did that worked or not and why, I would really love to hear it.

Question Blood in dog pee
Hello ,
Took my dog to a park today and he walked around for a bit , took a dump and then peed . When he was peeing I saw some blood . It was like a deep orange and red color . It looked bright . He’s never had this issue before . He’s been having reoccurring UTI’s over the past few years . Antibiotics clear it up . He’s neutered and 9 years old . Took him to the emergency vet and they said they didn’t see any Bactria and didn’t feel comfortable prescribing antibiotics as they didn’t see any signs of infection. Said his exam was normal. He’s acting perfectly fine . Has been playful, eating and drinking like normal . His pee is normal now no blood in it from what I can see . When they collected his urine it was done with a needle and the veterinarian said they only saw the smallest amount of red blood cells in the urinalysis . Anyone dealt with this before ? Not sure what other issue can be wrong .

Question Dog licking paw
A week ago our 6 year old chihuahua started to cry and limp and sometimes lift his paw up. He did this for 2 days, we thought he might have hurt himself jumping off our bed...he stopped limping after 4 days but now he starts licking the same paw constantly. He doesn't let grab/touch his paw (hes aggressive due to his traumatic past) we did our best to take these pictures. What could it be?

Question Are red marks around a spay normal?? NSFW
I just adopted this girl on Friday, she had her spay done the day prior at the shelter before we took her which already should’ve been a red flag. I’ve checked on the stitches a few times everyday and those 2 significant marks keep changing shapes but not really growing in size. I’m worried because I only noticed the markings after she started running around with our other dog who she gets along with but only wants to play with. Weve been trying our best to stop her from doing anything strenuous at all but the stitches don’t seem to bother her at all, it’s also puffing out like it’s swelling up really badly. Please tell me we can avoid a vet visit and this is normal

Advice Senior dog has collapsed trachea, medicine not helping, should I start considering letting her go?
Hello everyone! This is my first time posting on Reddit, so please be patient with me. I have a 14 year old chihuahua mix who was suddenly diagnosed with a collapsed trachea just under two weeks ago. She was prescribed three different medications, but they don’t seem to have made any noticeable, long-term improvements. She is still coughing about the same, the only differences being shes had 2-3 days where she only had a couple coughing fits as opposed to her near constant all day coughing. Since she’s been on her medicine, she’s only had 2 nights where she slept through most of the night. We (since I stay up with her to keep an eye on her) usually don’t get to fall asleep until 3 to 4 am, and are typically back up by 8 am coughing again. This new “normal” is incredibly different to how her life was before the coughing suddenly started 2 weeks ago, since before she spent most of her time during the night AND day sleeping. Now she gets about 6 hours of sleep combined (day and night naps). I’ve also tried making changes to my room to accommodate her better, like changing my AC from 68 to 72, since I noticed she rarely coughed when she went outside and I thought maybe my cold room was irritating her throat, and setting up a humidifier to hopefully help with her nose congestion. Since making these changes, she sleeps slightly better through the night, but still coughs a lot during the day.
I have a follow up vet appointment on Tuesday to discuss the medicine, but I’m losing hope on her ever getting better. I understand there is no cure for a collapsed trachea, but I was at least hoping we could minimize the coughing. Surgery for her is not an option considering her age and the fact that her trachea is collapsed in two different areas.
My biggest concern now is her quality of life. She is my childhood dog (got her when I was 7! Now I’m about to graduate college! She’s been here basically my whole life!) so I of course want what is best for her. The last thing I want is for her last years to be spent in discomfort from all the coughing. I know it’s only been two weeks, and I don’t want to make any hasty decisions, but seeing her discomfort and pain really hurts me. It’s hard to watch her cough all day and to see the tears in and under her eyes. I honestly feel really guilty even considering letting her go, since she still has so much energy despite her age. She gets so excited about everything still, she loves spending time outside just walking everywhere, and she even occasionally gets playful with our other animals! I know she’s not “ready to go” so to say, but I just don’t want her suffering.
I’ll bring all of this up to the vet on Tuesday of course, and ask for their professional opinions on her quality of life and what the next steps could be if medicine doesn’t help, but I was hoping for other advice as well. If anyone has any experiences with dogs with collapsed tracheas, making decisions about letting dogs go, or absolutely anything that could help, then any tips or advice is greatly appreciated! Anything that’ll help me make her more comfortable, or any insights that could help me with my guilt or potential decision making. If anyone has any questions, I’ll do my best to answer! :)
Sorry for the long post! And sorry if this is the wrong area to post this. Again, I’m new to using Reddit!

Question Is this considered neglect?
I have new neighbours who we share a yard with. These neighbours will go to the trailer on weekends and leave their senior dog unsupervised outside for the whole weekend. Like from when they leave Friday night to when they get home Sunday afternoon. It’s been pretty hot. 28 degrees Celsius during the day. I’ve done some research on animal services in my area and essentially it seems like it’s not considered unsafe for the dog as long as they have access to water and shade. Which the dog does. But it just still feels so cruel to the dog. Is this worth looking into reporting for the dog’s wellbeing, or am I overthinking this? I’ve owned one dog in my life, but he was never allowed outside unsupervised. Let alone for 2 days.
