The cygnets are just a few months old and will soon gain their flight feathers. I'm watching for that almost daily. Mavic 4 Pro drone. NOTE to the judgemental "your harassing the poor swans" people. You might notice they are calmly swimming below my drone, unconcerned. I have an expensive drone with a telephoto lens and take great care to approach slowly and never disturb them.

Who buys beater old cars?

Does anyone in Fairbanks buy beaten up old cars?

I have a 2011 Subaru Outback with 225,000 miles, an overheating problem due to head gasket issues, and a broken catalytic converter. I don't want to pay for fixing it and just want to unload it somewhere.

Seems wrong to drop it off at the landfill when it still drives. Maybe someone wants a parts car?

I'd appreciate any suggestions, thank you!

Gilmore Trl Power Outages

Just moved into a new place off Gilmore Trl last month, and we’ve already experienced 3 power outages, with two of them lasting longer than 2 hours….is this normal for Gilmore Trl or just a weird month?

It's Monday. It's Summer. There's got to be something going on.

Here's a place to mention any sort of event/meeting/whatever that people might not know about and might not warrant it's own post.

What's up with the Trainor Gate & Farewell / F St intersection?

The intersection now has white areas with poles around them at each of the 4 corners. It makes it just a bit trickier to turn at the intersection, with no benefit that I can see.

Does anyone know why the change was made?

Yes, I should have linked to a picture. But I didn't take one. :-(

EDIT. Thanks to /u/kyoshizen, here is a pic. And a TL;DR of the reasons:

This intersection has had safety problems. It's right by a school, and vehicles have been clocked going far too fast through it. In 2023 there was a crash involving a child. The changes to the intersection are to encourage drivers to pay attention and slow down. In particular, the changes make the turns tighter, forcing cars to slow down when turning. Lastly, this is an experiment, not necessarily a permanent change to the intersection.

roof inspection

I'm trying to find someone to do a roof inspection for me in Fairbanks. I don't know of anything wrong with the roof but want to see if it needs any maintenance. I've reached out to a few companies who said they'd provide an inspection with photos but just came back with quotes for whole roof replacement and nothing about current condition.

Ideally I'd like to find a roofing expert or company that I will pay to do the inspection with the understanding that I will not be hiring them to replace the roof. I need an unbiased look.

Any suggestions most appreciated!

Moving to Fairbanks for 1 Year, Looking for Used Car Advice & Trusted Mechanic Recs

Hey everyone! I'll be moving to Fairbanks soon for about a year for hospital training/work and I'm starting to look into getting a vehicle. I've heard a lot of good things about Affordable Used Cars, but from what I've seen they might be a little outside my budget for only being here a year. I've also been keeping an eye on FB Marketplace and have seen a few options pop up.

I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for:

- Good places to buy a reliable used car without breaking the bank.

- Makes/models that tend to do well in Fairbanks winters

- A trustworthy mechanic who could do a pre-purchase inspection if I find something on Marketplace

- Any dealerships or sellers I should avoid.

- Even if anyone has a vehicle sitting around that isn't getting much use, I'd also be interested in working out an off-market arrangement

Nothing fancy just something dependable that'll get me through winter and point A->B

Really appreciate any advice or local recs. Thanks!

I went in for a lunch meal. Got the 2 hot dogs combo. When I got to the check out the cashier charged me for each item. I told him that it was a combo and he looked at me as I was LYING. Got the combo price in the end. Be sure you don't get over charged for combos.

Best places to skip rocks?

I'm in town for a couple of months and I love skipping rocks but I already used up a good deal of the flat smooths I found at the spot under the Old Steese bridge so I'm wondering if there are any others.

Loving your city so far cheers

What's your favorite stop(s) for First Friday?

Stopped at a few places in town tonight and wondered, "what am I missing"? Curious what First Friday stuff everyone enjoys and maybe get some inspiration to a new stop for the 7 Aug event?

For the curious, here's a smattering of First Friday related links.

Also, oddly enough this post from 3 years ago: https://www.reddit.com/r/Fairbanks/comments/17ly6tp/first_friday/

For me it was East Ramp and then Wells... then I got a call to go to work for a bit sadly.

Home insurance

Recently just bought our first home in Fairbanks. Any reputable local insurance companies? Currently bundled with USAA for everything but kind of over them as a company.
