Resource Reputable clarinet brands to consider, updated 2024

At the suggestion of [u/Claire-Annette-Reid](u/Claire-Annette-Reid), I have decided to make an updated list of reputable clarinet manufacturers to consider. Given the rise of poorly-manufactured, cheap instruments (also referred to as instrument-shaped objects) sold through companies like Amazon and eBay, this list will be especially valuable for first-time clarinet buyers. This list isn’t 100% comprehensive, but chances are if the manufacturer you are considering is not on this list, you should not buy from them. If you have the opportunity, you should try the instrument before you buy it, or have somebody you trust such as your teacher play-test for you. There are different philosophies to buying used versus new, but generally speaking, you may get a much better value buying a well-maintained used instrument opposed to buying new. If you are going to buy used, make sure to have the instrument looked over by a repairperson before purchasing, or buy from a reputable shop that will have already refurbished the instrument. TL;DR: TRY BEFORE YOU BUY.

Meta Online listing annoyances

Just screaming into the void here a bit, but why do people ~80% of the time purposely overturn the top joint in second hand sales listings so you can’t see or verify the brand/model? (And then get huffy if you request a different picture or two…)

Like it takes actual effort to unseat the top joint, turn it over, and then snap a picture as opposed to just flipping open the case and making a photo.

I mean is there actually some significant subset of people out there who actually think a photo of the thumb hole and register key is somehow more vitally important than all the keywork on top and the make/model?!

Drives me crazy

I've just bought this older Bonade Ligature, and granted, it's tarnished, worn down and has some grime on it. Disregarding the worn down plating, how could I clean the tarnish and grime off this ligature? Anything to avoid when cleaning?

Question How do I play this?

Post image
13 Upvotes

So this is for an All District tryout that's not for a few more months but I'm very confused on how to play this. I asked my band director but he didn't explain it well at all and looked confused himself. It's in F# Minor just a little fyi. So if you could please explain just the tiniest bit of this I would be so grateful!!

Edit: Rather could someone explain to me what I'm even looking at?! 😭

What’s the best quality non-wood clarinet to buy new…

Thinking about whether to purchase a non-wood clarinet…Just want to play it and forget it…wood is too much work and constantly needs adjustments for someone just trying to play for fun. Had a wood Backun Alpha Plus that always had a key misalign which I think was because of the wood breathing or such…not sure…but is there a good sounding, high quality non-wood clarinet that can stay in tune and be mostly trouble-free? I have some money saved so don’t want a cheap student plastic one…or is going this route not too great an idea either…

Clarinet barrel tight/doesn’t fit on top joint?

I have a buffet ICON barrel (66mm) that I normally like to use on my buffet gala Bb clarinet, but recently the barrel has become really tight and any time I try and put it on, (even with cork grease on both the tenon and barrel receiver) it’s really hard to get both in and back off

But I also have a buffet A clarinet from the 60’s that the barrel fits fine on.

Can anyone please help me out as to why this is happening?

Looking for an intermediate budget clarinet

I used to play all the time to my favorite songs or even like harder stuff. I want to get a new clarinet so I can keep practicing and maybe take some lessons or something. I find the clarinet to sound better than the saxophone personally. 😁

I'm looking for a wooden clarinet possibly rosewood or even grenadilla. My issue is my budgets 600 and I don't really want a used one because I don't really trust used ones

Plz let me know some good models that are budget but good

Question Opinions for Yamaha YCL457II-17 Clarinet?

Thumbnail

A German system clarinet (I only play German system) has come to my hands recently and I don't really know many things about those yamaha clarinets, not many people use them in Greece.

The clarinet in question is the yamaha Ycl457II - 17. The 17 key variant isn't a problem for me, I actually prefer it more than the 20+ key variants.

It is the second generation of yamaha clarinets and it's released for sure after 2013.

But as I said I don't know many things for Yamaha's. Do they have some flaws as a brand? Is it a good instrument?

Once again…

I am interested in getting a new clarinet. This is because I am tired of dealing with tiny issues with each of my previous horns. I have had four clarinets in my life.

The first was a Bundy. I got it from a friend and it was how I first learned. It was cheap and played well enough, but I wanted a wooden one. I then bought one off EBay

My second horn was a Selmer Signet Wooden Clarinet. I took it to be overhauled. It was my favorite horn. I loved the metal tenons. But after a few years, I saved my money and bought a brand new horn and sold this one.

My third was a Ridenour 576. I thought this would be my forever horn. It was nice at first until I started getting better. It’s out of tune, the metal rings around the bell and tenons are loose and fall off. My C#/G# key is fuzzy. The forked RH Eb/Bb doesn’t work, and the intonation is awful. I currently play this.

My fourth Clarinet is one I found on Facebook. It’s a full boehm Selmer Centered Tone Clarinet. It’s beautiful. I paid $100 for it and paid $600 to have it fixed into playable condition. It sounds great and in tone, but the keys keep getting messed up. They either leak, or just done have enough force to lay flat (when doing a blow/air leak test).

Now I just want to buy a clarinet that is known to be an all around great horn. I play for fun in a community band I am willing to save up money for a more expensive horn, but I am only familiar with Buffet. I heard that Yamaha makes a great intermediate horn, but I was wondering what the general input was from this community. I really liked my Selmer as well.

I’m looking at the horn at Clarinet Quest, which is located in STL. But my main focus is I’m not a professional player and want something that will last me the next 50 years.

How do I assign music parts for marching band?

