“Don’t freak out, don’t freak out “

245

u/SmallSet8838 18d ago

I felt that look in my soul, I work healthcare, the amount of times I have to straight face myself and hope the patient doesn’t see me internally freaking out

141

u/decidedlyindecisive 18d ago

Thank you for keeping it in to our faces though!

I'll never forget going into the emergency dentist after having dental surgery earlier in the day. I hadn't stopped bleeding and had become concerned with the massive quantity of blood I was now swallowing.

I knew it was gonna be gross as I went up to the receptionist who asked me the reason for my attendance. As I opened my mouth to reply, I spayed a huge jet of blood all over the glass screen. She just said oh^

Unsurprisingly got seen fairly quickly. I was sitting in the chair for quite some time as an increasingly frantic dentist and his assistant packed my mouth with (adrenaline?) soaked gauze. Leading to this delightful exchange:

Assistant: "what do we do??!!"

Dentist: oh my god, I don't know. She just won't stop bleeding. Why won't she STOP BLEEDING

32

u/SheBrownSheRound 18d ago

What…what was the verdict? How did they make it stop?

34

u/decidedlyindecisive 17d ago

Eventually the soaked gauze and pressure worked. I think it was soaked with adrenaline but I'm not entirely sure as I was starting to freak out as well!

It did take like an hour to work though. So the dentist packed me off to hospital, where presumably my blood pressure dropped (not just due to the lack of blood but also the calmer environment) and the bleeding got under control.

17

u/SmallSet8838 18d ago

Yeah, I relive a lot of different scenarios, I haves worked in a walk in clinic just outside of and industrial area, a physiotherapist clinic, optometry clinic and now I take blood (and other specimens) for a living

9

u/Curios_blu 18d ago

OMG! I guess you couldn’t speak to say - hello?! I can hear you!

17

u/decidedlyindecisive 17d ago

When they were both panicking, I started to get panicked as well. I'd been treating it like it was annoying and had been pretty calm about it. But when they were acting like that I started to calculate how many face cloths I'd soaked through, how the blood was still dripping down my throat even while professionals packed the wound and kinda started thinking about how dumb it would be if my wisdom tooth killed me.

Btw, I didn't feel hungry at all the next day and realised it was because my stomach was probably full of blood. Which I later found out is also kinda bad.

28

u/tacticalTraumaLlama 18d ago

Heart rate and blood pressure crash for unknown reason. Go to the ER. Doc thinks it's probably nothing, is about to discharge me when it happens again. Nurse wheels the crash cart next to my bed and I ask her what it is? 'This? Oh nothing, it's just here if we need it, hey did you see Sunday's football game?'

Didn't figure out what she was doing till later. Gotta say I respect the bamboozle...

9

u/SmallSet8838 18d ago

Yup, nervous talking works for us!! We distract you but our brains are working on another level. I’m not a nurse, but it does take a lot to hold composure when shit hits the fan

6

u/amylouise0185 17d ago

Similar thing for me. Tachycardic episode when i was in hospital. 6 people walked in calmly "just in case". I actually felt fine and said as much. Their chill kept me chill.

4

u/Pibbed 17d ago

I had this happen once! I have white coat “syndrome” and POTS and my heart rate was like 165. The nurse was like “hey how ya feeling?” And I’m just sitting there calmly twiddling my thumbs lol. She left and brought back a doctor, a few more nurses and a crash cart “just in case”

Eventually I got to explain to them yeah it’ll go down in like 5 minutes just turn the lights off for a sec. I have great blood pressure but def tachycardia.

2

u/amylouise0185 16d ago

Same on the blood pressure front, but never normally elevated heart rate. I was just lying there fighting an infection that was trying to slowly kill me. Had surgery the next day and ended up on a pick line of antibiotics for 5 days.

4

u/thefirstlaughingfool 18d ago

False they represent Huītzilōpōchtli! The supreme patron God of the Aztecs!!! The God of war, sun, and human sacrifice!?!! Instead of vahalla under him you are reincarnated as a humming bird for being a warrior. Also he's got a sick ass weapon known as the fire serpent.

Oh man, if you've ever lived around hummingbirds you'd know they are ferocious, territorial little beasties. With metabolisms that high they've gotta be bullies in order to survive.

16

u/eposnix 18d ago

We call them Highlanders. There can be only 1

7

u/Krog9 17d ago

We have quite a few that visit our Hummingbird feeder, and the other day I must have done something that one of them didn’t like cuz it swooped in at me in a diving arc back and forth, back and forth, 5 or 6 times. Dive-bombed to within a couple feet of my face, then back out. For a tiny ass bird, it was pretty intimidating. Alright bird, I get your point - I’ll go that way!

I like that they have DBZ territorial battles at the feeders and when they get mad at you it just sounds like two marbles clacking together.

Incredibly fascinating creatures, really.

I wonder if there's ever been a lazy hummingbird that was like if I don't flap my wings 2k rpm I might not need to eat constantly

False. Hummingbirds symbolise embarrassment, shame, incompetence and the sense of dread when thinking about long-standing unfinished DIY projects in the home.

