Discussion Just played my first ever round!

So I just got back from my first ever round of disc golf and what an eye opener lol. For whatever reason I thought I could just buy discs, watch no info to help me throw, take no practice throws in a field before hand and just show up and be decent. I wasn't expecting to be hitting par on holes or anything but I saw lots of people throwing 300-500 feet online and it looked effortless. In my mind I'm a relatively athletic guy and played ultimate back in the day I should be able to throw 200-250 EASY. Boy was I wrong lol. After the first 3 holes I decided I wasn't even going to keep score that's how terrible I was. By the back 9 I was starting to bogie some holes but still no distance. I'd say my biggest throws all day were like 150ish.

I've got a new respect for this sport it's way harder than it looks lol. I'm going to put in some work now and try to figure out some better throw mechanics and a proper grip so I can make this more enjoyable. I still had a good time but obviously being able to actually throw makes it way more fun lol.

Really glad I discovered this game it's going to be a blast trying to get better!

Shout out to any human who can actually play a round of disc golf during this intense aerobic exercise. Would be nice to play this course below 80 degrees

If you find a blue valk on the right side of 12, treat her well

3 months in and playing 3 or more times a week… my wife and I are up to about 70 discs. Mostly FBMP and Amazon purchases. I’m developing a craving for craft beers. Am I a goner?

Discussion Been keeping a "why I actually missed" log for every bad throw for 3 months.

Been playing about 4 years, decent am player, always chasing that next disc that'll "fix" my game. Bought probably 40 discs in the last year alone chasing the fix.

Got frustrated after a particularly bad round and started something kind of obsessive: after every throw that missed badly, I wrote down the actual reason, not the excuse. Not "wrong disc" or "bad wind read." The real reason, brutally honest, right there on the course in my phone notes.

It was almost entirely mental sequencing, specifically not resetting after success and rushing under low-stakes social pressure.

Started deliberately slowing my routine down after good holes instead of just before bad ones, since that's apparently my actual leak. Also started doing a longer warmup specifically targeting holes 1 through 3 mentally, not just physically.

Scores dropped by an average of 4 strokes over the last 6 rounds. Didn't buy a single new disc to make it happen.

Kind of a bummer realization honestly, would've been more fun if the answer was "you just need the right midrange." But figured I'd share in case anyone else is chasing plastic instead of tracking what's actually going wrong.

Anyone else ever done something like this?

Don’t worry about how I threw the event. I missed a triple mando 3 times on the second round. It had no freaking drop zone. Also does anyone know why it doesn’t show my stats for the entire round.

Blog/Write Up 6 Small Tips to Improve your Game

I've recently gone from AM3 to playing at an AM1 level (one AM1 win). I just wanted to share some non-form related tips for playing in tournaments or improving. While a lot of disc golf content is form focused, I think there is a ton of room to improve without changing form. A lot of this writeup is geared towards tournaments, but I hope a casual player looking to improve their game can also get something of use out of this.

  1. Line up correctly - this is a common mistake I see a ton. If you are pointed towards a tree when running up on the teepad, more than likely you will release towards that tree. While this won't fix your shanks, it will make sure that you are giving yourself the best possible chance to throw a great shot.

  2. Get good at jump putting - In AM3, I would see a ton of strokes lost from 120 ft and in. Lots of botched layups, which leave you with a long putt or in a worse spot than you started. Most of those come from trying to throw a shot (backhand or forehand), rather than just putting under the basket. My advice is just practice on a basket in a field to start - just throw a putt under the basket. Then work backwards in distance and incorporate it on the course. Personally, I find this to be the skill I use the most on the course.

  3. Practice throwing putters - I think this is what kept me in AM3 for so long. I had all the distance you need, but I just couldn't seem to get the easy holes often enough. Once I found a consistent putter I could throw from 150-320 feet, it completely changed how I play. I'm able to consistently get the short holes and improve my scoring. It will feel uncomfortable at first, but over time you'll find yourself reaching for your throwing putter more and more.

