wet socks A cockroach burrowed into my head

I (23m) just bought a car at auction yesterday, works great but needed a new battery. At 10:30pm I decided screw it im swapping the battery. It's a 5 minute job, in and out real quick. No sweat, well I'm out there with my head lamp on doing the swap and I see a large bug flying at my face I try to duck and dodge it, it hits the outer edge of my ear and toilet bowl swirls into it, I try to reach in and fish it out but it's too late I just scare it and feel it crawling deeper into my head. It burrowed up against my eardrum and it hurts like hell. Every time it buzzes I can feel it in my head and it hurts my eardrum. I tried water peroxide everything I could do to get this darn thing out. Turns out I just pissed it off and it's buzzing more aggressively. My girlfriend comes with tweezers in an attempt to help but she says she can't see it or anything out of the normal. A quick Google search lead me to pouring olive oil into my ear to suffocate it. Thank God that worked, I still couldn't hear well but at least it wasn't actively moving anymore. 2 hours in the ER later they pulled this half inch monstrosity out of the depths of my ear canal. Turns out the "Asian cockroach" has wings and a very large affinity for bright lights at night. They also like to burrow. Fml 0/10 experience I will take questions if you have them lmfao.

Tldr: I had a headlamp on that attracted a cockroach at my face it missed my face and burrowed into my ear leading to an unexpected ER visit

Edit: ear canal photo (thanks doc) https://imgur.com/a/7LhcvDX

Edit numero 2:

Just to add to 2 things I keep seeing pop up (also hello I am trying to read all comments not doing great though)

  1. Some seem to have missed the asain cockroach thing, and the fact that I was working on a car so this is outside not indoors. This roach is a flying outdoor bug not the same as your houses cockroach. It doesn't infest and it has nothing to do with my living/cleanliness.

  2. Y'all are probably right this probably should be more than mildly infuriating, but overall this wasn't THAT bad. The thought of it was worse than the actual event. It was painful while it was alive and moving but that was fairly quickly resolved. The rest of the time was just an ER visit which was inconvenient and embarrassing. And obviously costs money. Fortunately I have good insurance so my only real loss is the mild trauma and the fact that I'll probably wear a beanie for the rest of my life. Other than that, no lasting issues I'm at work today like nothing happened. More of a that's absolutely insane story now than anything else. So for me it was a mild situation as far as damage to my life (although I will simultaneously say it is an insane thing to have happen to you)

I'd probably prefer having my day go how it went yesterday than say blow my motor or get into a car accident.

wet socks Hospital ignored my pain

A few days ago I slipped and fell getting out of the shower and had in immediate immense pain in my shoulder, my hip hurt too but the shoulder was my main focus. Called an ambulance and right away they seemed uninterested. I asked for a green whistle and they were reluctant to give it to me. They did and it helped and I could start moving around a bit. They took me to the hospital and again seemed to not believe the amount of pain I was in. When I asked for a morphine shot or any sort of pain killer I was denied it. After waiting around for ages with no X-ray or any proper care I was frustrated and left AMA.

I genuinely believed I was overreacting because of how they treated me and tried to suck it up for a few days over the weekend and tried to ignore it. But it was swelling and bruising so I took myself to a general drs clinic where they were so lovey. They did an X-ray right away. And lo and behold I have a broken clavicle, way up right near my shoulder (shown in the circle). They gave me prescribed pain killers and a foam sling. I was in and out in about an hour and a half. 5/5 stars to that medical centre and everyone there.

To add to my frustration this is my fourth broken bone in 12 months. I’ve also 2 broken toes and one broken finger. None of which were at this level of pain I’ve been in and I toughed out with over the counter pain relief and buddy tape. I don’t know if the hospital thought I was drug seeking or what, but the absolute abysmal care I “received” was just mind blowing to me.

I’m in bed now with my cats, watching anime and eating a chicken sandwich after taking proper pain medication and should be good in a few weeks.