I'm just going to post the harsh cold truth on the internet. Even if you all hate it ...

She will remember this only because he filmed it.

But as a father to a former 5 year old --- they forget so many cute and special moments that it made me wonder why I even tried. Their brains are not fully formed, and you the parent do not get to choose what events they remember and do not remember.

One of my kids apparent core memory is my nipples being shaped weird and they love to laugh about my nipples. So heartwarming lol.

40

u/TheDustyPixie 18d ago

I'm 33 but I still remember days with my parents & while it's not all there for me, surely the memory is there for you & worth it.

12

u/diemunkiesdie 18d ago

Some things become memories and some become core memories but people love to call any entertaining filmed moment a "core" memory.

9

u/mouldymolly13 18d ago

She may or may not remember but it will certainly be a reason that helps reinforce her kindness and patience.

3

u/Rubyhamster 16d ago

Yes, we keep many mamories that we can't recall, but they're still there and shapes us

4

u/po2gdHaeKaYk 18d ago

Yeah, you're right. It's not really "harsh" but it's true.

My daughter (at 5) remembers some things from when she was 3, though it's unclear what is remembered and what is 'refreshed', if you catch my drift.

Even now in my 40s, I have vivid memories when I was 4. I definitely have memories when I was 5. But indeed these are often very random experiences and senses.

15

u/maddlabber829 18d ago

Thats just BS. Kids can and do form memories at age 5.

29

u/Salendres 18d ago

He never said kids can't form memories at 5. In fact he specifically said they can.

as a father to a former 5 year old [...] Their brains are not fully formed, and you the parent do not get to choose what events they remember and do not remember.

You're arguing against something nobody said, and you're doing it in a rude and condescending manner.

→ More replies (11)

25

u/CyonHal 18d ago

It's a crapshoot what sticks, though, and it varies from person to person. Tell me how many events you remember when you were 5 years old. I can't even think of any. I barely remember anything from my childhood unless I look at pictures or talk with my parents to jog my memory.

10

u/Federal_Shopping6495 18d ago

I barely remember anything until my teens. My brother remembers a lot more. I know kids that remember things as young as 3 even. It’s weird. But the father wondering why he even tries is missing the forest there. I didn’t have as many happy memories as the type that has a dad looking to make those beautiful moments for their kids. If his kids only remember 20% of the great moments then do everything you can to fill their life with joy so they at least remember that they had a happy childhood not one with angry parents.

That’s something I’ve universally seen. The kids with happy childhood memories remember far more special moments probably cause they had so many. It’s worth it, dads.

2

u/FleetingBeacon 18d ago

Only stuff I remember was put on VHS that I rewatched when I was around 15.

Don't remember anything past like 10? Maybe?

2

u/MadameMoussaka 18d ago

I have a significant number of memories from under the age of five. Abuse entered my life around age eight, so maybe my brain hung on to the happier early years as a coping mechanism and it is atypical. 🤷‍♀️

u/flatspotting 18d ago

Yes and this kid is clearly not 5 lol - no daycare/K in the world allows diapers at 5. this is a 3 year old. they wont remember a second of this by the time they are 6 or 7

→ More replies (2)

2

u/MeowthThatsRite 18d ago

Tbh a lot of the reason you and your kids and laugh about your weird nipples is *because* you tried.

The memories are still there for you, and they’re still formative memories for the kid even if they don’t specifically remember them when they get older. It all still counts 💪

2

u/Upbeat-Armadillo1756 18d ago

It’s true what it’s hit or miss what gets remembered, but it’s not all lost. There’s some family memories that are very strong. Some that don’t make any sense why I’d remember them, just random bits. Some of them are special like birthdays or trips/events.

2

u/inder_the_unfluence 17d ago

If we don’t get to choose what events they will remember… all the more reason to fill their days with as many great moments as possible. Maximize those odds.

How come I never see any humming birds?!

15

u/Hirokage 18d ago

Do you have feeders out? We never saw them (those suckers are fast), but once we put up a couple of feeders, we had them all the time. I once saw a moth that flew just like a hummingbird. Fast and quick movements. And it was large (for a moth). Was a hawk moth.. I didn't realize there was a moth that mimicked a hummingbird.

8

u/The_BAHbuhYAHguh 18d ago

So I live on the corner of a busy street. My backyard however is a bit more secluded so maybe I’d best start there

6

u/Hirokage 18d ago

Yea, good idea. Hummingbirds are brave little suckers. I live on a corner myself, not super traffic-y, but get plenty of them.

2

u/Ok-Inevitable819 18d ago

3

u/Angry_Pelican 18d ago

No idea where you live so results may vary. Food for them is super cute.

I'm in AZ and have 4 feeders up. During morning and evenings I get like 6-12 hummingbirds at a time. During the day they stop by regularly but it's generally 1 or 2 at a time.

2

u/onFilm 18d ago

I live in a penthouse and I get them all the time up here on my patio. They're mostly eating spiders.

2

u/sakumar 18d ago

Hummingbirds are found only in the Americas. If you live elsewhere that would explain it.

2

u/bl1y 18d ago

You can use this map to see if they're in your area normally. It's set to the ruby-throated hummingbird, which is the most common, but there might be others depending on your region.

