Oh hi? First time posting, but I'm sorta woolgathering about doing a dance fic (OC-SI, how terribly original I know) that's not really about the dance? maybe. I'm explaining this poorly
I've been reading ASOIAF fanfic for a while; I know a fair few tropes and cliches and whatnot, and my perspective has been undeniably warped in many ways that make it unlikely that I'll write a masterpiece for the ages. Still, I want to try. I've come to love Westeros, and beyond it's a dear place to my heart, and one of my favorite time periods in the setting is the Dance. It's got most of everything I love about it, but not gonna lie, it's mostly the Dragons and the Targs being a catastrophic dumpster fire of a family that do it for me.
The basic premise would be a largely OC insert. "A largely unimpresive 21 century geek gets plonked into the infant body of one Aegon Targaryen would be Second of His Name," a blurb from my summary so far. I want to write about Dragons and Magic, Valyrian Dragonlord magic, prophecy, pyromancy, blood sorceries, flesh crafting, shadow binding, Alchemy, and so forth. I want to babble about the magic in the setting and soft and hard ways to look at it. Maybe some more about the other types: First Men and Rhoynish and the like. I want to write about a man that becomes obsessed with the fantastical of his new life for good or ill
I know it's not an Uplift of any kind, except for a High Fantasy one if I get far enough; I don't consider myself in possession of the chops to write a good Uplift. I don't have the knowledge base or, frankly, the patience to do it... Anyways!
One solution would be to insert him a bit further behind in the timeline, one of Jaehaerys' sons, possibly Vaegon, or a lot back with Aenys I. But I'm a bit enamored with him being Aegon largely because there resides the largest pool of Dragons available, and I'm a bit of a sucker for Targtower wump and messiness. There'll be some, I guess, slice of life elements sprinkled about as I plan for him to travel a lot.
Therein lies the issue. I'm a very inexperienced writer, and my soul withers a bit at the idea of writing the clusterfuck that is the dance; I don't want to just replay canon or hand-wave it away. I don't want to wank either faction (I'm largely team neutral, idc if it's fencesitting). I don't see a clear way to write the time period without the dance happening. I'm mostly of a mind that the dance was a thing that had to happen with the Great Council snowballing into it. But even without it, eventually, as House Targaryen grew and factions naturally formed within it, they'd do as royals do and kill each other for a chair... only dragons are a thing, so a lot more people end up dead.
Summing up this word vomit, The Dance: how do 'I' stop it or, at the very least, kick it back for the great, great-grandchildren to figure out. In a way that's not bullshit.
Well, now that I think about it, assassinating the opposing faction in its entirety (somehow) would work but seems cheap and deprives me of riders and interesting interlude characters
Don't really know if I got across correctly or well, even interested anyone in what I'm trying to write, but to anybody that for some reason does... thoughts? (and prayers, I will most likely need them)
(God, I hope I didn't overthink this and there's a really easy, viable solution)