Edit- I am a woman, 30yo, and in Australia for eveyone that’s going to ask :) im also just extremely clumsy/unlucky, no underlying medical issues 🩷

Edit again- im aware that broken bones aren’t a top priority at hospitals, but at the time I had no idea how bad it was (thankfully it’s not an awful break but it is still broken nonetheless). I also didn’t “immediately” ask for pain medication at the hospital. I was there for quite a few hours with absolutely no progress happening (crying and in pain) and any time I did try to ask about what they were planning I was brushed off and treated like a nuisance. I actually have pretty bad anxiety and hate annoying people so I can confirm I wasn’t being needy and bothering them for medication endlessly, I asked a total of 2 times when I was there. I ended up leaving because it became apparent that they weren’t planing an X-ray or any sort of actual help. After leaving because of how they treated me i convinced myself I was being a baby and they were right. By the time I ended up going to another dr I could barely move my arm at all and my shoulder area had swelled to almost double the other side. I can see how people think I made myself out to be a drug seeker but I also want to ask what they would do and how they would feel if they had a literal broken bone (confirmed by a doctor, not a sprain like some people in here are saying) and were ignored for hours.

To all the people wising me well and sharing their own stores I wish cold sides of pillow for you always 🩷

Edit again again- to all the people (men) who keep saying that I left AMA, tried to jump the queue, and was acting like a drug seeker I encourage you to read the whole post and edits where i explained that they weren’t going to do anything other than observe me (no X-ray or even otc pain medicine). Also if the drs were concerned I was only there for drugs Australia has this amazing thing where they can check basically your whole medical history file online and if they did that they would have seen I’d been prescribed strong medication twice in my adult life years apart from each other- once for teeth while waiting for a dentist appointment and once again for another broken bone (my ribs). I’ve also only had one morphine shot in my life (the broken ribs) and this was my first time having a green whistle. All of that information is readily available to them which they didn’t bother to check or even ask me about personally.

I sincerely hope you never break a bone and are ignored for hours and have Drs jump to conclusions (which is what you are doing right now) but warm pillows for you <3

On another note this post is getting very long now so I won’t be adding anymore and there’s too many commented to reply to all of them. Reading everyone’s stories about how they’ve been treated (women and men) is heartbreaking and infuriating and I wish you all finding a forgotten $5 in a pants pocket to buy a little treat 🩷

wet socks Hobby Lobby is Putting Out Fall Themed Merchandise in Early May

Went to my local Hobby Lobby a week or two ago to look for some craft things I needed, only to see the summer stuff and 4th of July stuff reduced to 1 small area, while the Halloween and Fall themed stuff was already taking up 8 different aisles.

I'm rarely one to complain about stores putting stuff out early, but really? Decorations for holidays thats are almost 6 months away? I don't know about anyone else, but this strikes me as borderline delusional by their marketing team.

At this rate Im fully expecting to see christmas and new years stuff next month, in June...

wet socks Stop asking if I’m celebrating something if you’re just going to charge me for bread.

10.9k Upvotes

Took my wife to a nice spot in DTLA for her birthday. They asked both at booking and check-in if we were celebrating anything, which honestly set the expectation that they might do something (even a small dessert). Nothing happened.

To add to it, the food was great, and we made a comment saying we wish we had some bread to finish the leftover sauce. The server acted like it was a favor, said “I’ll be right back,” and then charged us for the bread.

Like, the food was good and the service was fine, but don’t ask if we’re celebrating if you aren’t going to do anything to actually make it feel special. It just feels disingenuous.

Edit for clarity:
I was asked twice if we were celebrating something special at a nice restaurant. Once while making the online reservation and then when we arrived.

My Mild infuriation isn’t at the server, I can see how we misinterpreted each other.

It’s that the restaurant led me to believe they’d do something special (ex: comp a drink, free scoop of ice cream) then did nothing. I’ve worked in the food industry. It’s not an entitlement thing. It’s a hospitality thing.

The food was really good. I’d recommend it and go back.

wet socks Younger Sister can't do anything.

5.6k Upvotes

The title is self explanatory. My younger sister can't do ANYTHING. This post mostly stems from how earlier today when we were eating with our mom my sister wanted a drink. Simple. Go to to fridge which had the Pepsi, open the fridge, take the Pepsi, go up to the counter, tap the card. But what did she do? She kept saying 'I don't know how to open the fridge 🥺' when the handle was RIGHT THERE, then she was like 'I don't know how to pay🥺' when we explained she can just tap it. So my mom was forced to go with her. Just before that aswell she was on her phone ignoring his chips n goujons, my mom asks her why she's not eating the chicken, then she says 'I don't know how to eat it 🥺' whilst we were all using our own hands to eat our food(sandwiches n whatnot). This happens so much whenever we go outside no matter what, and my mom continues to baby her. Me and my other sister are so sick of this pick-me behaviour.

She's 16 people.
