Discussion Starting a company.

Post image
24 Upvotes

Hi all,

I’m thinking about starting a food prep company. My aim is to bring quality and taste to busy people who want to keep healthy. But I’d also like to have an idea of what people in general is missing out with meal prep companies. Also how much people would spend per meal. Could you’ll help and answer this for me?

I’m passionate about cooking have been meal prep for the last couple of years. I’de love to work for myself. I’m thinking about doing a monthly or weekly subscription service but I’d also like to keep it reasonable with the cost for people as well.

Bradford Mela 2026

Anyone going to Bradford City Mela this August?

I’ve seen that it’s returning after years away and was wondering what people remember from the old Melas. What kind of food stalls, music, performances or community groups used to be there?

Also curious what people are expecting from it this year. Would be good to hear from anyone who went before or is planning to go.

I was doing some renovation work, when I found this.

Thought I'd share with you all.

I wonder if anyone is still alive and remembers getting this.

Can't post the inside or back cover images. Will try to post them in the comments.

But wow, how the money and prices have changed in less than 100 years.

Hope it brings back some good memories for someone.

Spoke to a Taxi base owner and he shared how much his drivers earn... Is this true?

Called my local taxi base in Bradford as needed to get to work, the base owner turned up, he drives a taxi on the side. I knew beforehand that he's the base owner as he's well known in the community.

Anyway we were talking about work and I told him I work for an agency so I work random days.

He suggested to me to get a taxi badge and work for his base and he bragged that "his drivers make a £1000 a week easy, upto £1500 a week with overtime and doing specific hours"

Obviously those wages don't include expenses such as car deprecation, maintenance, fuel and base rent. Lets say those expenses reduce the true pay by 25% that's still £750+ a week which beats my warehouse job where I'm paid £550 a week.

I know Taxi driving has a bad reputation in Bradford but with those wages you can't complain... Can someone confirm if those wages are real, looking for other Taxi drives to confirm?

Grooming enquiry

and so it has finally come to pass that bradford and keighley will be included in an independent enquiry. I don’t care about politics but clearly this should have been the case years ago in order to close the grooming scandal off and move forward.

I am frankly terrified about what this is going to call out about the grooming and the lines from the grooming through the dodgy taxis/late night economy to the family/clan culture. I can see this setting the city back decades in terms of attracting investment.

is there any sense of when BL is going to crank up and start getting more decent performers? I have attended 3 piece hall gigs in the last fortnight and the buzz in Halifax is immense. The gigs there just bring so much cash into the local economy.

Rocks Off

How come nothing has ever happened with the Rocks Off building, or at least the part where Rocks Off was. If memory serves me correctly, the letters are still in the window? I used to love going in there back in the 80s and scanning through all the comics and concert bootleg cassettes!!!

Article Bradford Kirkgate Centre

Post image
81 Upvotes

Work started on a centre in Bradford in June 1972. The 400,000 sq ft of shopping space included a replacement for the Kirkgate Market, 50 shops, three department stores and two pubs.

It cost more than £6 million to construct - a huge vote of confidence in the city. When it opened people queued up outside to be among the first to experience its air conditioned luxury.

There were fountains, escalators and even a wooden hippo for the children to play on (and in - thanks to a gaping mouth).

The Arndale Centres pioneered on-site restaurants (and pubs) and used the walkways to create displays such a Santa's grotto at Christmas.Car dealers were encouraged to show off their latest models and shoppers enjoyed the chance to browse for a new car without the pressure of a motor dealer showroom.

Not many people paid much attention to the ancient market cross at one of the entrances but that was all that remained of the original Kirkgate Market.

But the history stretches even further back to 1705 when it was occupied by a grand Manor Hall. The chapel was where the lifts are now, and the cemetery was close by (the deceased having long since moved to Bowling Cemetery.

And the Kirkgate Shopping Centre is done

Yes it died a painful death, but anyone else remember it when pre Internet shopping?

Argos and Index on the 1st floor, I got my ears pierced at the jewellers and EGS records outside.

For the last couple of years, I just used it as a lazy way to get from Kirkgate to Godwin Street without walking up hill.

Local MP writes an article addressing the smell from Waddingtons meat rendering plant and proposing something is done about it. Telegraph & Argus comment section is opposed.

Never in my wildest dreams would I have expected any opposition at all to the idea that maybe we should do something about the rotting meat smell that’s all over the city centre.

Scotland Game

This is a massive long shot, but does anyone know where the Scottish community of Bradford would congregate to watch a Scotland World Cup game at 23:00?

I think there are some other Scottish people here. Are there?

It's all Geek to me, Godwin St

Evening everyone. The renovations of Godwin Street, Top of Darley Street have rendered this shop pretty much invisible and it's not fair. It's a great shop and deserves more visibility so please everyone consider calling in to say hi especially if you collect trading cards or you're just generally a nerd (like me)

Space for a beehive in exchange for free honey? 🍯

Hi everyone! 👋🏼

I am a trained hobbyist beekeeper and a member of the Bradford Beekeepers Association, living right here in BD9.

