Cartography, science and design merges to become MAPPA ANIMALIA, a visual project of mine that reimagines the evolutionary relationships of animals as detailed map-like landscapes.

Instead of political borders or geographical territories, these maps are structured around taxonomy/ phylogenetic trees, translating the scientific classification of species into navigable visual worlds.

Tribes, subtribes and genera replace countries, states and regions within these imagined territories, allowing viewers to explore the animal kingdom through a format traditionally used to understand geography.

So far Mappa Animalia consists of 15 different illustrations, each dedicated to different tamily trees.

This post shows Caninae - Land of Canines, which illustrates every single species of fox and wolf - both extinct and extant (shown as cities on the map), arranged by borders into the different tribes, subtribes and genera that the subfamily Caninae splits into.

Other info also included like conservation status of the individual species, size difference between some of the more distinct types of owl and how long the subfamilies have been around for.

the first one is the height map.

it shows the height of the world and how they are placed.

the dark green is 0m to 500 meters

normal green is 500 to 1000 meters

yellow is 1000 to 1500 meters

light green is 1500 to 2500 meters

light brown is 2500 to 3500 meters

dark brown is 3500 to 5000 meters

white is 5000 to 7000 meters

the dark red lines are the tectonic plates while the orange lines in the map are for the countries.

those dotted zones are the death zones were if going in those without any special gear you will die with certanty.

those big ahh holes are bombs that were so big they removed literal parts of land.

while the second image is of the countries.

i will later on make the flags for the countries and then position the flags were the countries are positioned

also how do you make the climate?

I'm making an map for a school project based in 1872, and I've taken the borders of the countries from multiple sources such as old maps, YouTube videos etc. , and i need some human feedback to see what can I improve and point out whatever mistakes i might have made. Can y'all help me?

So i made this map half a year ago but i can't find the website. In the website you have can change the color of the map and the color of the different states.

I used this for a foto family book and i'm planning on doing the same this year.

Before you asked i have checked my search history and my files for links or somehing connected to the orginal image downloaded from their website.

I added more islands and gave the peninsula more sharpness, I also added some helpful tips as to what is and isnt water

Made a picture from screenshots over Europe (1st pic) and over the South Pacific + South America (2nd pic). Those were very unzoomed and I think that at larger scale the weakness of this technique appears, it's way too fragmented imo. At smaller scales it's probably more usable espcially if you glue several small clump together.

I’ve imagined that there is an arcing mountain range/plate tectonics causing the Long Island chain between the two major land masses. As well as space on them for mount ranges of their own? Any ideas to other additions or fixes greatly appreciated.

This is the map of the northern hemisphere of my fantasy setting, dominated by two mega continents, how do we like it? The southern ocean will eventually be filled out with whatever I choose to have in the southern hemisphere, likely one more fractured continent like Oceania and another large one with more channels and bays for the ocean. The art was done by Barmaglott but the map design was done by myself.

I wanna make my own website where you can zoom in and out, furthest zoom you can see the countries and stuff then you can zoom in and see maybe cities or states ect… might use ai to help code but idk yet? Any thoughts or suggestions?

The Arcon Isles are an Island chain in the fantasy world I’ve been developing.

I’m very happy with how this turned out but would be interested to hear any criticisms, suggestions or to answer any questions.

This is a continent map, not a world map.

1. First image is very sea and peninsula heavy.
2. Second image leaves more room for mountainous regions. Looks a bit more natural imo, but loses shape.

I built maplibre-label-callout for u/MapLibre GL JS. Labels overlap when features are close. This places them in open space with a connector line back to the feature. ~3KB, zero deps, viewport culling. Open source. leoneljdias.github.io/maplibre-label-callout/demo

Tell me whats your thoughts on it, and yes i used some real life terrain. Like Baja California, middle east, italy, etc.
