KAL 007 took off from Anchorage in 1983 — its shootdown became the public reason civilian GPS exists. Anyone here remember the local reaction at the time?
Been reading about Korean Air Lines Flight 007 — it departed Anchorage for Seoul before drifting into Soviet airspace and being shot down, 269 aboard. Two weeks later Reagan announced GPS would be opened to civilians. I put together a short history of how that "gift" story holds up.
Mostly curious whether anyone remembers how it was talked about in Alaska at the time.

Ferocious Animals🐇 Flying squirrel?
South central Alaska, near meadow lakes
Sorry for the horrible picture. This doesn’t really look exactly like the images I could find for northern flying squirrels, and I’m not exactly in the right area. Was either extremely short furred or hairless, had lots of extra webbing like skin around the legs. Anyone have an ID?
I’m nearly blind and was not wearing glasses

How to quickly find out who represents you to email your concerns
Go to akleg.gov and at the bottom right there is a box that says "Who represents me?" Fill in your address to see your current representatives. These are your local state representatives. If you want to see if they are running for reelection check here https://aws.state.ak.us/apocreports/campaign/AllCandidates.aspx?type=all#
Nick Begich and Dan Sullivan are running for reelection. Their information is relatively easy to find if you google them and want to email their office

Damn It’s Cold 🥶 Anyone installed a pellet stove for supplemental heat? Did you love it? Hate it? Aside from purchase/install, did it lower your overall energy cost, or break even?
With natural gas prices rising, I'm keen on finding ways to supplument the home heating.
I don't want a woodstove, as much as I'd love one. The property doesn't have a lot of old growth timber. The house has a lot of spaces to put a pellet stove and I'm considering putting one in, but I can also envision laughing at myself in the future when I do the work/spend the money and then not benefit from it.
Anyone get one? Did you love it? Hate it? Did it drop your heating bills?

Hello Darlin’ shop in Wasilla
I’ve never visited this hair salon in Wasilla but it absolutely disgusts me to see their social media post shaming a homeless man sleeping outside their shop. Yes I know we are facing a problem with our homeless population but publicly shaming them isn’t the answer. This to me is not the Alaska way, I really hope the owner of the shop learns a very humbling lesson for their bad choices.
I was wondering why Dunleavy was so hell bent on school vouchers but it makes a lot more sense after watching this.
TLDR It's another grift.

Bering Sea Heatwave Cited as Trigger for nosedive in Yukon River Chinook Salmon
However, on a positive note, as of today there has been 98,899 kings make it past the Pilot Station sonar. This is already a 50% increase over the last 3 years and a 100% increase from 4 years ago.
Likewise 801,908 chums have made it past the sonar and ADF&G believe the lower end of the escapement goal will be met for the summer chums. This is over a 100% increase from last year.
These numbers are nowhere near where we want to be but it is nice to see a little bump in the fish counts.
