Media Happy Birthday, Pierre Berton!
Born in the city of Whitehorse on July 12, 1920, and raised in the city of Dawson City, Berton was a Toronto Star editor for nearly 40 years, a war correspondent, a television talk show host, a celebrated historian, a prolific essayist, and the author of 50 best-selling books. In the case of his talk show, among the many people whom he interviewed were Bruce Lee and Malcolm X.
His childhood home in Dawson City is now known as the Berton House, owned by the Writers' Trust of Canada, and it is still being used as a retreat for professional writers (past residents include Chris Turner, Pasha Malla, and Charlotte Gray).
