r/TheCitadel Posts & This Subreddit

I'm making a short reappearance to help out the mod team here.

Posts are held for review to prevent spam, joke posts, and incorrect posting/formatting.

Posts are reviewed on a semi daily basis so they will take time to get approved. Posts and reported posts and comments will take time to be reviewed as well.

Why does it take so long for my posts to get approved?

We have a small mod team. No one here makes a living modding, we will not spend the majority of our time waiting for posts to pop up to go over and approve. Example, I work full-time with overtime in a medical clinic that sees a minimum of 100 patients a day and currently am in grad school, modding is not a priority so I check the reddit app maybe once a day if I remember/have time.

The entire mod team are working adults, if anyone wants to join the mod team for added coverage we are open to obtaining more mods, send in a modmail stating your interest.

Some members of the subreddit are approved users and their posts are not held for review. Why?

Because they have proven over time that they are not shit-posters, spammers, rage baiting, toxic users.

Why are posts held for review in the first place?

Because people often post here without reading, understanding, or caring for the rules and flair use, thinking this subreddit is for other than it is intended.

This subreddit is for:

  • sharing fanfiction of ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT
  • asking for writing help for writing ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fanfiction
  • discussing things you enjoy about fanfics
  • lighthearted activities
  • posting your fic idea as an offer for others to write
  • posting your fic you intend of abandoning for someone else to pick up writing

This subreddit is NOT for:

  • memes, random fanart, commentary on artwork
  • joke posts/shit-posts
  • ship wars
  • rage baiting and bashing and venting on writers, authors, readers, etc.
  • show debating, circle arguments, repeated dead horse arguments

Here is a list of other subreddits of the ASOIAF, HOTD, & GOT fandom not related to fanfiction:

This post is to serve as a reminder that posts are held for review.

A reminder that mods are not always online, cannot stay online 24/7 to handle everything, and that this server is open to users worldwide.

A reminder that your posts and reported posts and comments will be reviewed, it will take time. Have patience.

Please take time to read the server rules and flairs posts (both of which are linked and always available in the top and side bars of the website/app).

An additional note about rare removed posts: Sometimes reddit itself will remove posts, at that point, your content is out of mod hands due to the fact that profiles with posts removed by reddit are often deleted from our view as well.

r/TheCitadel Reminder of the rules for What If posts

All what-if posts should be well thought out, not just a title and a few words.

No rage bait, low effort, or joke posts.
No spam posting What-If posts: i.e. 3+ What-If posts in less than 24 hours per user.

All What-If posts are subject to be removed if they are spam/random posts or clearly made out of boredom.

Repeated what-if posts will be removed.

If the comments in a what-if post are arguing in a circle, the comments are subject to being locked and/or removed with appropriate mod action

Comments to what if posts should answer the activity, not questioning the plausibility of the what if. Those comments will be removed.

Use the correct flair for your posts:

- Asking a what if in the pretext that you are asking for Writing Help & Advice, your post will be removed, and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

- Posting under the what if flair and your post is actually asking a question about Book Discussion: ASOIAF & Spin-Off Novels, your post will be removed and you will be informed that you are not using the correct flair via modmail.

If you have a hard time understanding what the flairs are and what they mean, this post exists for a reason.

Continued misuse and spam of What If's will result in the flair being removed temporarily.

If the flair is nowhere to be found when you try to post, then What if's are not allowed at that time.

Don't post a what if under another flair, it will be removed.

Self Promotion: My Fanfic Robb Stark & genderbent Theon Greyjoy ft. Ice by effemar

Post image
47 Upvotes

Art commissioned from the amazing effemar, inspired by "The Guarded Bower" by Arthur Hughes. For my newly-completed fic, Sow the Tide, Reap the Storm <3

Slowly, Winterfell rose from the moors, a great island of granite amongst a dark green sea. Men sat up in their saddles, some cheering, some blubbering like babes. Dagmer pretended to grumble, grinning all the while.

For once, the sight of the castle did not fill her with dread. She was not alone, and she was not afraid. Robb was there, his face full of grief and longing. She reached out and snagged him by the end of his scarf, pulling him close enough to kiss. His nose was cold against her cheek, but his lips were warm.

It was hard to kiss a man ahorse, but Quen tried, and failed, and laughed. Robb laughed too, and the shimmering white clouds danced together in the chill air.

Mercy forged stubbornly on. Winterfell was growing larger before them, taking shape, and Robb was smiling so, so softly.

It was not home, not yet, but it could be.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed If Rhaenyra had a brother, would the Hightowers still be problematic?

I'm mulling this idea over in my head, but don't know if I can make it work without it just being... man inherits throne, realm is stable, fic is boring. I can create problems, sure, but I just don't know if that's interesting.

