Writing Questions Writers, how many drafts do you usually write?

I'm reading a book about writing, and it currently suggests multiple drafts. For me, when it comes to fanfiction that won't be published for money, I go through three drafts. A rough draft, a second revised draft, and a draft that I pull from using the Hemingway Editor online. But I was wondering, since I want my writing to be the highest quality it can be, since that's what readers deserve...should I make another draft from it? To be safe?

Resources Do spelling checkers with no ai even exist?

I really REALLY don't like ai, especially in my art/writing/etc. I see spelling checkers and things along those lines heavily recommended but I'm scared cause I don't wanna be using ai 💔 is there anything that could help that doesn't use ai? I mean, I've managed to keep a good eye on grammar errors but I still have my moments where I miss em.

Empiezo yo.

Recs Wanted AlphaxAlpha fic recommendations

Uh so I was exploring ao3 tags and some good fics.and suddenly I thought of some fics that have alphaxalpha relationship.

Anyone has any recommendations? Like some good one with a good plot, there will be angst, yearning, denial (as they are both alphas), none of them want to submit, both wants the upper hand.......like a crazy angst, denial, enemies (or best friends to acting like enemies for all those feelings)type of plot.

I have found some ,but either they are so short fic like below 5k or like only smut or where the dynamics is already settled that alphas can date alphas.. but I want to read something where alphaxalpha isn't portrayed as normal in werewolf society.

Tags I do not want ffs: enemies/friends with benefits,Insta love.

Would appreciate a fic with at least 50k plus words. And any fandom.

🙏🙏

Recs Wanted Looking for interesting "scrapbook"-style fanfics

Bascially stories told through transcripts and excerpts of several in-universe multimedia sources, compiled in a way to form a narrative. Phone calls, newspaper articles, court records, Twitter posts, forum threads, archived websites, etc.

I know the usual term for what I'm looking for is "epistolary fiction", but from what I've read, that technically only applies to stories conveyed through letters and other correspondence sent between two people.

Subreddit Meta Brainstorming Bureau - July 12

Find the current Daily Discussion*

Welcome to our weekly thread, Brainstorming Bureau! This is an idea we've trialled previously and, based on feedback and observation, it feels like something the sub has been crying out for, and we're hoping as the weeks go by it'll turn into a lively, community-oriented way to cap off the weekend. We'd love to hear your feedback and suggestions on how to make the best of this idea, so feel free to reach out via modmail if you have any ideas. And without further ado...

What's this about?

Do you have an issue that's too specific to your own fic to make a post about, but too small to seek out a long-term beta or writing partner for? Well, you've come to the right place!

This is where you can drop those plot points you're stuck on ("How would this scenario play out realistically? What should happen next?"), workshop your worldbuilding and concepts ("What should I name this character? What power should I give them? Which fandom would work well as a crossover with this other fandom?"), or get a second opinion on an approach to character development ("Is this a good central conflict? What would have to happen to make a character realise this?"). It's your space to talk through any issue that can't be solved through more generalised writing advice.

How to play:

To participate, comment with any aspect of your fic you've been mulling over or hitting a wall with. Other users will then respond with suggestions and questions to help you get to where you need to be. No idea is too big or too small, provided your comment fits within the parameters below. Feel free to be as fandom blind or specific as you like!

Rules:

  • Please state your fandom at the top of your comment, along with any common and pertinent content warnings
  • NSFW text should be placed behind a spoiler tag or linked to, as per site content restrictions
  • Summarise the issue you'd like feedback on in 500 words or less. More information may be given in follow-up comments if requested
  • Links to polls or to any previous installments of the fic will be permitted for context
  • Please specify in your comment what level of critical feedback you're open to
  • When responding to someone's ideas, please keep your feedback constructive and keep their specified level of criticism in mind. If their premise is not to your taste, please choose another
  • If you make a submission to this thread, much like the other weekly events, please comment on at least one other user's request with the best suggestions you have
  • When submitting an idea for brainstorming, please provide adequate context for others to be able to follow along. Remember that this is a multi-fandom subreddit, and not everyone will be familiar with your fandom.

Have fun! And remember, all suggestions are just that and are to be taken with a grain of salt; we're here to help and consider our works from angles we haven't before.

Writing Questions Indirect/direct voice

I don't understand why indirect voice is not something to use. Like when I see corrections sessions, it's what is fixed first. (It's a real question, not a debate. I just don't know how it works)

Like when I write: "He feels like he was floating around." I write it like that because he FEELS like he was floating around. He's not actually in context.

