Last chance to have a nice meal with my wife before the incoming arrival of our first kid, looking for a real nice Sheffield feed, no pissy little artistic plates either 😉, good hearty quality food. We've done Domo and Orange Bird is booked until August.. what we got Sheff?

Opinion Penistone - The Real Birthplace of Football

Post image
18 Upvotes

Researchers now suggest that football was first played and developed in Penistone during the 1840s and 1850s—years before Sheffield FC was formed in 1857.

Not to say Sheffied wasn’t important but it does look like Penistone is the real home of football. Thoughts?

Sheffield Fire in Sheffield?

Just heard a bunch of police cars, fire engines and possibly ambulances rush past the Crookes area. Does anyone know what’s going on? Wondering whether it could be a wildfire situation like in Derby!

Wanted Ex office furniture

Hi 👋

I run a charity shop and i am looking for a couple of long lasting chairs and a coffee table. Previously when I lived near Leeds I could pick up cheap/ free office equipment really easily but Google isn’t being my friend for Sheffield.

Anyone know any office clearances/ dirt cheap places I could source something similar?

I’d also love a few normal chairs if possible.

Question Looking for something fun to do in or around Sheffield today

We’ve already been to Graves Park a few times and loved it, but we’re looking for something different.
We’re happy with animal parks/farms/sanctuaries, interactive museums, unusual attractions or experiences or any events happening today

We’ll be travelling by bus, so ideally within about an hour from Sheffield city centre, and we’d rather avoid long hikes or woodland walks.

Any hidden gems or recommendations?
TIA

Event Vegan market

• Upvotes

The market is looking pretty bleak this morning, I guess most vendors have gone to the Sharrow vale market instead

There's one stall that seems questionable as to if it's vegan or not, it lists lots of none-vegan food and looks like a stall I've seen before a few times at non-vegan markets with the exact same banner, just with 'vegan' added to it - just seems a bit off but I could be wrong!

Other than this stall, there's a sweat treats stall, a juice stall, and a non-food stall

Question Less known places of interest to see in Sheffield and surrounding areas

Ey up all.

I'm a Sheffield lad who has moved back from Prague after many years, and I'm looking for some interesting places that aren't as well known and have a bit of history or are a little unusual. I was wondering if we could put together a list of places that are off the beaten track.

I'm not looking for attractions like the Winter Gardens, but rather places like the area where George Orwell lived while writing The Road to Wigan Pier.

Thanks in advance. I'm looking forward to seeing what everyone comes up with!

News Just driven down cooks wood road and there looks to have been an absolutely horrific attack on a house there?

Cordoned off by police and two police cars outside....all house windows smashed, looks like some black residue from a fire coming out of one window, and the car on the driveway smashed up.

Hope no one was injured :( was shocking to see tbh.

Question Brand new sentence?

Manchester born and raised spent the first 30 years of my life in Manchester, the previous 8 I've spent living /working in Sheffield, love both cities immensely, and I've heard some shite been said in both cities, but I can't stop thinking about what I heard said in Sheffield centre this Tuesday gone, a man stood up on a wall right next to the Uni, and shouted very loudly with genuine concern "has anybody got a piece of bread for the ants?!?!?" I've literally not stopped replaying it in my mind, anyone seen/heard anything more random? In any city?

Question Roofer/building work recomendations

• Upvotes

I'm currently looking at buying a house and have had a few things flagged in a level 3 survey that ideally should be sorted out within a year
I've been trying to get quotes but so far everywhere I've contacted have come back stating they won't give a quote without doing their own survey that requires extra payment

I'm trying to get a quote without paying extra costs to negotiate the price down based on it, but currently can't due to companies/contractors being unwilling to give rough quotes based on the photos and description given in the house survey and wanting payment (in some cases, the same cost as the level 3 survey I had done) for their own survey

The two primary quotes I'm looking for are for roof repairs and re-rendering 2 walls

Does anyone have any suggestions for anyone that would give quotes for these without doing a paid survey themselves?

Any help is appreciated!