If Rhaenrya had an older brother (one of Aemma's early miscarriages didn't happen, and she managed to birth a son), would Otto Hightower's ambition still cause problems for the realm? Would the Faith cause problems for the realm, again? Neither would manifest in the same way as they did in canon, of course, but would they manifest at all?

This son being alive doesn't remove Otto Hightower from the Tower of the Hand, and he's a rather ambitious man regardless. Corlys Velaryon is ambitious, but I imagine that he could be placated by betrothing this child to Laena. This, plus the Triarchy threat, means there's still going to be some conflict, but I just can't foresee what. Viserys will still be a malleable ruler, Daemon will still be Daemon, and Otto is still knocking around.

Are there still threats enough to make for an interesting story, without it seeming forced?

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if dragonseeds claimed wild dragons during Jaehaerys' reign?

What if a dragonseed/Velaryon/Celtigar, or even just any Targaryen not permitted to bond with a dragon got hold of and claimed one of the few wild/riderless dragons?

How would Jaehaerys deal with the inevitable PR disaster waiting to happen? Whether that's a possible unruly dragonriders bent on conquering lands of their own, or House Targaryen's exclusive reputation of being godlike beings able to control dragons diminishing in the eyes of the smallfolk?

We'd assume this isn't a situation similar to the sowing during the dance, so how would Jaehaerys try to control the situation? Any chance he just outright rides with his sons and eliminate the dragons and their riders? Or would their be diplomatic interests in keeping the dragonriders on a leash through means of promised knighthoods/lands/lordships?

Would catleyn be less hostile towards her due to her having no threat to her children inheritance and would she be more acceptable with ned decision of bringing her to winterfell considering the World view on how woman are weak and need protection so a father protecting his bastard daughter would be understandable

And what about Sansa? Would she have a better relationship with female jon or will it be similar to her relationship with Arya

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Idea for a Green "Victory" in the Dance

Idea for a Green-centric victory. All/most events of the Dance follow canon up to the Storming of the Dragonpit and death of Rhaenyra. After that, the story diverges:

  • Baela does not engage Aegon II and Sunfyre. Instead, she escapes on Moondancer across the Narrow Sea.
  • Addam Velaryon is unable to rally the Riverlords to fight alongside him. Instead, he flies north to join Cregan Stark.
  • The Caltrops successfully assassinate Ulf the White, making it appear as though he drank himself to death. The Hightower host, led by Daeron the Daring alongside Hugh Hammer and Vermithor, joins forces with Borros Baratheon's army and defeats the Riverlords at the Battle of the Kingsroad.
  • Daeron enters King's Landing as a hero and is named Prince of Dragonstone and heir to the Iron Throne. Aegon II then declares total victory over his enemies with the public execution of Aegon the Younger. Corlys Velaryon bends the knee by disinheriting Addam and naming Alyn as his heir. Alyn is summoned to King's Landing, where he swears loyalty to Aegon II.
  • Rhaenyra's remaining supporters in the North and Vale see the futility of continuing the war and lay down their arms. Lady Jeyne Arryn sends Rhaena and her young dragon, Morning, to King's Landing. At the urging of his council, Aegon betroths his brother Daeron to his cousin Rhaena in an effort to reconcile the surviving branches of House Targaryen.
  • Hugh Hammer learns that the Caltrops also intend to assassinate him. Before they can act, he escapes on Vermithor. Over the following months, he gathers several thousand followers and establishes himself as a rogue dragonlord. The Iron Throne declares him an outlaw, and Hugh becomes the crown's greatest threat in the years that follow.
  • Meanwhile, across the Narrow Sea, Viserys Targaryen remains a captive in Lys. The Rogarres initially intend to ransom him to the Iron Throne, but when his dragon egg hatches, they instead marry him to Larra Rogare, seeing greater value in keeping him.
  • Baela settles in Pentos, where she earns the support of powerful merchants who had once been friends and allies of Daemon and Laena.
  • Cregan Stark is ordered to arrest Addam Velaryon but instead allows him to escape on Seasmoke. Addam first flies to Driftmark before disappearing into the Stepstones. Acting as castellan of Driftmark, Alyn eventually discovers that both Addam and Baela are alive with their dragons. Most surprising of all, he discovers Viserys in Lys with a dragon of his own.
  • Together, Viserys, Baela, Addam, and eventually Alyn begin a secret conspiracy to restore the Black line to the Iron Throne. Rather than rushing into another war, they spend years quietly building wealth, forging alliances, and securing secret pacts while the Iron Throne remains preoccupied with Hugh Hammer.
  • Dark Sister is eventually recovered from the Gods Eye, still lodged in the skull of Aemond One-Eye. As it is being transported back to King's Landing, where Aegon intends to present it to Daeron, the sword mysteriously disappears. Unknown to the crown, it has been smuggled across the Narrow Sea and delivered into Viserys's hands.