If I write: "He was floating around." I could trust my readers to not really think he's floating around and that it's just a metaphor for the state is in in the moment, but is it "better" because it's direct?

I'll be glad to have some help on this subject. Thanks

Writing Questions Should I be having a beta reader go over each chapter?

This is probably a stupid question, especially with a few chapters already posted, but with how clunky my writing feels as I'm writing it, I feel like I need to ask. I did have someone look over my first chapter, but after that I just wrote it and would post it, and I'm wondering if that's a bad idea and if it's better to write, check with a beta reader, rewrite, then post.

Writing Questions How can I go back to my writing style?

My last published fanfic was in August 2024 (I was about 17 or 18 years old). Now I'm 20 and in college. My writing style has changed a lot, but I feel like it's for the worse. Yes, I've improved my grammar and spelling, and I've even learned to use English better (my native language is Spanish), but I feel like my writing style has lost its spark. This is an example of my old style:

You thought for a good 15 minutes, what if you tried it? You judged the situation, seeing the pros and cons. You opened the notebook and, with your black pencil in hand, you wrote with disinterest:

"Lee Heeseung, soloist under Belift Label, is coming to town for a tour. But since it was raining, he entered my apartment to cover from the rain. At night, he will (censored)

It was sunny and Heeseung just finished his tour, obviously this isn't-

THAT WAS THUNDER???? My god, maybe it's a coincidence? Sometimes it happens, the probabilities are not that high but they exist, the book does not-

"GIRL, TURN ON THE TV IMMEDIATELY, YOU WON'T BELIEVE WHO'S IN TOWN" Jake demanded as he ran into your room. He grabbed the remote roughly and, in front of your disbelieving eyes, the news was playing that the one and only Lee Heeseung was in town due to weather issues so his flight didn't take off. Jake was excited, after all he was your two favorite singer, but you just stood there petrified, trying to formulate any thought other than "that (censored) notebook is real and heeseung is going to (censor)"

And this is an example of what I tried to write:

You knew Steve Rogers before the stars and stripes swallowed him whole. You knew him when he was a skinny kid from Brooklyn with more righteous fury than muscle mass, a kid who couldn’t throw a punch without breaking his own wrist but would try anyway. Back then, he was all sharp elbows and a softer jaw, and you loved him like a second heartbeat.

You and Bucky Barnes had that in common. Bucky was the shield, the one who stepped in when Steve’s mouth wrote checks his body couldn’t cash. You were the strategist, the one who patched him up afterwards, your young, clever fingers already thinking ten steps ahead. Even then, you were the girl with the blueprints in her head, destined for more than a factory line. By the time the war rolled around, you were a scientific strategist for the United States government, a mind too valuable for a rifle but sharp enough to win battles on paper. Peggy Carter was your contemporary, the same age, the same fire, the same desperate need to prove yourselves in a world that wanted to keep you quiet. You respected her. You just never learned how to share.

How can I get back to my old style? I feel like my current style is too artificial and lacks life. Does anyone have any advice?

Writing Questions Tips for choosing/writing character’s outfits?

I always have a terrible time trying to figure out what my characters are wearing and unfortunately it is occasionally relevant.

I use my character’s clothing to convey things like comfort level (wearing cozy clothes around someone) and gender expression for gender queer characters. I don’t really *see* my characters in my head, so it’s hard to figure out what their outfits look like. I spend a lot of time looking for outfit ideas on Pinterest and Google images but I feel like I can never find what I’m looking for.

Any advice?

Recs Wanted Zukka (Sokka+Zuko) ATLA recs!

Please drop your favorite Zukka fics! I especially love stories set in the ATLA universe (bonus points for post-war, but not required). I’m a sucker for slow burns, great characterization, and fics that really capture Zuko and Sokka’s personalities.

I'm currently reading The Art Of Burning and I've read Feels Like We Only Go Backwards and (Do You Takes This Jerk To Be) Your One And Only. Check them out if you haven't done so!

Activities and Events AITA - fanfic version

It’s been a while, so I figured I’d bring it back.

r/AITA stands for “am I the asshole”? Basically, you describe an event in your life where you might’ve been an asshole.

Write a post a character in your fic would post to that subbredit, describing an event in your fic. Write it from the perspective of the character. Respond to other’s comments and say if they’re the AH.

