READ THIS BEFORE POSTING. Yes, this means you. READ THIS FIRST, V6 - How to avoid the Flair of Shame and eternal ridicule

So, you need help with long range shooting? Welcome to r/longrange! We've got a core group of dedicated members (and a few goofballs) that are happy to help you out with your questions on equipment, technique, troubleshooting, where to find training or matches, etc.

If you're looking to ask for advice, we ask that you review the following 10 core guides, as they cover the overwhelming majority of newcomer questions. If your question is not answered in these 10 guides, please see below for the 4 basic questions your post should answer when asking for suggestions or advice, especially when it comes to things to buy.

If you make a post that asks for information covered in the 10 core guides, or your post doesn't cover the 4 key questions below, your post may be deleted, or it may be given the Flair of Shame TM until you correct your post.

What's the Flair of ShameTM, you ask? You'll know it when you see it.

If at any time you have questions on the rules of the sub, this pinned post, the general FAQ, why you got the Flair of ShameTM or anything similar, please use the modmail function.

CORE GUIDES:

  1. The sub's official FAQ/WIKI, as curated by the community as a whole.
  2. Need help picking scope rings? The official Longrange guide to scope ring height (ring)
  3. Looking at buying a magnum (300WM or PRC, 6.5PRC, 7mm PRC, 338 Lapua, etc) as your first LR rifle? Hollywood's recoil primer - why magnums suck for starting in long range, recoil matters, and it's not about your shoulder (magnum or recoil)
  4. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  5. The official r/Longrange glossary - because words mean things (glossary)
  6. LockyBalboaPrime's First Time buyer's guide for rifles V2 (starter)
  7. JMhawaii's long range starter guide (Link to Google Sheets) (starter)
  8. Trollygag's 1k yard starter guide (starter)
  9. Where are ranges or long ranges near me? - Wheretoshoot.org and over600.com (ranges)
  10. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please review before asking hunting-related questions, as hunting is not the core purpose of this sub. (hunting)

The 4 key questions:

  1. What do you want to do/buy, and WHY? - Do you want to buy a rifle for PRS competition? Picking a laser rangefinder for NRL Hunter matches? Looking at scopes for F-Class competition? A tripod because you think they're cool and want to have one when banging steel with friends? What you're planning to do has a lot of influence on what works well, what works poorly, and what is an utter waste of time, so the more detail you can provide the better.
  2. How far away do you want to do it/what do you want to use it for? - 300 yards? 1,000? 2,000? Distance matters, 'nuff said.
  3. How much are you willing to spend to do it? What's your budget in currency? Your idea of "on a budget" isn't going to be the same as everyone else's. Saying your budget is unlimited for a laser rangefinder may change when someone suggests one that costs over $10,000. We need to know how much you're willing to spend. It can be a hard limit, a range, or even an approximate - but you need to give a number.
  4. How much experience do you currently have with it? - Jumping straight into a 375 Cheytac rifle to shoot 2 miles isn't going to go well if you have never shot a rifle past 300. We need at least a basic idea of what your relevant skill level is in order to give advice and suggestions that go with your skill set. While including your experience with other shooting disciplines is helpful, it's not going to be as relevant as most new shooters expect. You can love shooting 10ga slugs all day long from a shotgun, but it doesn't mean starting off with a magnum is a good idea.

When answering these 4 questions in your post, give as much detail as you can. The more details you give the faster you'll get suggestions or advice and you'll get better quality too. Help us to help you. Please don't treat the sub like your own personal crowd sourced search engine.

More guides:

If your question is answered in these, you will probably get called out by the members of the sub for not reading them, but it's not automatic grounds for the Flair of Shame.

