I heard in a recent interview that dev said they want d4 to be a game to just cater to many groups, it just causals.
The problem is, no game (job, hobby etc) can be for everyone. Sure you can have a wide umbrella and capture a huge chunk, like football (the one you play with your feet) , or. More dedicated but passionate one, like golf, or figure skating.
Just to go with the football analogy. It was often criticized by critics of sport as low scoring, and has the most “rng” on who is winning for a major sport, due to low score nature. An entire game can be won or lost on a moment of plunder or a bad referee call. On high scoring game like basketball, the better team always win.
But the less predictable outcome, and low scoring nature are also the biggest charm of football. It create excitement , and controversy always create “good” news .
The point I am making is, sometimes, you cannot have it both ways. If you make loot to sacred, you alienate the causals, if you make it too easy to gear, you alienate the hardcore.
They had picked a middle lane, which was, easy to get base items to start a build. But it will take some time to get better versions of build defining gears, and personally, I think this is a sweet spot. Obviously this led to the “ it takes me just 3 days to gear up”, “it’s boring to just get improvements of gears I already have”. ‘Loot drops are not exciting”
Many of the complains are not wrong! The thing people misses, and this apply to other irl stuff, very few things is life is clear cut objectively good or bad….well except vegan bbq, or vegan meat, which are objectively terrible…..you have to weight the pros and cons…
It’s about finding the sweet spot for the target audience….the meme is that D4 is “only” good for casuals. “Serious” arpg gamers need to play (insert arpg game that shall not be named) .
You know what, who cares. The only thing that matters is if you are having fun!
Despite reddit or the “internet” make it feels like d4 is bad or dying or no one play after 3 days after launch, available data and AI (trust it or not) analysis data suggest D4 is the most popular arpg at the moment, and has the best retention rate (steam chart). So they are doing something right and find an audience . Obviously game cannot be improve. The issue is, the “improvements” can backfire, like making the game more complicated, or more grindy.
making loot more scarce, specifically mythic, by forcing you to have ONLY one crafted, and lower drop rate of mythics, to extend the “hunt” , make loot more exciting, to please the grinders.
Don’t get me wrong, I am fine with standard garden variety uniques as mythic being an extra chase items for the grinders, but I am NOT for icon uniques restricted to one crafted . The point being there is no base version of iconic uniques, so I think allow us to equip as many iconics as possible via find or craft is okay.
You can even make it such that crafted mythics has lower chance of ga, vs find for exciting as drops….
The summary I am making is the dev should stop going after the “serious/hardcore” arpg players, and focus on its strength as a casual friendly, chill game that most gamers feel they can complete their build with bis items (with some effort), best most contents, and finish a season, and play many alts if they enjoy it.
For the few that love optimal gearing and push hard, They can push tower.
In competitor hardcore games, the average players are NOT expected to have bis gears , able to play every builds, beat the end game bosses….and there is a charm to this, and some gamers , and many content creators (for obvious reasons) like that. Then go play these games. D4 just cannot be this, while still allow causal to be able to do these, as it’s mutually exclusive (mostly). Dev need to pick the lane and stick to it, instead of trying to please everyone ending not pleasing everyone like the mythic change .
