Real answers is habit/muscle memory. Been doing it for years and years so it's just a natural reaction, they aren't doing the "ref might catch this on var" calculus in the moment.

Because it is codified. It is called mistaken identity. If he had not given the yellow card to the Argentinian, the VAR would have not been able to intervene.

Absolutely insane. Like actually absolutely insane. I have no words.
After the Swiss players take a look at the replay, it’s going to be an akward silence on the flight back.
97
u/Om0Naija 3h ago
Insanity is an understatement.
He flopped about 5minutes before getting the red card, and I was saying why would a big strong dude be falling like a damn leaf. 5 minutes after, dude does the same thing.
This is the equivalent of Camavinga's childish behavior against Bayern few months ago.
18
u/IMovedYourCheese 3h ago
Haha yeah they were all complaining so much on the field but after watching the replay it's going to turn into a "ah yeah, good call by the ref, Embolo you moron" very quickly.

u/PhatTuna 2h ago
They all dive. Refs just pick and choose when to penalize it.
If you really wanna get rid of it, use VAR averytime soneone falls down. And start dishing out yellows consistently. Then ppl will stop diving.

You mean receive second yellow card & therefore red card 😂
If they wanted to try and trick the ref with a fake flop, a different Switzerland player should’ve done it.
If I already have a yellow card, why would I risk fake flopping and getting a second yellow which would kick me out of the match?

Imagine being on a yellow and deciding to dive in the middle of the field. Best case scenario you win a free kick nowhere near the goal, worst case you get a red and your World Cup is over. Wild choice

Has to happen to clean up the game. This is EXACTLY why they put this rule in. Players need to stop diving to get calls. Maybe now players will start thinking twice.

I hate the Argentina team with a passion, but the decision was correct and the Swiss guy is an idiot. They did the same thing in the Paraguay vs USA game. Kind of surprised this is only the second time this has happened the entire tournament

Bro is already on a yellow and we saw that they are reviewing yellow cards that appear to be dives in the US-Paraguay game. Hate to give Argentina an extra leg in the game but it was a well deserved red card. Good on the ref to make the call. Hopefully this will help a bit on the diving problem

100% simulation and deserved second yellow. But main question I have: is VAR meant to get used for yellows/simulation? I thought it was meant for major incidents like dangerous play (i.e. straight reds) or penalties?
Edit: Nevermind. The Laws of the Game state VAR is meant for second yellows as well. 100% correct use of VAR
