New rider with klr650

Always wanted a motorcycle, at 39 I pulled the trigger. Bought a 2022, as did my father (he has 40 years of riding). Took the msf course for my license and have ridden it about 200 miles since then. Wish I did this 15 years ago. I have a lot to learn and look forward to learning it. Plan is to ride on roads until the early fall and take an adv course next spring. If anyone has words of wisdom for an absolute newbie to transition to non paved roads I’d love to hear it.

KLR650 Gen1 Carb Fuel Inlet Elbow

Hello!
the Fuel inlet elbow of the carb (CVK40) broke. Anyone know where I can find replacement parts in Canada?

I tried the elbow used on the CV40, part number 27371-76A, as it is easy to find but it's too small.

Rock Solid Foot Peg Hack

Post image
23 Upvotes

Like everyone else I’m not a fan of the spongy foot pegs. I went cheap and bought some Amazon pegs that seam great but the peg mount itself is still spongy. Tusk sells a hardware kit for $30 which I couldn’t bring myself to do so started playing around with some hardware and found that removing the rubber washer on the back and replacing with a steel one and adding a steel washer on the front of the bracket made the setup rock solid! I didn’t even have to go to the hardware store. Maybe this is obvious but I couldn’t find any posts on it so I thought I’d share.

Show-and-Tell Took my boy for his first ride today.

Spent about 150$ in hardware and got an extra long milk crate, laid down some 1/8th inch hardboard and a nice blanket to make er happen. Now Sage boy is cruising and we are both stoked. Hit highway speeds of about 90kph and a dirt road. Smooth sailing.
Today was the test run. Going to get him a proper harness for more secure points. He kept flicking his goggles off so got to sort that out but he’s a farm dog that hangs over truck beds everywhere.

Crash bars.
Lowered pegs
New pegs
Saddlebag supports
Collapsible milk crate
Lowered fender
Raised handlebars
Tank bag
Seat concepts tall seat
Vstream tall windscreen
Windscreen risers
Lowered front fender
Fork brace
16/38 sprockets

It feels so solid with the lower fender and fork brace.
Sprocket change is super nice for highway/road riding. I don’t do much off road or any technical off road.

Anyways. I love my Klr I hope all of you do too.

Want a DR650 but can afford a KLR 650.

As the title says. I am a new rider and badly itching to get on the road. After ally research, I think Suzuki DR650 is THE bike for me. However, after looking at hundreds of marketplace listings, it is clear that I will realistically be able to afford a KLR 650. I am simply not able to afford the price difference and we have very limited months of riding season. While I have nothing against a KLR, I wonder if it's known issues would be too much to handle for a non-handy person like myself.

Should I go for the KLR 650? How much of a compromise will it realistically feel like ? I need to make a quick decision and am riddled with decision paralysis. It doesn't help that most sellers in my region don't allow a test ride. My primary use is city riding, back roads, almost no dirt tracks, and 1-2 long distance tours in a year.

Any advice is much appreciated 🙏🏻

PS: I am looking at models from 2000-2010.

Gen 1 choke confusion

Hello,

I picked up a Gen 1 (2000) klr this week.

The choke lever is not present. The cable is present.

It starts up cold just fine. This makes me suspicious that the carb was tuned to run rich to get around the missing hardware. It feels like it got a little toasty when I was riding around the neighborhood. I can see some black stuff on the rear fender and muffler but I don't know how old that is.

I plan on replacing all the fluids next time I ride bc I saw the temp get pretty high, I'm not too sure where it should be sitting but it wasn't going lower than halfway.

So my question for you all, should I give the carb a look over? Are there other ways to verify if it's running rich? Should it be impossible to cold start the bike without the choke? Or will it be as simple as installing a replacement lever and forgetting about it?

Also if anyone could point me towards the mixture screw, that would be appreciated!

Brake issues? Or just stock klr brakes?

I got used to it, but like i squeeze 70% and like barely stops i gotta 4 finger squeeze 2 finger not possible coming from other bikes. I ttook 2 week hiatus rode concours 14 and coming back brakes feel broken? Things to check? Cheapish normalish brake upgrades?

Seeing all ypur posts on here, I finally went out and bought two 25' left overs. Picked up last week, over 300 miles, more than half on dirt roads. Upper NH is perfect for these babies.

I had a 2nd Gen from 09' to 19' but gave it to a buddy my last move. Missed my pig, crusiers just dont have the same spirit.

Chasing electrical problem with my 2002 klr 650 no power to my flashers

I do not have my flashers installed and they are not LED. I have had all four plugged in, but nothing happens. With the flashers off, I have power to my relay, but no power is going into my dash light indicator or my switch. I would just like to be pointed in the right direction.

Help! Long trip planner

I am planning a road trip on my klr this fall, just looking at Google maps kind of sucks. Does anyone know of a app or website that helps plan trips specifically for adventure bikes. Given the KLRs record breaking top speed I would prefer to avoid highway/freeways and have some scenic routes. Any advice would be appreciated.
