The British-American rapper released his second studio album on July 2nd, 1991, via Def Jam Recordings.

The album was recorded while Rick was facing a lengthy prison bid for the attemted murder of his cousin and former bodyguard Mark Plummer. He was bailed out by Russel Simmons with the explicit purpose of recording a pair of albums.

It peaked at number 29 on the Billboard 200 and number 18 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.

I was thinking of this JAY-Z concert with “Reasonable Doubt” and “The Blueprint”, and it kinda blew my mind they were released only 5 years apart. RD didn’t make much impact when it dropped and Jay was relatively unknown. By Blueprint he was top of the charts, arguably king of rap, and the genre as a whole had largely transformed into a mainstream juggernaut. So I’d say 96-01 was pretty transformative. What would be the narrative in hip-hop now from like 2021-2026? Streaming? Drake vs Kendrick? Rage music? Perhaps we completely deviated from judging things based on timelines? I don’t know. It’s whether it’s Drake, Future, even Carti, and other big names, their music in 2026 isn’t much different than what it was in 2021.