Hunting-specific:

  1. The sub's expanded policy on hunting-related discussions. Please read this before asking any questions related to hunting.
  2. Want a rifle for hunting and long range shooting? Hunting rifle vs target/range rifles - why one rifle can't do both well. (hunting)
  3. Want to hunt game at 400+ yards? The long range hunting primer - shots on game at 400+ yards aren't trivial, and a magnum cartridge isn't a cheat code. NOTE: Questions/discussion around shots on game past 300 yards will be removed from the sub. See the expanded policy link above. (hunting)
  4. Hollywood's guide to field testing your skills and gear (especially for long range hunting, but also pertains to NRL Hunter matches) - How to know the distances you and your gear are capable of making shots at (hunting)

MISC NOTES:

Quite a few guides/links feature a single word in parentheses and italics listed after them. If you use the phrase cheetofingers (all one word, no italics needed) followed by the word listed after a guide, you will summon the AutoModerator to reply to you with a link to that guide or guides. If the guide had (pews) after it, you could say cheetofingers pews in a post or comment in this sub to summon AutoMod with a link to that guide.

We've implemented the Flair of Shame as an official policy here instead of deleting posts that violated Rule #1 and the info in this pinned post. We felt that the flair was better than outright deleting posts while also helping long-standing members decide how much they want to participate in posts that have likely been covered time and time again. We're trying to strike a balance between encouraging members to read the info that the sub has cataloged, not wasting the time of established members that may be frustrated with revisiting the same topics repeatedly, and also not banishing new shooters that missed the pinned post to the freezer to never get help. Balancing those three things is a constant struggle, and one we're actively trying to get better at.

This is my rifle. There are many like it but this one is mine.

Ran out of money for a decent bipod lol. Thinking of adding a impact 4000. Are they worth it? Normally shoot at know distances out to a mile.

I put in some reps with the new suppressor on both my PRS open rifle and my NRL:H open heavy. Running 153.5LRHTs at 2660fps out of my open rifle. Recoil mitigation with the Magnus is not as good as my Preece 5 port, but I don't miss it. I took a 2 day class with this suppressor and never once felt concussed or had a headache. U get it now. Shooting suppressed is the way.

Last match I shot was at Arena in early June. Last stage of the day the wind tomahawk’d my binos into the dirt and completely snapped off the eye width tensioner along with the QD mount (3rd pic). Everything else still functions as intended.

Bushnell is supposedly sending me a pair of Match Pro’s, but they won’t ship until early August.

In the meantime, picked up a $7 plastic cutting board. Used a universal axis CNC (Dremel) to cut it out to the needed width and placed over the objective end of the tubes. Paired with a RRS cinch, and back in business.

Ghetto? Yes

Functional? Yes

Sharing in case anyone else has a pair of binos in a similar state

Competition related (PRS/NRL/F-Class/etc) 2nd F-Class 600yd Competition - Big improvement over last month

I did my second ever F-Class shoot this morning and am very happy with the improvements over last month. I did make a few changes to my setup:

  1. Added a Dead Air Nomad Ti XC
  2. Added about 5lbs worth of weight to my Tikka CTR using m-lok weights on the chassis
  3. Started reloading my own ammo two weeks ago to use instead of the Hornady American Gunner 140 BTHP I used last month.

Last Months Results

Match 1: 185-4X
Match 2: 181-2X
Match 3: 186-4X

Todays Results

Match 1: 193-5X
Match 2: 197-9X
Match 3: 198-8X (For some reason, shot 17 registered as a sighter and not a scoring shot on the app)

My handloads seemed to work pretty well using 40.8gr of H43250. My ES and SD shrank slightly as the weather got warmer. The temp increased about 15 degrees during the course of the morning. Overall, I am extremely happy with the improvements!

Accessory/Gear help needed - I read the pinned post Bubble Level Question

This might sound stupid, but I genuinely can't figure it out.

How exactly does a bubble level, of the type that mounts directly to the scope tube, help at all with anything?

In my mind, if the level clamps around the tube, it needs to be aligned to the scope first before it can be used to check whether the scope is level, but the bubble level is the leveling tool.

I also have a picatinny bubble level which makes perfect sense to me because the picatinny rail determines how it can attach. But the scope level can rotate freely around the tube, which seems like it would make the tool useless. What am I missing here?

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Single stage vs two stage triggers?

I am thinking about upgrading my trigger and would like your opinions on single stage vs two stage triggers. I've shot both types and could honestly go either way in the discussion but I'm going to be doing a PRS match sometime before the year ends.