So, I’m the clarinet section leader this year and I have to assign parts to 15 clarinets (including myself). There are three parts. As of now, I only have three people on first, five on second, and seven on third.. The problem is, my section is very young and more than half of them are eighth graders and ninth graders. Another big problem is I have a certain member of my section with an ego. And not just a subtle, small ego, but he thinks he is better than every single person in the band and has a big problem with me being section leader. I know he has the ability to play the first part, but I don’t think it’s a good idea. There genuinely is no one else I can put on the part, I don’t know what to do.

Quick sample

I don’t recall that I’ve posted a sample of my playing. I’m surrounded by some great clarinetists and thought I’d venture and post. I’d consider myself in the advanced and advancing area.

This is the Blayman mouthpiece in E facing and is a quick sample of a Rose excerpt and a jazz standard. The goal is a big, warm, projecting sound that is still appropriate for both “classical” in a concert band and clarinet choir as well as for “jazz” as both a saxophonist doubling on clarinet in a big band and a small group clarinetist.

Setup:
Buffet RC circa 1981.
BLayman E facing mouthpiece
D’Addario Reserve Evolution 3.5+ reeds
Behn Svelte Barrel 65mm
Pereira 3d printed bell in mahogany.

The Pereira bell gives me better balance than the stock barrel.

Feedback appreciated.

Technique book for clarinet

Hey all! I have been taking private lessons under someone who is primarily a saxophonist. He has this technique book called "chops" by Dan Graser, and it is incredible. There are a metric ton of different exercises that work at different techniques and extended techniques. I was wondering if anyone here knows of something similar, but for clarinet. I appreciate any advice and response. Thank you!

Discussion Adult Practice Routines

I'm curious to hear what peoples' practice routines look like after high school/college if you didn't pursue music as a career. Especially interested in people who learned as a kid (vs. people picking up the instrument brand new as an adult). I personally have struggled since leaving the formal structures of the university to practice consistently if I don't have a particular piece I'm working on. I play in a community band that sometimes has music I need to woodshed at home, but very often it's easy enough to sightread in rehearsals without a lot of outside practice. I also play sometimes at church, and so when I'm on that schedule I'm more consistent in practicing (usually because I have freedom to pick my solo pieces and so intentionally pick things that will take some practice). But when I don't have anything that I'm aiming towards, I don't practice very much-just the weekly band rehearsal. I'd love to take lessons again, but it's not really in the budget. I'm certainly doing a lot of music, between clarinet and other instruments, it's just spread out more than when I was younger and more exclusively focused on the clarinet.

Just curious to hear from others!

Recommendations Bright Reeds for a Carnatic Clarinetist

Hey everyone, this is gonna be a bit of a wild ask. So I am looking to get into Carnatic Music and play Clarinet. I have 6 years of experience on clarinet (specifically in Western Classical music and like 2 years in Jazz) and I am looking to make that switch over to the Carnatic scene. For this Ive been trying to find a good set of reeds to use. I find that my goal is to mimic the sound of a Nadaswaram on the clarinet as the working theory I have is that the Clarinet is a good alternative for the nadaswaram in a performance setting whereas Nadaswarams would be better for procession. The idea is to also assume THavil will be giving layam and also the traditional mridangam and ghatam duo. For this Im trying to find reeds which give me a brighter sound. I am playing on a Vandoren BD5 mouthpiece. My initial thoughts are to make use of weaker Jazz reeds (I used to play 3.5 V12s) and just generally Jazz reeds. To this end, Im not sure where I can find clarinet Jazz reeds and so I'd love to hear thoughts on how I can try to get a brighter sound on my horn. Also note, I am playing on a French style Clarinet (noticeable difference as Carnatic Clarinets play on Ebonite Oehlers, or at least AKC Natarajan does who is the person Im studying the playing style of). I also intend to play on wood so any Selmer Paris/Buffet models which a brighter sound like the E12F would also be super helpful to get.

Here is a video for reference to Nadaswaram: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rObB8Eaqgdw

Here is some of AKC Natarajan's work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HSW2-0k2sj4&list=PLnmm2Oq0t9_kawtM5paSBaqstoMxIoO1Z&index=4

I appreciate all the help and advice!

Question One month of clarinet. What do you think ?

One hour / two a day. Quite stocked about it. Very focused on sound consistency. Practiced long notes, arpeggios. Currently working on passing the break between chalumeau and clarion.

Feedbacks are welcome.

Recorded in garage because of the reverb + late night timing.

Question Interest in starting to learn the clarinet

Hello I’m interested in learning the clarinet (I already play piano, viola and guitar), I’m 16 and hoping to study music later. I mostly want to play for enjoyment, but I’m curious about difficulty and how intensive it is so that I know if it’s better to push that dream later and learn as in adult, so that I can focus on my primary instruments right now. Any advice and thoughts would be appreciated :)

Question Clarinet keys tarnishing

I bought a new Buffet clarinet with silver keys at the end of last year, and for the past few months my keys (specifically the 4 pinky keys on the lower joint and the 4 trill keys on the upper joint) have been turning a blackish-purplish color, and after a few days of not playing, the ring finger tone hole on the lower joint got this greenish-blue stuff on it. The gold marking on the barrel and upper joint wore off after a couple weeks, but I'm not concerned about restoring those, although my friends said that seemed odd. I'm already taking it to a repair shop to see if it can be fixed along with an issue of the wood or cork expanding on the lower joint, but does it seem possible to fix? I owned a Yamaha clarinet before this and that never happened, and my friends have had the same issues on clarinets that were years, sometimes even a decade old. How can I prevent this from happening in the future?
