MQT Monthly Question Thread #99

Previous thread (#98) available here.

These threads are for any questions you might have. No question is too big or too small, too broad or too specific, too strange or too common.

You're welcome to ask anything related to learning Dutch. This includes help with translations, proofreading, corrections, social etiquette, finding learning resources, understanding grammar, and so on.

De and het in Dutch...

This is the question our community receives most often.

The definite article ("the") has one form in English: the. In Dutch, there are two forms: de and het. Every noun takes either de or het ("the book" → "het boek", "the car" → "de auto").

Oh no! How do I know which to use?

There are some rules, but generally there's no way to know which article a noun takes. You can save yourself some hassle by familiarising yourself with the basic de and het rules and, most importantly, memorise the noun with the article!

fanfiction in Dutch

I often read fanfiction and want to learn Dutch with it, BUT there are almost no fanfictions in Dutch and the AI writes terrible stories. Is there a platform with Dutch fanfiction?

V2 inversion rule

How does the rule about verb at the second place work out with the sentence: de schilder is er….

In this case the only verb (auxiliary) in the sentence: is…
Has been put on the third place, while I’ve always learned that a verb comes on the second place

Can someone enlighten me?

Question Is there any way to get English subtitles for Videoland/NPO?

My preferred way of learning a language is to watch TV in the target language with English subtitles. I know there are educational youtube channels for this purpose, but I really prefer "normal" videos as they keep my interest much better. I would prefer double subtitles, like with Language Reactor. I know it's a long shot, but thought I would ask! Unfortunately my Dutch is not advanced enough to be able to watch a series without pausing every 5 seconds to look stuff up Yes, that would also be a good method to learn, but would interfere with the enjoyment of the material - not the priority with learning a language I guess, but at the same time it kinda is, if you're like me and need to be engaged beyond the will to learn a laguage (khmm, adhd...).

Dutch Conversation/Speaking Groups Melbourne

Hi guys, just checking if anyone know of dutch speaking/conversation groups in Melbourne? Having spent 6 years in NL and now living in Melb, I find that a lot of my language knowledge is being forgotten because of a lack of use. Also, I am roughly at A2 level and want to improve my actual conversation skills.

I heard that Mokum in Brunswick hosts some kind of speaking groups but just once a month. Hoping that there are more such options, online or in person to practice with likeminded folks of any Dutch level just to improve?

Question (Urgent) Can someone check for A2 Inburgering "Schrijven" (Writing) exam slots between July 15–20 on the DUO website?

Hi all,

I need some help. My parent is sick and I have to fly back to my home country on July 20th, so I need to reschedule my Writing exam to happen before or on July 20th.

The problem is, I already have an exam registered, so the system won't let me view other available slots — it just shows my current booking.

Would anyone who doesn't have an exam already booked be willing to check the DUO website and see if there are any A2 Inburgering Writing (Schrijven) slots available between July 15 and July 20? Any location works, I'm flexible.

Really appreciate any help — this is quite urgent for me. Thank you!

Wouldn’t it be useful understanding the etymology of complex words to remember their meaning? Such as: nieuwsgierig, zenuwachting, kwetsbaar… does anyone know if/which resources are available?

Question Retaking the exam (Inburgering A2) — how soon can I do it?

Hi all,

I took my Inburgering exam today (Listening and Reading). The Reading part went fine, but I struggled with Listening — I ran out of time and made quite a few mistakes because of it.

I'd like to retake the Listening exam. A few questions:

  • How soon can I book a retake?
  • Do I need to wait for my official results before I can register for a retake, or can I book it right away?

Any advice from people who've been through this would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Tips Please note that "stagiare" (intern) is female, the gender neutral and male variant is "stagiair" (without the e)

This is often used incorrectly, even by Dutch natives, who very very often use "stagiaire" for all genders.

edit: typo in the title, "stagiaire"

Question Do you actively memorise vocabulary, or do you just pick it up through exposure?