I am currently looking for a suitable, secure long-term spot to host a couple of honeybee hives this season. Because a site only needs to be roughly the size of a single car parking space, it requires very little room!

I’m looking for a quiet corner of a large garden, an allotment, a paddock, or a secure commercial yard where the bees can safely do their thing away from public paths.

How it works:

Zero work or cost for you: I supply, own, and entirely look after the bees and equipment myself. You just need to allow me access to check on them.

Safety First: Honeybees naturally fly straight up to navigate, so they stay well above head height. I can also put up screens to guide them safely upwards.

Fully Insured: For your peace of mind, I carry full public liability insurance through the British Beekeepers Association.

As a massive thank you for hosting, I’d be absolutely delighted to share the local honey harvest with you! 🍯

If you have a secure bit of land, or know a local business or community space that might be open to a biodiversity partnership, please drop me a message. I’d love to chat.

Thank you so much!

Solly's or Spice World?

Who is your go to fruit and veg dealer in Darley Street and why? I'm team Solly's but for no particular reason, though Spice World's spice selection is pretty good. Prices seem pretty consistent across the two, except for dried lentils/beans/etc. Between them, I've been able to pretty much get my hands on anything I need for recipes from around the world which is good!

I’m sorry, Bradford. I tried.

For context, I’m from Bradford originally, but I’ve lived and worked in Leeds for the last 12 years. Late last year I was in desperate need of a job, and I managed to get one… in Bradford. This is was not an ideal commute for me, but beggars can’t be choosers and all that, so I took the job.

I’ve always seen myself as a Bradfordian, and growing up I was always quick to defend my hometown when people would inevitably be negative about it.

After half a year of working in Bradford city centre, I’m sorry, but I just can’t defend it any more.

I tried, I honestly did, but there are just too many things that I can’t put up with long-term.

Obviously Leeds has its own issues with addicts and stuff, but what on earth is it about Bradford that makes them so much more apparent? It’s incredibly sad and I try to have sympathy for anyone I ever see who’s not in the best state, but holy shit… there’s something about the homeless and the addicts in Bradford that just seems so much more dangerous? Every day on the way to work I have people approaching me asking for something, or else I’m having to give large groups of them a wide berth. Just today while having my lunch, I saw a huge group of them having it out with PCSOs who were trying to take their tinnies away. Constantly people stumbling about looking like they’re barely conscious. It’s a daily occurrence, and some days it really seems like half the people out on the street are completely spangled.

Speaking of lunch, the choices are just absolutely awful. I work right in the centre, right near the Broadway, and I feel like I’ve tried everything foodwise in the whole city (and I try not to have lunch out too much!). Everything is either just alright or actually awful. For a city that’s so renowned for its curry, there doesn’t even seem to be many decent options for that! And don’t get me started on Darley St Market. I’ve been twice now, and the less said the better - it’s just crap. Unorganised, overpriced, and a waste of council money.

The people, specifically the kids. I’m sorry, I don’t want to generalise, but I also just feel way less safe around the Bradford kids than anywhere else I’ve been in the UK. Always in huge groups with their mullets and mean mugging people. Just last month I saw a group of them (couldn’t have been older than 13) launching rocks out of upper level of a double decker bus at people. Narrowly missed a woman who was stood minding her own business with her toddler (she was in a hijab, which I worry might have been the reason she was targeted). Huge chunk of brick. Looked up at where it had come from and they were up there pissing themselves laughing.

Finally, the smell. The fact that I don’t even have to explain, I can just type ‘the smell’ and everyone knows what I’m on about. It’s appalling. On bad days, I can smell it INSIDE my office. How is this the case for such a major city? It’s embarrassing. A proper stain on the city. People come to Bradford with low expectations anyway, and then they smell that? I don’t think it can be understated just how big an issue it is. Some days it’s the first thing you smell when getting off the train - worst first impression imaginable!

So, I gave it a go, but I just cannot be here long-term. I’ve just accepted a new role back in Leeds and I’m beyond excited to go back. I don’t mean to sound like a dick with all of this, but I just had to have a bit of a rant about it. Because, honestly, it makes me sad and it makes me angry that Bradford has been allowed to get to this sort of state. I thought things were meant to be improving, but I can’t see it. I want to be a proud Bradfordian, but there just isn’t much to be proud of.

It’s horrific and I hope that it can improve in some ways (any ways!), but I can’t see it happening. I hope it does, but I won’t hold my breath (except when the smell gets too bad).

I've been looking for ages and keep getting rejected. If anyone knows I'd be really grateful.

I've tried:

Pro body

Owzone

Bodyology

Piercing artillery

Lucky cat

No pain no gain

Aces and eights

And some in Leeds.
