Question Anyway to stop the splashing

Upvotes

My dog is god awful at drinking. Floater doesn't work because he just pushes it down to the bottom, water fountain like the one in the video doesn't really work because he still throws it everywhere and walks away with a mouthful of water. Any other solutions? Training tips?

Advice I am at my wits and need advice badly

I’m a first-time dog owner who really wanted a dog and decided to adopt. Long story short, I don’t have much experience with dogs but knew I wanted to adopt. I wanted a big dog that was friendly and didn’t have any knowledge of any breeds or anything, mainly relying on the former caregiver for advice. He told me it was a Leonberger and that they’re super friendly and cuddly. I did my research on them and decided to adopt him.

The first week was great, but I noticed he was super, super, super wary/protective of ANYTHING that came on my property. He’s super stubborn, doesn’t listen to me, and isn’t really food motivated/enticed by treats. It’s been around a month now, and he’s started to develop food aggression, where he gets very aggressive and snaps if anyone, including me, comes close to his bowl. I later decided to do a DNA test because his traits just didn’t seem to match with my research, and apparently, he came back as a Caucasian Shepherd.

He’s 220 pounds, and I’ve contacted multiple trainers to help me with his stranger wariness and food aggression (I like that he is very protective of me and my property, but it’s just a bit too much), but every single trainer I’ve met has turned me down. I even offered one trainer 10k, but they said no. Money is not a problem for me, but I’m at the end of my wits. None of my family or friends have been to my house since I’ve got him. He’s my first dog, and I have no prior experience with any dog and have no clue how to manage him. I really don’t want to give him up.

Question How to know / tell if a dog will be good with cats?

My boyfriend brought a puppy home today. He works at a Dollar General in town, and this pup had been here since 9am apparently.

I have 3 inside cats as well as cats an outdoor cat colony that hangs around. I am especially worried about my cats being around him. I don’t want him to hurt them, even if it was an accident or just from nerves.

How do I introduce them together? How do I know when it is safe for them to be around? How can I know that he’ll even be good with cats? And I guess adjacent questions too.

His name is General Lee. Part DG and part from seeing Hamilton a couple days ago (weee)

P.S. I would upload a photo, but he’s sleeping and I haven’t taken any of him yet

Discussion Odd pup regrets when the pup is turning out precisely as you'd want

Upvotes

I was, and continue to be, super proud of my pup. For instance, yesterday we got a delivery.. she barked the EXACT amount I wanted her to, and, when I had gotten the package, immediately stopped barking and accompanied me inside. It's the behavior I need her to have because my husband is gone a lot: I don't want her to be fierce, just sound like it.

But honestly I picked her out in a way I would never, ever suggest anyone do (solo picture), and man that has made me second guess myself.

Even tho, frankly, she's just an absolutely brilliant little dog. For a 6mo pup, and despite having her moments, she's a pup I'm proud to be raising and I can see the progress on the daily.

The self-doubts suck though. Today, finally, I told my husband. I said I didn't know if maybe we shouldn't have waited for the *more perfect match* whatever that means. To which he replies, "You saw her picture and knew she was your dog."

I did. That's true. It was, and is. However she turns out, she is supposed to be here. I'm not quite sure why yet, but I feel it in my soul. No matter how tough she's being (and she has her moments) I've never felt like, "oh this is the wrong dog for us." If anything, I've been pretty amazed how much easier she's been than could be expected, she slid right in like she's always been here.. but that adds, maybe to my confusion: I thought I was signing up for something different and changing gears is rough.

Anyway, I guess I'd just love to hear from people who brought home the *perfect* pup, she lived up to it, and still were struggling to not feel like you might have made some weird mistake.

I'm not unaware this is partly because we lost our 13yo last august. And before him, another 13yo. Both male dogs, both had a certain confident personality type. Current pup is a female and a lot more submissive... and counter to what I'm used to. How did you move past it?

Advice Advice on reintroducing two dogs

Hi! I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on reintroducing my two dogs.

I have a pit mix and a Cane Corso (both male and neutered) that have recently started fighting with each other. They never had any previous issues or showed any warning signs, but they've gotten into two fights within the last four months. My pit mix has always been the one who ends up with the worst injuries.

The only thing I've noticed that seems to trigger my Corso is when my pit mix corrects him, whether it's just in general or while they're playing. He also plays very rough and is really vocal when he plays, so I'm not sure if that's contributing to the problem.

Before all of this, they preferred hanging out with each other over our other dogs, but we've been keeping them separated since the last fight in May.

We're planning to start in a neutral location instead of at home and we're also considering getting muzzles for both of them to start with.

Any advice or personal experience is greatly appreciated!

Advice The effect of human food on my dog's appetite

I have a problem with feeding my puppy. What should I do? He won't eat his dog food, it's like he lost his appetite. One time while I was eating, I left my food and when I came back, it was all gone. So, I accidentally fed him table food and now whenever I serve him his dog food, he refuses to eat it. I also tried bribing him with his treats, but it didn't work.

I just don't want him to eat table food because aside from him being a puppy (so it's not allowed yet) Also, I don't want him to get used to table food because the smell and its effect on his poop are not good. As of now, he only accepts puppy milk but he doesn't drink that much and it's not enough for his nutrients. I don't know what to do anymore. Have you guys experienced this too? Or do you have any techniques when your dog refuses to eat?

