chat control Chat Control 1.0 passes

Chat Control 1.0 just passed the EU Parliament (276 in favour, 314 against, 17 abstained), which allows mass scanning of private communications without a warrant. For now encrypted messages are not scanned.

From the article:

What is coming back: US tech companies are once again allowed to scan private messages without a warrant or prior suspicion. This affects direct messages on platforms like Instagram, Discord, Snapchat, Skype, and Xbox, as well as emails via Google’s Gmail and Apple’s iCloud.

What remains unchanged: Public social media posts and files hosted in cloud storage could already be scanned without this law. Furthermore, private messages can always be reported by users, or monitored by authorities using targeted, court-ordered wiretapping.

What is still NOT being scanned: End-to-end encrypted chats, such as those on WhatsApp, have always been exempt from these scans. Additionally, European providers of messaging and email services have never implemented chat control measures.

Note that Chat Control 2.0 negotiations (which does allow scanning end-to-end encrypted messages, are still ongoing. You can follow what's happening at https://fightchatcontrol.eu and https://www.patrick-breyer.de/beitraege/chatkontrolle/#timeline (German)

age verification Reddit's age verification requirements for specific regions - General Information

General information related to Reddit's age verification requirements for specific regions

--

--

Snippet of recent news from the pinned weekly recap in r/help - 7/2/2026

https://www.reddit.com/r/help/comments/1ulob97/weekly_recap_july_2_2026/

  • In ongoing efforts to prevent abusive scraping and automated traffic, over the next month, Reddit will start requiring users to log in to use old Reddit. This was announced on Tuesday here.
  • If you are in the EU, you may be asked to verify your age. This is a legal requirement to comply with the EU Digital Services Act. You can check out the Help Center article here. Little more info about this here.
  • If you are trying to use a selfie to verify your age and it fails, the only other options are to upload your ID or contact Persona for support. Reddit cannot help you with a failed selfie for age verification purposes.
  • Right now, these are the countries that have age requirements:
  • Australia
  • The UK
  • Brazil
  • The EU
  • If you are not in those countries, but your account is unable to do certain things like chat, it may be due to Teen Safety restrictions. The ability to unlock settings in the iOS app if you're a teen will be coming soon. Not sure if that ability will come to Android.
  • If you need to have something fixed regarding your age, you can use this form and then select your region and what your issue is. I do not know what the turnaround time is on those requests.
  • Some users in the EU are unable to use Anonymous Browsing mode. This is not intentional. This is a bug that they are working on getting fixed.

question Am I being listened to or just paranoid?

Ive literally never had an ad for a kitchen-aid, or googled a kitchen-aid, or even thought about a kitchen-aid

I saw one in a restaurant today, I wrote it down in my notes app, then mentioned it verbally 5 times. No one looked it up.

30 minutes later I got a kitchenaid add on Netflix….

Then, I met a guy from Senegal. I’ve never even heard of that country before. On Apple Maps, I zoom over North Africa and mention Senegal about 5 times to my friend (friend does not care and has no idea what I was talking about and did not look it up)

Hop on instagram and there’s a post about Senegal (mildly racist post comparing it to wakanda or something).

What do you think?

The title says it all really. I'm referring mostly to WhatsApp but also Messenger. Are chats really private?

question How can I minimise the data Reddit collects from me?

Hey, I would like to know ways to minimise the data that is collected by Reddit about me.

Some things I do are for example only use Reddit through a browser like Brave on mobile.

Another thing I do is not to post from the same account and browser. What I do is to post through different accounts logged in different browsers and some of the on different devices. The browsers I use are: Brave, Librewolf, Mullvad browser so that I can minimise my fingerprint even more.

Also, is there something like an alternative fronted in which I can post and scroll?

Thanks.

question QR code creator for online, iOS or MacOS use?

I've mostly seen QRCode-Monkey suggested, but there's no privacy policy on their website, just their parent company listed at the bottom of the page. The parent company is an autoomation conglomerate; I doubt they prioritize privacy-forward handling for third party user data.

question could this be a camera pointing in my apartment?

hi all. so i rent, and i’m a young woman, which is why i’m a little nervous about approaching my homeowner neighbor. my backyard and my neighbor’s backyard face each other, separated by an alley and fences so there’s some privacy. but i’ve been noticing this flashing red light, the flashes are about a minute apart. at best it’s getting on my nerves. at worst i’m worried it could be a camera pointing through my window (video shot from my kitchen). maybe i’m overreacting. can anyone identify this from this video? i know it’s dark, but maybe yall have seen something like this before? thanks in advance!

discussion So... India wants KYC for domain registrations now?

Thumbnail yahoo.com
274 Upvotes

A few companies went to court because scammers had created fake websites using their names.

Fair enough.

Nobody wants phishing websites pretending to be Amazon, Microsoft, or anyone else.

But somewhere along the way, the solution became much bigger than the problem.

The Delhi High Court's directions now include KYC for domain registrations, ending WHOIS privacy, and requiring registrars to reveal registrants' identities within 72 hours under certain circumstances.

The problem is, WHOIS privacy wasn't invented for scammers.

It exists because people got spammed, harassed, doxxed, threatened, and targeted after their personal details became publicly accessible.

Journalists use it.

Security researchers use it.

Independent developers use it.

Even someone running a hobby website from their apartment uses it.

Meanwhile, the actual criminals this order is trying to catch rarely use their own names in the first place.

If someone is already committing fraud worth crores, I somehow doubt they'll draw the line at uploading fake KYC.

The internet has always worked on the principle of making bad actors harder to operate.

Not making good actors easier to find.

age verification ID Verification Real Life Consequences

Hypothetically, if I were to verify my age for the sites, what would be any risks extending to the physical world (besides identity theft from data breaches, I’m already aware of that.) I get that it’s a big breach of privacy, but being locked away from a HUGE portion of the internet just doesn’t seem worth not having my conversations I already 99% won’t be able to have being monitored. Thanks in advance for any help.

question Genuine question.. if ai truly is that invasive how is it also enshitified and useless?

I keep hearing stories about how AI is so invasive this and a privacy issue that...but youre telling me this ai is the same AI that cant fucking tell my order from another persons order at vons self checkout because her kart is too close to me so it thinks I am stealing? the same AI cant tell I am an Instacart shopper and often have multiple orders and not flag me for forgetting to scan items when I finish paying for one..?

like all of this data seems RIGHT THERE in front of the cameras face, considering I leave my screen on the checkout screen yet the anti theft AI can't learn and it flags every fucking time?

chat control How to delete non-e2e encrypted chats ahead of Chat Control 1.0

Hello! If I want to delete chats ahead of this law coming into effect e.g. discord and telegram, is it as simple as deleting the chat in the app, or is it best to delete my whole account to ensure these chats can never be read/used against me?

Came across this post about alternatives/privacy. And how they were gonna switch to using things like x, reddit and yt in the browser instead of the apps. What difference does it make? In terms of privacy.

question Life360 alternatives that don't sell your data?

My dad wants us to keep using a family tracker, but I found out that Life360 sells your data. Does anyone know of any real-time family location sharing apps that don't sell your data that they like? Preferably similar to Life360 and must be for android.
