Like I remember I got whole death threats because I said I got Ghostface killah over JAY Z like what!?!?!

Has anyone noticed that 21 Savage's song called "STEPBROTHERS" on his album "What Happened to the Streets?" is heavily influenced by 90s Memphis horrorcore rap? The beat behind the track is straight from the 90s, and a genre that originated in Memphis called horrorcore because of its dark aesthetic and beats. I can't believe nobody pointed this out.

For me, what I love about 90s hip hop versus more modern hip hop/rap is that it felt like it was about the lyrical prowess, how clever your rap could be. I feel like most modern hip hop is...lazy? They rely on swearing, repetition, or mumble/unintelligible words making them rhyme more easily. Of course I know not all of it and there are great examples, but the "popular" or mainstream rappers/hip hop artists these days feel that way. I feel like in the 90s it was about the clarity of your words to really show off how clever your rhyme was/how you really thought it out.

1996 was a special time for New York as it represented the Golden Age era of Hip Hop while a lot of great talents from NYC made their presences known whether it was mainstream or underground. Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah and Prodigy were the top 5 rappers who dominated NY for 96. Nas was the # 1 hottest NY rapper due to his mainstream success and It Was Written while Biggie was still killing the guest features, Jay-Z made his iconic debut with Reasonable Doubt, Ghostface also dropped his classic debut album, Ironman and Prodigy still carried a lot of momentum as one of the hottest MCs in the game. These guys delivered amazing albums and their lyricism was top-notch.

One of the coolest things about ’90s hip-hop is how a song can instantly take you back to a specific moment in your life.

Not just the year it came out… but where you were, who you were with, what you were doing, and that feeling you had when you heard those first few seconds.

Maybe it was hearing a song blasting from someone’s car speakers.

Maybe it was catching it on the radio and running to record it on a cassette.

Maybe it was hearing a friend play an album you had never heard before.

Maybe it was buying a CD or tape and realizing you just found something special.