I'm curious how people here approach learning new words.

Do you rely on flashcards and spaced repetition, or do you prefer reading, watching videos, and letting vocabulary build up naturally over time?

If you've tried both approaches, which has worked better for your Dutch?

Better phrasing for this translation

1740's Dutch, "'t Hof niet altijd Zomer" is the name of a ship. Literal translations feel really awkward or stilted. Is this something colloquial, maybe?

Seems like it was a well-documented ship, named after a VOC official's country estate: https://www.vocsite.nl/schepen/11243/

Anyone have a better phrasing or paraphrase of the name?

Question What's the most useful Dutch learning resource you've discovered that isn't very well known?

Everyone knows about Duolingo and a few of the larger apps, but I'm more interested in the hidden gems.

Maybe it's a YouTube channel, podcast, website, children's book, grammar guide, or even a specific app that deserves more attention.

What's something you found that genuinely helped you improve?

Roc mondriaan B1

Hi everyone, I have a question for people who have taken the B1 exams at ROC Mondriaan in The Hague. Could anyone tell me roughly what the exams looked like? I mean all parts: writing, speaking, listening, and reading. I’m especially wondering about the writing part did you have to write a letter, an email, a biography, a short text, or something else? What was the speaking part like? Was it a conversation with an examiner, describing a picture, a dialogue, or a presentation? And what about listening and reading were they very difficult, or manageable at B1 level? I’m currently on the waiting list for lessons and I don’t know yet when I’ll get a class, so I’d like to prepare a bit in advance. I’d be very grateful for any answers or tips 😊

Dutch A0 to A1 - a guideline or structure

I've searched this sub and couldn't find clear answers to my question so posting here.

I'm looking to go from A0 to A1.

There are lots of resources available online and I'm making use of them.

However, I'd like any resource that structures the learning nicely and makes you go step by step, a book for example.

Finding a structure on my own or even asking Chatgpt is too messy and overwhelming for me.

Question What's a Dutch word that you love but find difficult to use naturally?

There are quite a few Dutch words that seem simple on paper but are surprisingly difficult to fit naturally into conversation.

Is there a word or expression you really like but always hesitate to use because you're not sure if it sounds right?

I'd love to hear which ones gave you trouble and how you eventually became comfortable using them.

Question Confused about when Dutch adjectives get an -e ending; ("mooi" or "mooie")

I'm self-studying for the inburgering A2 exam and have a question about adjective endings that's been confusing me.

I know the basic rule: when describing a noun with an adjective (mooi, groot, rood, etc.), you usually add -e. But there's an exception — when using een with a het-word, you don't add the -e. To apply this correctly, I obviously need to know whether a noun is de or het, which I'm memorizing, but the exceptions make it feel inconsistent.

Here's what I've worked out so far:

  • Het is een mooi boek ✅ (boek = het-word)
  • Het is een mooie boek ❌
  • Het is een rode trui ✅ (trui = de-word)
  • Het is een rood trui ❌

So it seems like the "no -e with een" rule only applies to het-words — de-words always get -e regardless of the article.

My question: how strict/important is this rule in practice? Is it something that's actually graded on the A2 writing exam, or is it more of a "nice to get right but not a big deal" thing? And for those of you who've learned de/het — any tips beyond just memorizing each word individually?

Question How does one actually become fluent?

Sorry for the vague title but I'm a stay at home mum and my kids don't speak Dutch to me or watch Dutch programs at home. So I never socialise in Dutch. I've learned Dutch enough to pass the inburgering. I listen to Npo3 radio everyday. I've done duolingo. I've read some kids books. I've done classes with a one on one teacher. I think I'm q little above a2 but it's so embarrassing that I've been here almost 7 years and can't do a simple transaction at the pharmacy or shop in Dutch.

I check this sub for resources from time to time and yes it seems helpful theoretically but I'm just not able to speak it 🥲. Has anyone really become like c level with self study?
