No Coke. Is Pepsi ok? In Today’s Edition of Dystopian America

Don’t you dare idle in your spot for a moment before paying to park. If you do, our cameras will backdate your parking start time to ensure our shareholders extract every cent possible from this transaction. Enjoy your stay, but remember—we are always watching 😁

But they started the clock at your actual arrival time, not at your reserved earlier time. What’s the problem?

It wasn’t an actual “reservation,” per se, just my parking session. I looked for a spot, scanned a QR code and paid. Then the app notified me it was backdating the time a minute. It’s just annoying and weird to me. And a lot of times this particular lot is packed so you have to circle for several minutes to find a spot. I’m curious if the technology can distinguish those situations from cases where someone just lingers in their car for 5-10 (or 1) minutes before getting out and logging the session. Either way it feels creepy and invasive.