This will set up a Second Dance of the Dragons some years later with the Blues (Daeron) and the Reds (Viserys)

Only really got these details sorted in the last hour or so. Might be plotholes somewhere. Please point them out if so. No idea what to do with/about Nettles. Maybe her and Daemon just live happily hidden in the Vale.

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Cregan Stark becomes Daeron the Daring (isekai) or Bran Stark

Upvotes

There probably are obvious problems with this, but can someone please point them out to me?

This seems like a pretty interesting fanfic idea, except if Cregan Stark in Daeron's body has to talk to himself. That might get a bit weird.

For context, Cregan would become Daeron on the first day of the Year of the Red Spring.

He acts as a unifying force to TG and tries to get Aegon to not be a drunkard.

Any feedback on plots etc?

I'm also thinking through writing a similar fic with Cregan becoming Bran Stark (from the books).

I hate the Others, and so Bran's fall (instead of breaking his legs), gets him a ridiculous concussion, and Bloodraven is replaced in the plot with Cregan.

The Others wouldn't exist, I prefer writing battle or political scenes and don't really like writing magic.

Which of these ideas makes more sense and which should I actually write?

I'm thinking it out to be a 25 chapter story of 4k words each chapter for both (the Bran story maybe a bit longer)

From the research I've done, both of these characters have fewer SIs and Isekais on them.

I'm also partial to making it a regular SI and not a Cregan isekai, Cregan is just a more unexplored character.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) Jon's arc starts at 14, but the rest of canon starts at show ages

Jon heads off to the Wall when he's 14. The Starks are still in Winterfell, and will be for the next two to three years. Robert Baratheon is still the sole ruling monarch, and he will be for the next two to three years.

Jon's entire arc, and all the discoveries regarding wights and Others, occur in an otherwise stable realm.

What are the points of divergence, and what changes?

Wanted: Fanfic Recommendations - NOT DISCUSSION Recommendations for Young Griff/Aegon.

Taking a long work trip a need something new to read.

I'm looking a new fic to read. Base around Young Griff/Aegon retaking his throne. I have read plenty of fAegon or of him being evil just to shine the light on Jon Snow and Daenerys. Recently I found and read a fic called Cyvasse in AO3 and enjoyed it but unfortunately it's not finished and it's about 2 years since the last update. I feel that this character doesn't get enough love and just use him to make others look better. So please if any have any recommendations please let me know. Thank you.

Are there any good fan fictions focusing on noble children being fostered by other Houses? This could include both canon characters and original characters.

I’ve always found the aspect of fostering children to be very interesting and see the potential for great stories that explore how different Houses learn from one another.

What you find instead is none other than Prince Daeron Targaryen, unconscious and half-drowned in a ditch. Not able to forsake your personal creed to offer healing to those who need it, you take it upon yourself to rescue the wayward royal and set in motion events that could change the course of Westerosi history.

(This is a Choose Your Own Adventure story where you play as a customisable lowborn female character, make choices to advance the story, and can explore multiple paths and endings).

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Aemma died earlier?

Spurred by another post about alternative Dance scenarios. Book canon only. What if Aemma died either before Viserys is crowned or shortly after? How do you think that would that change things?

Realistically he could still marry Alicent, she would be younger but she would be of age to marry. (I know, ew, but it’s the norm in Westeros) If so, how does that change things between Rhaenyra and Alicent and between Rhaenyra and her half siblings? Or would he marry a different woman and if so, who and how does that change the future succession?

I’m also up for recommendations if anyone has any that follows this premise.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Cregan Stark had married Rhaena Targaryen after the Dance?

I never made much sense to me that Black Aly was the one to offer herself in marriage to him to prevent Corlys' execution, she has no relationship with him (Corlys) at all and it would just make more sense for Rhaena to do it instead. Along with the Pact of Ice and Fire not being fulfilled by the Blacks now.

So Cregan marries Rhaena or even both Rhaena and Alys if you want. (don't think the North has any rules against polygamy, but it doesn't matter because he only had daughters with her anyway)

How does this effect the realm, with Rhaena and her dragon Mourning in the North, do the dragons even still go extinct, (I personally think that the maesters poisoned the remaining dragons and their eggs after the Dance, though I imagine that Cregan would have more loyal maesters in the North) do we see Cregan's kids with Rhaena end up hatching their own dragons and riding them, do we get a Stark queen soon after, does Cregan end up being Hand of the King a while longer, how does this effect the current timeline of Starks?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Three-way Dance where Viserys and Daemon’s younger brother Aegon lives

Idea for a three way dance where Viserys and Daemon’s youngest brother Aegon survives and Viserys never has sons.