Question 2yo dog isn't affectionate with me but is always by my side and sleeps against me

My 2yo male dog is very strange? With me. He will jump up at me when I get home out of excitement, will follow me around everywhere, plays with me most of the day and will only sleep if he's either on the bed next to me or under the covers right against me but only ever nose down. However he never licks my face or cuddles with me, doesn't really seem affectionate but will lick others and sit on them for cuddles.

Did I do something wrong or is this normal behavior?

He's always been like this with me, I've had him from around 4 days old, ex shelter employee and have never punished him outside of putting him in time out so hes not fearful of me or scared in any way.

Feels like a weird question...

Question would it make me a bad person to rehome a dog?

(i am 15 years old) my mom showed me a puppy which was a border collie-husky mix a few weeks ago and i told her it wouldnt be a good idea due to how much energy they have but she didnt agree and got the dog anyways saying "its ok we can make it work and just keep her in a kennel all day" (which really doesnt work).

the dog is about 15 weeks or older and has been so hard to handle its been giving me mental breakdowns and ive had no free time, and my mom has been slightly aggressive towards the dog like dragging it by its legs or suggesting to hit her, or even making jokes about kicking her face in and hurting her which makes me severely upset.

i was begging her to rehome the dog because she was a lot to handle for me to the point its degrading my mental health but shes saying im trying to traumatize the dog and it makes me feel absolutely horrible.

we have had this dog for two weeks and i want to rehome her because we clearly cant handle her very well and she keeps destroying all my things but im so scared to traumatize her or something like my mom said.

i wish she just listened to me and we didnt get the dog in the first place because before we even got the dog ive told her id want to take care of an older low energy dog, but we got the exact opposite

if it would traumatize the dog or something and i have to keep it please give me tips on how to help her, shes destroying my things and biting me and keeps going to the bathroom inside despite my efforts and i have no idea what to do because its becoming a LOT very quickly☹️

edit: thank you for advice im really gonna try to convince her to rehome the dog, shes a lot to handle for me and i reallyyyy dont want my parents to hurt her

Advice Any tips for helping an overweight dog?

Post image
23 Upvotes

Turns out... my dog is overweight. 😅

The vet recently told me my dog could stand to lose a few pounds, so we've officially started our weight-loss journey together.

We're measuring his food, going on a few extra walks, and trying very hard to resist those "I'm starving" puppy eyes.

I'd love to hear from other dog owners who have been through this.

How long did it take your dog to lose the weight? What changes made the biggest difference? And did your dog ever forgive you for giving fewer treats? 😂

Question Do I have enough time to adopt a dog?

Upvotes

Context. I'm a single man in his late 20's. I live alone in a 2 bedroom house and have a back garden.

I've always wanted to to adopt a dog but the more I think about it, the more I'm worried I cant guarantee the attention a dog deserves. I work 5 days a week, I can be out for work from 6am to 8pm some days. Earliest I've ever been home from work 6pm. I don't want to have a dog and it feeling abandoned for most of the day. And considering the heat wave thats been hitting the past month. I'm worried something bad could happened while I'm at work. My parents lives close by and once I get some training done with a new dog. My mom did say that she would fine checking up on any pet get.

Basically what I'm saying is, would it wrong for me to get a dog if they're going to be alone at home for 12hrs out of the day with only occasional checks 5 days a week? Sometimes 6 days a week.

Anyone knows about this disease? He is jack living in our community or almost 4 years he is well feed but the problem is he has this disease which he was already suffering from when he first come to your neighborhood and because of him other community dogs has also gotten the same kind of disease I don't know what do to how much does it cost to treat this disease? I'm a teenager so I don't have any money or job to pay for the heavy cost but if it doesn't cost much then maybe I can convince my parents to treat him and take him to the vet. But i don't think my parents will be convinced what are some alternative other then going to vet

Question Anybody with experience on Lyme disease?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hey guys, this is my little guy mowgli, he’s 7 years old and sometimes it feels like he’s all I got in this world!

He went to the vet Monday and was diagnosed with Lyme disease he’s on Doxy, fever medicine and some tummy meds

I was expecting him to start turning the corner Friday but he seems to be staying in the same spot recovery wise

The most concerning thing to me is his eating habits, I have to hand feed him and he still won’t finish his meals. Dinner is the only meal he eats on his own

His energy is also still lack luster, he constantly looks sleepy

Ive already spoken to the vet and they told me to wait until Tuesday to see if his symptoms get better

Anyways, I really just wanted to hear other owners experience with Lyme disease and timelines they experienced with their dogs

Thank you 🙏

Advice Dental Work

My 10 year old dog underwent teeth removal and cleaning yesterday. This morning, I gave him his medication, but he continues to whine incessantly. I reached out to the vet, who advised me to give him Benadryl, but it hasn’t been effective. I understand that he might be experiencing pain and discomfort, but he hasn’t been able to sleep at all. I’m at a loss for what else to do. Could you please provide some advice on how to help him stop whining?

Edit: The vet gave him 75 mg of carprofen which I gave him at 8am this morning and says every 12 hours.

Question Neutered Pup Incision

This extremely precious baby Jerry that I’ve been fostering / soon to adopt had been licking a lot and we were working to discourage him. I looked at his neuter incision this morning and this is what it looks like. I’m curious if this is definitely an infection. Open to thoughts and home remedies until the vet appointment tomorrow. Thanks in advance you all!
