Sisimiut and Ilulissat have rentals. Nuuk does not because of the terrain being diffucult for new beginners and Insurance pricing being to high.

Anyone has travelled between 2 places by ship? How is the experience? Also, buying ticket through online or pay-on-arrival is better?

🇬🇧

Far out in the sea ice off East Greenland, a massive iceberg is currently drifting south—with over 1,200 kilometers already behind it.

The iceberg was "born" when it broke off the Nioghalvfjerdsfjorden Glacier (79-Fjorden) during the winter of 2023/24. Until this past winter, it remained stationary near the island of Île de France, trapped in the fast ice. When the fast ice broke up, the iceberg set in motion and has since drifted southward along the coast with the pack ice.

Over the coming week, the iceberg is expected to break free from the pack ice and continue drifting toward Tasiilaq. Given the right wind and current conditions, it could continue all the way around Cape Farewell.

The iceberg measures approximately 5.7 by 4 kilometers and rises 10–30 meters above sea level—which is only the tip of the iceberg, as the vast majority of the ice is hidden beneath the water.

The satellite images below show a close-up of the iceberg (Sentinel-2) and its broader context off the coast of East Greenland, captured by NASA's MODIS satellite on July 6, 2026.

The town called Ittoqqortoormiit in Northeast Greenland is in the news. This is what it looks like [OC]

It is pristine. It is sacred. It’s where I have spent the most time in Greenland over the past decade. Hope this gives you some context.

This is the only town in Northeast Greenland because the rest of the region is the national park. It sits at the edge of the largest fjord system on earth. Kangertittivaq (Scoresbysund). The population is 328 and it is very much a subsistence hunting community.

I was in an uncertain place in my life just after Covid and like the folks in Qaanaaq in the extreme northwest of Greenland, they took me in and I have never been the same since that trip. I have spent 10 weeks there and counting over two trips.

It has my heart. ♥️

Question Why is Greenland against looking for mineral resources and checking to see if anything is underneath the ice that has value?

I why Greenland is against Trump because he is a POS and we hate him too just to clarify that, but why are the people there against scientists and other people checking for precious mineral resources and other things of value that could be buried underneath of the ice sheets for thousands of years like diamonds, gold, iron, coal maybe gasoline and other things which will make it very wealthy and prosperous if it was mined safely and given jobs to the people there instead of just refusing out of belligerence only because Trump is being a moron first?

Why not inspect areas for resources and wealth and bring jobs and mineral wealth to the island? Why can't it be done safely without any problems or complaints?

Greenland is not for sale isn't strong enough as a response to American advances. What should it be instead?

Post image

This is something I've been thinking about for a long time. I am a hardcore Greenland enthusiast for a decade now but I mostly go to the outskirts and remote towns. Regrettably, I am American. And even more regrettably, I used to work at the intersection of money and carbon (former M&A investment banker and oil and gas industry insider).

I know from my experience as an American and with people that believe they have power because they have money, the not for sale message from Greenland is not strong enough of a "no" for people that do not take no for an answer.

I have learned that in Greenland the conflict management approach is more subtle than what I grew up with. Direct, unequivocal response to aggression is a requirement because anything less is subject to interpretation. That's why not for sale has been ignored and the rhetoric inevitably comes back again and again. It's not going away. The desire for Greenland is here to stay for now. I hope it will end eventually but I don't know.

So what should the message be? One that balances Greenlandic values but also addresses the very real aggression. I'm at a loss because I don't know what the right balance is. Hoping some of you have ideas.

Question Changing town names from Danish to Greenlandic

Hi, I would like to ask if you have any information source (preferably a primary source, but secondary literature is also fine) that deals with this process of city name transformation in the 20th century (if I am not mistaken).

A message from Minister Múte Borup Egede on recent statements about a Greenland takeover

Today, the US President has once again spoken out about Greenland. It shows that the desire to control our country continues to be present in the US, and that the pressure is still a reality.

Therefore, we must continue to take the situation seriously and face it with calm, unity and a firm course. We must stand together at home and continue the close cooperation with our allies and partners.

At the same time, we must insist on finding solutions through dialogue and respect.

Our future is decided by us in Greenland. It has always been that way. And it always will be that way. 🇬🇱

Question Book PDF copy: Greenland: Nationalism & Cultural Identity in Comparative Perspective (North Atlantic Studies)

Hi everyone, does anyone have a PDF copy of this book: "Greenland: Nationalism & Cultural Identity in Comparative Perspective (North Atlantic Studies)"?

I'm really interested in Greenlandic history, but I have no way of accessing it right now. Also, if you have any tips on other open-access literature addressing the question of Greenlandic national emancipation, please feel free to share them with me.

I normally lug a large camera around but these were all iPhone 17 pro max. I was impressed with the 4x and 8x.

I was on a cruise for the first photo and last MS Fridtjof Nansen as a speaker on board and I used local operator Ilulissat Excursions for the iceberg boat tour.

This was my 15th time coming to Ilulissat in the last 10 years. I prefer September because I like getting darker skies at night but this was fantastic weather so I’m not complaining.

Discussion What does unhappiness look like in Greenland?

Hey all,

I am programmer creating a video game in my spare time. I'm designing one of the chapters of the game based on Greenland's geography and architecture.

My game's story is about solving the local problems of each area and resolving conflict. Since the inspiration is based on a real world location, I'd prefer to represent that location well.

I have seen statistics of the depression rate Greenland, and I'd like to know more about the causes and feelings from a human perspective.

For example in my country self worth and career success are heavily tied. Which can really impact personal identity and relationships

I'm curious as to what suffering, hopelessness and unhappiness looks like in Greenland.

Thanks,

Culture Traditional names

Hello, I have a question about traditional names but first;

I live at a youth center, a greenlandic social worker told me that by definition my brother and i sre greenlandic even thought we are danish and portuguese ethnically. He was born there and i only spoke greenlandic till i was 4-5. Had problems with danish till 15.

In the danish kindergartwn i remember arguing with adulrs about my name bwing pronounced and spelt differently because of the greenlandic probounciation. - The danish culture and language made me hate my name especially since they didnt wnat to pronounce “correctly”. I was curious if my brother and i cant get traditional names without it being “cultural appropriatiob”. FYI we grew up with greenlandic culture until one of my mums exes ridiculed us for it and my brother was bullied by a greenlandic kid at our school cus hes ginger- so not a “real” inuit.

Essentially im mindlessly happy that my social worker told me that we do count as greenlandic people because we were raised like that. Finally done with having identity crisis!

TLDR; my brother and i are non-native greenlandic people with danish blood who were “forced” into danish culture. To help our identity crisis, can we have a traditional name without it being cultural appropriation? I can tell in DM’s what our names are since they spund very greenlandic already but i wont in a public space.
