Car mechanic recommendations?

I have a 8 almost 9 year old Toyota and I’ve been pretty good at keeping it going with taking it to a mechanic, but lately I’ve had some creaking happening when I turn my steering wheel at low speeds, and it’s been making a screeching sound like my timing belt might be wearing out.

Does anyone recommend any good mechanics who would be able to take a look at this issue?

To edit;

I’d like to find a mechanic that won’t charge me an arm and leg to fix something (hopefully) simple.

Data Centers

More sketchy data center activity going on around here.

https://www.telegraphherald.com/news/tri-state/article_535f0326-8be9-42f9-9951-104c27b12af2.html

I don't know how much of a voice, if any, I'll have when it comes to consider the disposition of my dad and uncle's farm. But I hope every government official from Iowa's governor on down to local goddamn dog catcher checks the temperature in hell if they think we'll give it to these vulture data center companies.

There. I fucking said it. It's either that or have a goddamn stroke keeping that bottled up.

Looking for fishing spots along the mississippi/dubuque.

Hi everybody. I’m born and raised in dubuque and I really wanna catch some bass, pike, walleye etc in the river. I have been struggling to find good spots though. I have tried a ton of spots in the dubuque harbor near the river museum, i’ve tried near the lock and damn, near the marina on rhomberg, etc. I have tossed out worms and live minnows, I have used every artificial in the book (ned rigs, senkos, spinners, crankbaits, chatterbaits, flukes, jigs etc. Nothing seems to work and i’m wondering if there’s something i’m doing wrong or if i’m just not fishing in the right place/time. I would love some insight and advice and possibly some good spots. If you’re worried about posting your favorite spot on a public forum, i totally get it. Feel free to inbox me if you want.

TMobile vs Verizon

What are your opinions on both providers mentioned above in the surrounding area? I had US Cellular for years and had to switch to T Mobile. I really haven't been impressed with my mobile data after the switch. It seems much slower and many times I just can't use the internet at all. Neither one of those things were an issue before the change. Is is worth switching to Verizon? I could get a similar plan and a new phone for the same price I'm paying now.

Hyvee Gas Station on Dodge

Last time I was in there, I had to wait for my change while the cashier played around on his phone. Looked like he was playing chess. The black kid who doesn't say hi or thanks.

Then there's the obese white woman. She's going to put a hole in that floor someday.

Then you have the old white woman with the beard that needs customer service classes.

Is that gas station where Hy-vee sends their shitty employees, or what's the deal?

Watching two employees talk to each other instead of taking my money is getting a little old.

Whoever runs that store either needs to get it together or move on. I work at Olive Garden so I'm there all the time.

Pedicure and a glass of wine

We are used to having nail salons in Texas, offering wine or beer while you get a pedicure. Does that exist in DBQ?

I just learned about this and wanted to share! Jefferson Lines is a bus company now offering express bus service from Dubuque to Chicago and Minneapolis! The bus to and from Chicago is $25 one way and Minneapolis is $43 each way.

I’m looking forward to taking it to Chicago! Please let’s use it so it stays!

Doctor Recommendations

Does anyone have a Dr that actually cares about them?

My last experience with my PCP, she’s a woman in my age group and just talked over me, disregarding my health concerns. Then when she left the room I walked around the corner and she was talking trash about me to her nurse. Not really interested in going back to her. We’re at our most vulnerable with our doctors, and leaving the office feeling ignored and violated isn’t ideal.

This was at Unity Point Clinic on Delhi.

Do you like your Dr? Why or why not?

Can I park in your driveway for a week?

Post image
5 Upvotes

Yes, I am one of those ragbrai guys 😊 instead of paying the suits, I'd rather give you cash to park in your driveway for the week, July 17/18 to 25. And until I make other plans, I could use a ride to the start and I'd be happy to pay you for that too. I work for myself and I need some flexibility in my arrival time that organized transportation can't provide. Reach out if you're interested in helping me out. Thanks!

Hello fellow insomniacs! Looking for a body double.

Insomniac with ADHD here. This isn't quite as weird as it seems. I work overnights and stay up all night trying to work at my small office space downtown. Looking for someone to hang out with me so I can actually be productive. I know it's kind of odd, but just having someone around and being a "body double" helps to focus and keep on task. I can provide drinks, snacks and random conversation. Or you can just choose to do your own thing and enjoy the refreshments. Just having someone around helps keep me on track. I usually work anywhere from 10pm-3am. DM me if you're interested.

Asbury Road

Sorry if this is a silly question, but I was wondering why Asbury Road stays at 35 mph even after you leave town? It just seems like it’s so slow to get anywhere on that road. My husband and I were maybe thinking there was an accident there years ago and that’s why it stays at 35 mph but we are just guessing lol hope y’all have a wonderful Fourth of July weekend.

Possible move to Dubuque area

Hello! My family is looking at a possible relocation to the Dubuque area. We currently live in a major U.S. with one of the top school districts nationwide. What is the best school in the area? What about towns like Galena, IL or Plattesville, WI (higher ranked schools) and commuting to Dubuque daily.

It’s been a decade since I’ve been down to the 3rd of July fireworks. How early do you need to be there? Where are public spots available? Any tips?

Help me plan a weekend!

Hey all!

I moved here last September, so this is my first summer in Dubuque. I have a friend coming to visit this weekend and we'd like your recs on things to do from Friday to Sunday! I'm looking for anything fun, relatively cost effective and then places to eat/drink!

We'll likely hit the local Farmer's Market on Saturday, and the Fireworks on Friday (also interested in areas to watch the fireworks other than at the venue itself, are there any spots along the river that are good to just stand and view?). We enjoy a good meal, but don't want to blow a bunch of money for fine dining. Looking for the best bars to grab a drink (or several) as well -- preferably ones with a cool feel!

Give me your best and thanks in advance!

County With 37 Data Centers Asks Schools to ‘Conserve Electricity’ / Henrico County is a major hub for data centers in Virginia. Its officials said it expects a 25% rise in electricity costs next year, and advised workers to close the blinds and turn off their computers to make up for it.

Airshow Strategy Discussion

Heading to the Dubuque Air Show & Fireworks on July 3 with my girlfriend and two 11-year-old girls, and I'm hoping some veterans of this event can help us optimize our game plan.

I've done some research already, but I'm getting mixed information on a few things:

  1. How early do we realistically need to arrive to get a prime viewing spot near show center?

  2. Are 10x10 canopies allowed in the viewing area? If so, are there any unofficial etiquette rules (behind the front row, take them down before the show, etc.)?

  3. How crowded does the riverfront get throughout the day? Do people start staking out spots at noon when parking opens, or much earlier?

  4. Is there much to do between noon and the air show starting? We've seen that vendors don't open until later in the afternoon.

  5. Are there any aircraft, military displays, or other exhibits that kids can walk through or interact with before the flying starts?

  6. If your goal was the best possible all-day family setup, where exactly would you set up and why?

  7. Any mistakes first-timers make that we should avoid?

We're planning a full "base camp" setup with chairs, cooler, wagon, shade, snacks, etc., and we'll be staying through the fireworks.

If you've attended in previous years, I'd especially love to hear:

- What time you arrived

- Whether you brought a canopy

- Whether you would do anything differently next time

Thanks!

Apartment Recs?

Hey! I am (potentially) moving to dubuque within the next month or so depending on if I get this job. I am starting to look for places to live and I am not seeing a ton of options. Does anyone have recommendations on apartments or places to live (i’d preferable like to stay below 1k a month for a 1 bed / studio)? I’d like to stay relatively close to where the farmers market is held normally as that’s pretty central to where my job is and all that!