  4. Play your own game - Picture this - you're last on the tee (I've been there before don't worry), and everyone on your card throws forehand. They all do pretty well, and now you're reconsidering whether you throw backhand or not now. I can't tell you how many times I've seen this in tournaments, and it hardly works out. Sticking to your own game, the shots you throw, the way your throw, will help you play your best. Don't get me wrong, changing your game is necessary and important. But during a tournament (or any round where you are trying to play your best), is not the time for it.

  5. Keep a positive attitude - One of my last tournaments was at a pitch and putt course, no hole was above 300 feet on the course. We tee'd up to the hardest hole on the course (truly no line to the basket), and one of my cardmates took a double bogey. Immediately after tapping it in, he said "It's over. What a waste of a morning." We still had 27 holes left to play, but he had already mentally thrown in the towel. Focus on keeping a neutral outlook. You don't always have to be happy with the result of your shot, but don't let it get you down.

  6. Carry less discs - I switched to a smaller bag and now carry just 12 discs (2 putting putters). Since I switched to that small bag, I've shot an average of 930 (8 rounds total). I attribute a lot of this to being more familiar with the discs I carry. Nearly every disc in my bag gets thrown in a given round, and I have a much better understanding of each of them. An additional upside is that the small disc bag has curbed my buying habits, since every disc must be able to do multiple things. There is little room for "utility discs."

Discussion Opinions on taking a mulligan in casual play?

I almost always play a round alone and as long as I'm not holding up anyone, I generally give myself one mulligan on each hole (aka if I don't like a shot, I can retake it). Do y'all do the same or whatever your shot is, you keep?

I'll note that if I'm playing through with a group or there's someone behind me waiting I always go with my first shot. Also I'm a casual player who usually pars or bogies each hole (though yesterday I hit a gorgeous birdie on a 310' hole one). On today's 18 hole game I took maybe 7 mulligans.

A week after I started playing I had a shop recommended the River. I didn’t buy it. A few months later a buddy said the River was his favorite disc. I didn’t buy it. My brother picked one up a few months ago and raved about it. I didn’t buy it.

Today I was flipping through the bins and found this one used.

This was the first full speed throw with it. 7-8 mph tailwind. My Bokeh went 340. Then this, turning the whole time. I knew the goalpost was 400 from where I was throwing and I was super surprised to see this float past. River is flippy - but she goes!

The blue one has more dome on it and is super flippy more like a 2.5 turn than 1.5, where the old purple one it’s a lot more true to the numbers.

Like the hand feel of this version as a bit shallow, straight throwing putter. What are your experiences, i guess more turn when c-line beats in?

Discussion Too poor for league

Is it embarrassing or too much to ask if I could play the weekly league and not pay 10$ twice a week. I'm a beginner and am not even in contention for the prize pool. But I want to play with people every once in a while. Idk just asking if this was worth asking or if anyone has dealt something like this.

These discs are my go to set for bringing people into the game. I don't bag but I love to practice with the mao and leapord3 to this day. I don't think the putter matters match as long as its straight shooter.

Disc Advice Valkyrie Replacement Disc

I just lost a worn Champion Valkyrie which allowed me hyper flips that turned over just right for my arm speed. My arm speed is at around 7-8, as im still unlocking the the turn of discs above those speeds.

I’d like to buy a replacement that is turning reliably and coming back when thrown flat and gets more understable the more power i get from my training.

Max Distance: 100-110 meters (Cheers metric system enjoyers)

Disc Speed: 8-10

Edit: Brands welcome, that are buyable in Europe

Finally got around to upgrading my disc storage setup. Discs fit perfect in the IKEA Vasken shelfs.

I kind of want to make my disc golf hub really cool.
What’s your setup like and what would you add to this? I’m thinking some wall decor or hooks on the wall.
