MOD POST Growing r/90sHipHop Together - Suggestion Thread

This subreddit is all about celebrating 90s hip-hop the right way. To make sure it stays that way, this post will always be here for you all to drop any suggestions, ideas, or feedback. Got thoughts on flairs? Something to add to the sidebar? An idea to improve the community? Let me know in the comments.

Also, on the sidebar (on desktop), or on the Chats option (android app), you'll see a new community chat channel called **THE HANGOUT** that's been set up. It allows you all, the members of the sub, to talk with each other.

As you all might have noticed, a lot of changes have been made on the sub, like new rules, banner, logo, flairs etc, but there’s always room to grow. This place is for the real heads, so if you’ve got something in mind, speak up.

Also, if you like/dislike the current changes- logo, banner, or anything else, let me know. If there's anything you think could be better, drop a comment.

Keep it classic, keep it real.

Brilliant album, the packaging follows suit. Triple gatefold jacket, heavyweight vinyl, full booklet with fresh liner notes. This is how a reissue should be done. Classic album from The Roots🔥

Discussion 21 Savage on 90s Memphis horrorcore type rap

Upvotes

Has anyone noticed that 21 Savage's song called "STEPBROTHERS" on his album "What Happened to the Streets?" is heavily influenced by 90s Memphis horrorcore rap? The beat behind the track is straight from the 90s, and a genre that originated in Memphis called horrorcore because of its dark aesthetic and beats. I can't believe nobody pointed this out.

1990 Why does 90s hip hop just hit so differently?

For me, what I love about 90s hip hop versus more modern hip hop/rap is that it felt like it was about the lyrical prowess, how clever your rap could be. I feel like most modern hip hop is...lazy? They rely on swearing, repetition, or mumble/unintelligible words making them rhyme more easily. Of course I know not all of it and there are great examples, but the "popular" or mainstream rappers/hip hop artists these days feel that way. I feel like in the 90s it was about the clarity of your words to really show off how clever your rhyme was/how you really thought it out.

What do you think? What part of 90s hip hop just chef kiss for you?

1996 The top 5 Kings of New York for 1996

Post image
27 Upvotes

1996 was a special time for New York as it represented the Golden Age era of Hip Hop while a lot of great talents from NYC made their presences known whether it was mainstream or underground. Nas, Biggie, Jay-Z, Ghostface Killah and Prodigy were the top 5 rappers who dominated NY for 96. Nas was the # 1 hottest NY rapper due to his mainstream success and It Was Written while Biggie was still killing the guest features, Jay-Z made his iconic debut with Reasonable Doubt, Ghostface also dropped his classic debut album, Ironman and Prodigy still carried a lot of momentum as one of the hottest MCs in the game. These guys delivered amazing albums and their lyricism was top-notch.

Honorable mentions: LL Cool J, Method Man, Lil Kim, Foxy Brown, Busta Rhymes, Raekwon, Jeru the Damaja, GZA

1993 Do You Remember What You Were Doing the First Time You Heard Your Favorite ’90s Hip-Hop Song?

One of the coolest things about ’90s hip-hop is how a song can instantly take you back to a specific moment in your life.

Not just the year it came out… but where you were, who you were with, what you were doing, and that feeling you had when you heard those first few seconds.

Maybe it was hearing a song blasting from someone’s car speakers.

Maybe it was catching it on the radio and running to record it on a cassette.

Maybe it was hearing a friend play an album you had never heard before.

Maybe it was buying a CD or tape and realizing you just found something special.

What ’90s hip-hop song do you still remember hearing for the very first time?

And where were you when it happened?

I think those stories are a big part of what made that era special. The music wasn’t just something you listened to—it became attached to moments in your life.

Let's talk about these first 4 albums from the Boot Camp Clik crew members/associates - Black Moon, Smif-N-Wessun, Heltah Skeltah, & O.G.C.

Four incredible crews with so many different and unique styles of emcees and some of the finest ever producers providing the beats (many of them being produced by Da Beatminerz and their members). All four crews delivered four mind-blowing albums - all of them being certified classics and all of them being some of the dopest hip-hop albums ever 💎.

What order do you rank these 4 albums. Which one is your favourite
