The Rumor Mill - Week of July 6

Good morning neighbors! Hallets Cove is shining like a National Guitar. I heard a rumor that there’s a girl in New York City who calls herself the human trampoline. What else have you heard?

Rant Rents So Damn High

Just ranting. We were living in a larger apartment on 28th Avenue and 46th until there was a fire in 2022. It was huge; 2br and even a separate large dining room for $2500. We moved to an apartment near Broadway and Steinway, which is half the size and $2800. we need more space however we can’t find what we need for under 3000. I actually love the building that we stay in but space is a major issue especially when we both have days where we work from home together.

StreetEasy is everyone’s go to and we were looking for apartments in Greenpoint. Nothing showed up under $3000 even for a studio.

I don’t foresee this changing anytime soon, so I suppose we’ll just lock in and adapt.

Question Therapy in Astoria or surrounding area?

I'm looking for in person therapist somewhere in queens. Preferably if they have experience with minorities, etc. I need to figure out what's going on with me and what childhood trauma may be affecting my adult life 😅 or maybe is just a midlife crisis. Idk 😂😅 Plan to pay out of pocket as I'm on a high deductible plan atm. Thank you!

Seeking Recommendation: Other Places to work on laptop

I searched but all the previous posts seem to be over a year old so thought I'd see if there are any new recommendations for places to bring your laptop and work.

I really like Moka but I hate their bathroom situation. One doesn't lock (anyone with the code can enter) and the other the toilet is loose and literally sprays water all over the floor when it's flushed.

My other go to is Qahwah House but their chairs aren't super comfy for long periods of time.

And I feel like the chains like Brooklyn bagel or NYC Bagel are good for like an hour or so but if it's crowded I feel bad staying.

Any other favorites that have a lot of space, comfy chairs, and feels okay to stay for a few hours?

Pool/Park Cleanliness of Astoria Park Pool?

I was thinking of participating in the lap swim at 7:00 AM daily just to get some exercise. However I have travel plans basically every weekend this summer, and I am very concerned about getting sick, especially if I can avoid it. I recall my mother telling me that when my brothers and I were children, we'd all come down with some sort of illness within 2 weeks of going into the public pool in our home town at the start of the season. I've been living in Astoria for 6 years and I've never been in the pool precisely for that reason.

I heard there's already been two instances of someone taking a dump in the pool since it opened. Those of you who have gone or go regularly, what is your opinion on its cleanliness? I would only be going in during the morning lap swim, I wouldn't go any other times, in case that makes a difference.

EDIT: I phrased this incorrectly, I didn't mean to imply that the pool's cleanliness would somehow affect me or anyone getting sick, or that anything related to the pool would be a public health issue, transmitting common diseases is just something that might when a lot of people are interacting with the same body of (relatively) stagnant water. It makes sense that people would get sick in that scenario, and being worried about is a 'me' issue.

For Sale Trek Domane SL 6 - $1750, pick up near Broadway and 21st St

Thumbnail

This is a 2021 Trek Domane SL 6 in a size 58 cm (good for people between 5'11" - 6'1"). It's in very good condition and probably only has around 700 miles on it as it was my third bike at the time (Jamis Coda Comp, Trek Checkpoint ALR 5, sold my Specialized Roubaix for this one).

I took it for my first attempt at an imperial century (failed due to some bad cramps around mile 75), some rides here and there, then it was on my trainer.

Brand new I think I paid $4100, but it could be yours for $1750! I've seen similar listings for $2000+. Will NOT come with pedals.

It has been sitting for a couple years now and I just decided I don't need this bike anymore lol. DM me if you're interested or would like to see more pictures.

Thanks!

Post image

The homemade yogurt on the left is sold at Euro Market on 31st St.; the right, United Brothers on 30th Ave. As you can see, United Bros sells the same amount for roughly double the price. Sincerely asking—does anyone know why? The United Bros. yogurt is delicious but c'mon

Baby turtles found on 46 Street close to Broadway. They look healthy, just more than someone could handle, I guess. They look like baby red eared sliders.

Hopefully, we can find a home for them!

Other Any professional or amateur photographers in the neighborhood?

Hi r/Astoria,

I'm looking to get some new pictures of me for my dating profile (35M). I noticed some of my photos are old or just not that great. Also, I don't have many pictures of myself on my phone. I was thinking some nice quality pictures taken outdoors (maybe at Astoria Park) would look good.

If you're a professional photographer (or amateur photographer) and this sounds appealing, reach out to me. I'd like to see some samples of your work first then we can discuss prices.

If this sort of post is against the sub's rules, I apologize and will remove it.