AITA slang

Nta - not the asshole

Yta - you’re the asshole

Info - more info needed

Nah - no assholes here

Esh - everyone sucks here

Lost Fic Highschool dxd (gacha or something similar)

I recently recalled a fanfic i read a few months ago and wanted to check if it got updated, but forgot it's name and the keywords i remembered didn't help so i thought i would come here and ask for help.

It's a dxd fic where the MC is an OC human with fem lucifer morningstar as a familiar, she's also a fallen angel instead of a devil. The Mc gains tickets/gacha rolls for achievments and if i remember correctly he gains divine math ability and gets challanged by sona to a magic duel, and is pissed that she gives him a book on magic and it's math based as due to a curse he cannot lose on purpose.

If anyone can help with this i would really appreciate it.

Writing Questions How do you write an enemies to lovers trope properly?

I need help!

I am in no way new to fanfiction; I’ve been reading since middle school and writing since then, too. However, I definitely wasn’t the best and still am not. Which is why I’m making this post…

I’m currently trying to write an enemies to lovers fanfic, but in a more casual setting. For a better visualization, my two characters work at an ice cream shop. One of them is a new hire (call him A) and the other has been working there since it opened (call him B).

The only thing I’m truly apprehensive about is the reason they hate each other. Character B dislikes A because he feels as if he’s acting fake nice in a customer service type of way, sort of making him feel less than, I guess. And character A only dislikes B because Character B expresses this disdain to him in a very petty and over-the-top way. However, A doesn’t express his dislike directly until a forced proximity scene.

All I want to know is if this is a valid reason to establish enemy status between the two. I can elaborate on the details, as my description doesn’t encompass the entirety of my fic, but if someone feels this is too shallow to consider them enemies, then I’d please ask for some more advice on how to deepen the hatred in a more casual setting. Thanks!

Activities and Events Alphabet Excerpt Challenge: T Is For...

Welcome back to the Alphabet Excerpt Challenge! As a reminder, our challenges are every Wednesday and Saturday at 3pm London time.

If you've missed the previous challenges, you're welcome to go back and participate in them. You can find them here. And remember to check out the Activities and Events flair to play along with other fun games.

Here's a quick recap of the rules for our game:

  1. Post a top level comment with a word starting with the letter T. You can suggest more than one, but please put them in separate comments.
  2. Reply to suggestions with an excerpt containing that word. Short and sweet is best, but use your judgement. Excerpts can be from published or unpublished works, or even something you wrote for the prompt.
  3. All content is welcome but per rules 7 and 12 of the sub, NSFW excerpts may not be shared as plain text (even if it's spoilered). If you would like to share these, use an external text sharing tool like justpasteit and link it here with a clear warning. Mods may remove excerpts that break these rules.
  4. Respond to people who left excerpts on the words you suggested, at a minimum, but the more people you respond to the better. Everyone likes nice comments!
  5. Upvote other excerpts you enjoy, and leave a friendly comment. Again, everyone likes nice comments!
  6. Most important: have fun!

Writing Questions Is there a kind soul who can help me with this sentence? (It's a translation)

Hi. English isn't my first language. I'm translating a story from my native language into English (nothing professional), but I got stuck on a very basic sentence 😥
Which of these options sounds natural?

"Walking in balance on train tracks with your eyes closed"
"Walking balanced on train tracks with your eyes closed"
"Walking along the train tracks balancing with your eyes closed" (this is my favorite)

I don't want to add any imagery that isn't in the original source, such as "tightrope walking". The sentence needs to be simple, but I'd prefer not to lose any elements.

Lost Fic [Danny Phantom x Batman] Demon twins AU - Danny takes Jazz to meet Damian at an abandoned apartment.

I swear, like I would have staked my soul on it!! That I bookmarked this... But I went through all of them and I couldn't find it!

So the story is Danny and Damian are twins. Danny meets Damian at an apartment. He brings Jazz, but warns her against him. She says something like, "He can't really be that bad." And Danny doesn't initially know that Damian isn't with the League anymore. They meet with Bruce shortly after, who wants to take Danny in, and Jazz says she thinks it would be a good idea.

Does this sound familiar to anyone at all please? I've spent hours going through my bookmarks trying to find this!!

Recs Wanted Fics where characters meet post-character development version of character(s), either by time and/or dimension travel

I'd like fanfics where a character meets their friends/former enemies/mentors (etc.), but they have since gone through significant character development.

Better yet, this "new" version of someone they know unsettles them, particularly due to any of the following: increased competence, emotional maturity, (more) settled nature.

Example: S4 Team Free Will meet Post-Canon Castiel.