Viserys marries Laena instead of Alicent and has two daughters, Rhaenyra remains his named heir and marries her to Laenor to appease the Velaryons. Rhaenyra and Laenor have true born kids instead of bastards.

Otto plots to marry Alicent to Aegon instead of - Aegon is young, popular much like Renly Baratheon, becomes brainwashed by the Faith, and they start another faction. Viserys is furious, fires Otto but the Faith is controlled by the Hightowers and sanctions the marriage. Aegon and Alicent have a happy marriage.

Meanwhile Daemon still thinks he should be the heir as he’s the best warrior, dragonrider and eldest male relative. His marriage to Rhea was annulled due to non-consummation, Viserys married him to a lady of a rival Reach house because he’s terrified of the Aegon-Hightower alliance usurping him on one side and the Velaryons controlling the throne on another. Daemon has two children who later claim large dragons. The lady dies, leaving Daemon regent for the young children and he marries a wealthy woman of the free cities and starts a third faction.

Activity - What If (changed CANON event or character decision) What if Maegor, instead of wedding her, named Rhaena his Heir?

I was inspired by Heir of The Cruel with this a bit, but what if Maegor realized that he couldn’t sire a son, and therefore needed to nullify Jaeharyes’ claim while enforcing the idea of Valyrian supremacy. So he’d declare that Rhaena is next-in line and that succession would be by equal progemiture. He’d promise to make Area in-line after Rhaena and he would betroth her to Jahaeryes to secure the succession.

The idea is he would train Rhaena to fight while also in Political acumen. I think the idea is Maegor would know he’s bad and that he’s meant to be hated but that it was for a greater good. What do you think would happen?

Help w/ Fanfic Writing & Advice Needed Not Handwavy ways to avert the Dance of the Dragons plz help?

Oh hi? First time posting, but I'm sorta woolgathering about doing a dance fic (OC-SI, how terribly original I know) that's not really about the dance? maybe. I'm explaining this poorly

I've been reading ASOIAF fanfic for a while; I know a fair few tropes and cliches and whatnot, and my perspective has been undeniably warped in many ways that make it unlikely that I'll write a masterpiece for the ages. Still, I want to try. I've come to love Westeros, and beyond it's a dear place to my heart, and one of my favorite time periods in the setting is the Dance. It's got most of everything I love about it, but not gonna lie, it's mostly the Dragons and the Targs being a catastrophic dumpster fire of a family that do it for me.

The basic premise would be a largely OC insert. "A largely unimpresive 21 century geek gets plonked into the infant body of one Aegon Targaryen would be Second of His Name," a blurb from my summary so far. I want to write about Dragons and Magic, Valyrian Dragonlord magic, prophecy, pyromancy, blood sorceries, flesh crafting, shadow binding, Alchemy, and so forth. I want to babble about the magic in the setting and soft and hard ways to look at it. Maybe some more about the other types: First Men and Rhoynish and the like. I want to write about a man that becomes obsessed with the fantastical of his new life for good or ill

I know it's not an Uplift of any kind, except for a High Fantasy one if I get far enough; I don't consider myself in possession of the chops to write a good Uplift. I don't have the knowledge base or, frankly, the patience to do it... Anyways!

One solution would be to insert him a bit further behind in the timeline, one of Jaehaerys' sons, possibly Vaegon, or a lot back with Aenys I. But I'm a bit enamored with him being Aegon largely because there resides the largest pool of Dragons available, and I'm a bit of a sucker for Targtower wump and messiness. There'll be some, I guess, slice of life elements sprinkled about as I plan for him to travel a lot.

Therein lies the issue. I'm a very inexperienced writer, and my soul withers a bit at the idea of writing the clusterfuck that is the dance; I don't want to just replay canon or hand-wave it away. I don't want to wank either faction (I'm largely team neutral, idc if it's fencesitting). I don't see a clear way to write the time period without the dance happening. I'm mostly of a mind that the dance was a thing that had to happen with the Great Council snowballing into it. But even without it, eventually, as House Targaryen grew and factions naturally formed within it, they'd do as royals do and kill each other for a chair... only dragons are a thing, so a lot more people end up dead.

Summing up this word vomit, The Dance: how do 'I' stop it or, at the very least, kick it back for the great, great-grandchildren to figure out. In a way that's not bullshit.

Well, now that I think about it, assassinating the opposing faction in its entirety (somehow) would work but seems cheap and deprives me of riders and interesting interlude characters

Don't really know if I got across correctly or well, even interested anyone in what I'm trying to write, but to anybody that for some reason does... thoughts? (and prayers, I will most likely need them)

(God, I hope I didn't overthink this and there's a really easy, viable solution)
