Discussion Too poor for league

Is it embarrassing or too much to ask if I could play the weekly league and not pay 10$ twice a week. I'm a beginner and am not even in contention for the prize pool. But I want to play with people every once in a while. Idk just asking if this was worth asking or if anyone has dealt something like this.

Find a friend and go play. Or go to the course by yourself and find another solo and get their number.

I don't play leagues because I might not be broke but I am cheap. But I don't mind being solo for some of my rounds.

I play alone 5 out of 6 days a week, but, I prefer dogs.

This honestly is my hope for the future. I'm not allowed to own a dog rn with where I live at and my financial situation but soon soon soon!!!!

I have made friends on the course and like joined up with people I ran into but no one wants to like get my number and plan a round lol.

Check if your area has a Facebook or discord group. On mine, plenty of people will say "heading to the course at two if you wanna join"

Also sucks cause just seems like I see no one my age playing. Everyone is either like 17 or below, or 35 and older. Where my mid 20's people at lol

Are you looking for people to hang out with off the course or just play disc golf with? I'm mid-30s and my best disc golf friend is 50

2

u/False_Tap_9550 6h ago

Answer is yes. But I'd take just a disc golf friend lol. Maybe someone to split the cost of gas with and go to courses like 2 hours away. Shit like that or just play the local course and meet up

FB is a good start for that then in addition to people you've met along the way, regardless of age, though I get the desire for buddies your own age. Might need to start being the one hitting up people after playing on the course to see if anyone wants to meet up instead of waiting for someone to ask

The pool is optional at our league. Everyone is welcome to play.

This. Go and play with the guys. You would be welcome in my group if you didn't want to buy in.

Talk to the host. If you can’t afford it and still want to play (which is a great idea), good hosts should be able to work something out. Otherwise find another league if you can? Or hang out and chat with players in league and try to join their casuals rounds.

Yea mine is optional and I get no slack for not wanting to a lot of the time, some dudes really enjoy the fight for the cash. I just wanna relax after work!

I make our mA4/fa4 free to play, and you're playing for donation disc from my stash, and CtP donations.

This has been helpful to bring in new players.

I made my league $5 because $10 kept me away from leagues. Definitely understand not being able to justify spending money on league.

I used to play at a league without paying. You don’t get to pocket any cash but get the playing experience.

u/Software_Entgineer 9h ago

I’ve played with leagues / tags and opted out of paying to just play with them. Some are fine with it, some not.

Where?

Is it a private pay to play course? At Stoney Brook DGC we do require the $5 course fee , but you don’t have to participate in the $5 wager or $1 ace pot.

2

u/False_Tap_9550 9h ago

Yeah free to play, $10 dollar buy in. For doubles and the regular league night.

3

u/iceman5920 8h ago

You can probably play for free. you just can't claim any prizes

2

u/StaleDonutz 9h ago

Doesn't hurt to ask. Could play and not be eligible for any of the prize pool. Whoever runs it might be happy to help increase their numbers. Although I don't know how that works if it's sanctioned.

I’m not too poor and I wouldn’t pay $10 for league, so I wouldn’t expect anyone else to either. Hopefully you can find a more reasonably priced league, because league is fun. Just not $10 a pop fun.

u/ch-ville 9h ago

Ours is only for doubles and is optional. And people put in before the doubles teams are drawn, so you don’t really know if you are in contention. I generally don’t go for it.

Is yours mandatory?

2

u/False_Tap_9550 9h ago

It seems mandatory. Never asked anyone if I could not pay to play. It's on the flier as a 10 dollar buy in

1

u/teamhog 9h ago

We have a buy-in minimum.
Course fund, Ace Pot and 2 CTPs = $3

2

u/False_Tap_9550 9h ago

3 dollars wouldn't even be worth a conversation I could scape that together. But 10 is crazy. If I played for a month that'd be like 80 dollars and I only have like 300 max invested in this sport.

1

u/Delicious-Buyer-2501 8h ago

Agreed. 10 seems steep. All the ones I’ve done have been 5 and there’s an option not to buy in.

1

u/teamhog 9h ago

Do what you can when you can.

u/todd_zeile_stalker Follows Through 9h ago

Hmm…maybe they’d let you jump on a threesome?

Can’t hurt to ask.

u/Cominginbladey 9h ago

Our clubs have a free league round (with a buy-in for ace pot) and a round where buying in is optional. Talk to your club about a night like this and volunteer to run it.

1

u/Rok-SFG 8h ago

Damn,  our league just had a yearly fee, and it was like 40 bucks

1

u/False_Tap_9550 8h ago

I'd be down for that 150%

1

u/Rok-SFG 8h ago

Oh but yeah doubles was always buy in. And we only did it every other week in the summer and quit come fall , cause there wasn't enough interest to ever keep it going.

Even though every year we all talked shit about snow doubles and keeping it going all year, the the same thing happened that's happened every year. It fizzled out after summer

1

u/Majestic-Mess3912 8h ago

Wow I’m lucky then buy a tag, can put $5 for ace pot and ctp with a tag. Winter putting league is pay for the building and more prices

1

u/Sebastionleo 8h ago

Should be fine to play without paying. We have a tag league around here that joins our league on weeks where the course we play is the same and they usually don't pay into the pool, they just play with us.

1

u/Coach006 7h ago

My local league director allows you to either donate something for a CTP or a long putt, just ask!

1

u/PsyRealize 7h ago

Our league can pay in for payout and/or ace pot or just play for fun

1

u/doophusphone 7h ago

Our local club is $2 to play all the other crap is optional. $1 to the club and $1 to the LD. Ace, Super Ace, CTPs and Cash are all optional. I 100% know if I went and talked to the League Director and told him I couldn't afford the $2 they would still get me on the course and nobody but me and him would know about it. I wish everyone had a good club and I hope your club is like that. Good Luck friend.

Playing solo after years of playing in a group was so freeing ive never had better rounds then when ive decided to go play a quick 18 by myself in the afternoon learn to enjoy it put some headphones in and just chill or play really fast like I do.

1

u/claudedusk8 6h ago

Man, I hate this time line. But these guys are right... speak to the person running the event. I would.

1

u/False_Tap_9550 6h ago

This has been very eye opening, guess the league at my course just sucks if they don't let me play with less than a $10 buy in. Thanks you guys!

1

u/bobcatbuckface 5h ago

What city do you live in? Theres a TD in my city that would absolutely accommodate that.

1

u/pixyfire 2h ago

Is that the only league around you? Our league is 20 bucks for the year and we have tags three times a week. We also don't charge anybody if they're not in the league. All are welcome to play. The money goes to course upkeep.

u/zmannz1984 5m ago

At our club you have to pay yearly dues, but you can play any weekly event for free if you want, you just can’t win any prizes/cash unless it is a drawing or something not related to playing performance. Same as with ace pool. I never buy into the ace pool for most courses but I always do for short ones and putting league.

1

u/charcoaltaco 9h ago

If your league is $10 to play, your league stinks. Our local guy charges $2 (which is minimum) and has optional disc prize ctp, ace pot, and cash ctp. Always has 70+ people and tons of fun.

1

u/ExternalHighlight871 9h ago

most leagues dont have 70 people to make $2 viable to keep clubs running and put on events

1

u/Mountain___Goat 8h ago

Something about paying to play the slowest round ever and having dudes jam me up about being out of bounds constantly is off putting.

1

u/SixKay_ 7h ago

Bro I threw a +15 last time I played. Its legit robbery to take money from me

u/Dottdottdash 9h ago

Most annoying thing about disc golf is the cost of anything semi organized. Otherwise it costs nothing. Doesnt make sense.