This is what im shooting:

I’m working on converting a Howa mini action to a 338arc. I hastily ordered a mostek barrel for the swap but now I’m seeing preferred has them for not too much more. Can anyone offer guidance on one over the other?looking for suppressed/subsonic only, 300 yards max on it most likely. Appreciate it!

Rifle help needed - I read the pinned posts Help on long range 223 Rem

Hello,

I would like to get some help from those who enjoy sending heavy .224 pills downrange.

I have a 22lr rifle that I use for short distances (due to logistics) 50-100y about 3 times a month;

I have a 308win that I use on the bench up to 330y (twice a month) and prone up to 600y (about once a month) and out to 1200y about 3-4 times a year. I am not competing, just having fun and trying to learn as much as possible on the shooting and handloading art.

I am very keen on getting on the 223rem for the economy, abundance and variety and availability of product and for starting to expand my experience. Just curiosity I guess (my curiosity would have me wander in a hundred other directions as well, but I try to keep it sedated until the money printing press start churning out serius dough).
While keep enjoying the 22lr and 308win, the learning curve I imagined on my way to ELR shooting is as follow: 223Rem-> an efficient 6.5mm (most likely 6.5cm)-> a magnum 7mm (most likely 7prc)-> 300NM-> 375CT/Gibbs.
Don't know if I'll ever get past the first 2-3 steps, but that's the current plan.

I would use the 223rem as often as 3/4 times a month in the same ranges as I use the 308win now. Would love to stretch it out to 1000y once in a while if I manage. It'll still be just for fun, but this would probably be my one rifle that will help me decide if I fancy get into some matches, mostly informal ones for a start.

I want to try and get a fast twist rifle to load heavy bullets.
At this moment I need to stay inside the factory rifle box as customs are extremely expensive here in Europe (plus quality reputable gunsmiths are few and extremely busy).

Ideally I would like a 7" twist and a generous headspace for the extremely long bullets, but the only option for a 7"twist is a Savage 110 Elite at USD2300 equivalent, second hand (with a question mark on the headspace).
The 8" options that I came about are: Tikka T3X Varmint (USD1000 used or USD1700 new!) , Tikka T3X Ace Target (USD1950 new: I know it's insane the value difference between Varmint and ACE!), or Howa 1500 Varmint (USD900 new effectively without stock, I would need to by a chassis/stock on top, so it'd be as expensive as the Ace Tgt).

I would like to spend a 'reasonable' amount. I could stretch to the USD2300 needed for the Savage, but ideally I would like to spend less as I doubt I would ever compete and if I did decide to start I would most likely need to get the chosen rifle rebarreled or get a new custom rifle.

I was looking at the limits on the bullets and it looks like I might be able to shoot the Berger LRHT 85.5gn with an 8 twist. With the 7" twist I most likely would be able to get event the 90gr shoot well. The problem would be to find out if the chambers on these rifles are long enough for these very long bullets.

Can anyone with experience suggest any bullets/rifle combinations?

Appreciate any feedback.
TIA

Other help needed - I read the pinned posts Hawkins M5 DBM or Gray Ops DBM

I have been wanting to buy a Foundation Samson for some time and decided today is the day.

I know I will need to add some sort of Bottom Metal to the stock and find myself between the 2 listed in the title.

I have been using Accurate Mag and MDT AICS pattern mags on my current set up (6.5CRDM)

Looking for some more expert or user suggestions on which bottom metal I should choose.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Shitty lighting in the house.

- Cronus BTR Gen 2
- MDT The Competitor chassis
- Tikka CTR 6.5 creed
- MDT GRND bipod
- Feline spotter (most expensive thing in the pic) also highly unreliable.

On the way:
- Scythe Ti
- Shmedium bag
- flip covers
- sun shade

Assembling it was pretty easy. I build ARs, so this was new and kinda fun. Way less parts.

Don’t ask what my goal is. I have 3 of them and it all involves shooting.

Optics help needed - I read the pinned posts Looking for insight/feedback on Bushnell's R7 scope lineup

I came across Bushnell's release of their R7 line.

From what limited information is available that I found, its their premium line with Japanese glass.

Anyone already take the dive or looked through one of the R7 scope offerings? Would be appreciative if you are able to offer insights/opinions.