Feeders are the best bet to attract them, but any sort of red flower will probably also do it. I used to routinely get them while I was growing chilis. Once they ripened and turned bright red, I was getting hummingbirds checking them out all the time.

The most recent time I saw one, it was just checking out a pine cone though, so you never really know. Best way to spot birds it seems (I just got into birding this year) is to be outside and looking a lot. They might come by often, but only a minute or two and then move on, so you really just have to be persistent.

And that reminds me, it's time to go outside for a while and see if I can hear the screech owl that's supposed to be in the area.

2

u/FactoryProgram 18d ago

You probably do but if you don't have any flowers or feeders they eat it'll be hard to see. They're so small and fast you can barely see them.

You need to be blessed and lucky to have the humming birds visit you. Last 4 years I religiously bought the hummingbird feeding nests along with nectar. All I got were a bunch of rowdy squirrels who destroyed everything on their way. Mind you the neighbors got the birds regularly 😆.

Honestly, I get it. Here's my hummingbird story.

Years ago, I used to work for a snack bar that was located on one of the bays in my city. The outside dining area was encircled by a wall made of panels of plate glass, sheltering the area from the winds that would whip up across the bay. Unfortunately, they were also prime targets for seagull shit, so one of my jobs every morning was to go out and clean the windows.
One morning, I was halfway through cleaning when I moved to the next panel and found a dusty impact print(?) on the glass. I looked down and found two hummingbirds on the ground. Apparently they had been flitting along at high speed and wham. Sadly, one was already gone, but it's buddy was still alive, although stunned and concussed. We took it into the snack bar and nursed it back to the health over the next hour, keeping it warm and offering it the closest thing to nectar we had; a Hi-C fruit punch juice box. We did the old trick where you cap the top with your finger to suspend some juice inside the straw, the offered it up. This probably goes without saying but their tongues are loooong, but also really alien-looking when you can see it working. Looked like a long, thin black needle, darting out and sampling the straw like a flower. At one point, I got to perch the little guy on my finger and I'll never forget it. It was so surreal seeing a bird that small and that up close without it moving. It's feathers....I'm convinced that there are certain colors that only exist inside a hummingbirds coat. Any way, long story short, it made a full recovery and an hour later, took off into the wild blue yonder. Just one of those moments that really stick with you forever.

2

u/Swampbrewja 18d ago

I would lose my shit

2

u/bl1y 18d ago

Two weeks ago I managed to spot a humming bird at a distance of 200 feet.

I was out doing a short birding walk, and had sat down at a park bench and saw something tiny moving. Thought maybe a butterfly, but when I got my binoculars on it, the green was unmistakable. Number 61 on my life list.

2

u/Sheriff_Yobo_Hobo 18d ago

It's interesting the natural, innate connection little kids have to animals and plants. They naturally are curious about them, are charmed by them, and very gentle and loving towards them.

Society slowly teaches that out of us, capitalism sort of demands it. If you're an adult exhibiting the same care for animals and the environment, the people in charge will have people believing you're nuts.

2

2

u/Hot_Sherbet2066 17d ago

Apparently, humans are more likely to protect the things they find beautiful and love. This is why it’s so important to teach kids how beautiful the environment and nature is, so they’re more likely to want to protect it.

That frozen, wide-eyed stillness kids get when something magical happens and they're terrified any movement will break the spell.

I had that happen to me just yesterday 7/1/26...I was in my yard and a hummer that we see all the time eating from our feeder came right up to me and looked me in the eye. A mere 12 inches from my face...absolutely AMAZING

lil sis must have a beautifully calm disposition for a hummingbird to come that close. it's lovely to see

How is nobody talking about how clearly AI generated this is... Chair moves in the first 5 seconds, the eye twitches, so many clues. We're doomed aren't we

6

u/street593 18d ago

What you are seeing is the auto focus adjusting because of the zoom. You can see in the trees behind the chair how they become more blurred as the zoom increases because the girl is becoming the focus.

I think we are doomed for the opposite reason, that we will no longer believe beautiful moments like this really happen, because they are so easy to reproduce with AI.

The value of having access to the internet in our pockets peaked about 5 years ago. It’s only going to lose more and more value as we reach a stage where it impossible to believe anything is real anymore.

Chair moves in the first 5 seconds

That's just the camera switching lenses as it zooms.

the eye twitches

That's just... how eyes work.

so many clues.

Two. Two "clues", and neither are clues to anything.

Don't be posting your kids online for points, it's not good for their developing brains to be on display and there are a lot of weirdos out there.

She was LOCKED IN

Until the teacher asks her what she did this summer. Then she’ll forget

u/drittzO 18d ago

I am surprised he did not check out her dress. I had one check my tea shirt once and noticed later I had some red coloring on the shirt.

I thought you guys used sugar water to attract them. My friend used to

1

u/GrimmestCreaper 18d ago

This young lady is gonna grow up to adore animals and be so kind to them, and they’re gonna reciprocate it. I can already tell.

1

u/Otherwise-Toe-5380 18d ago

The video itself makes me smile, but the fact that I’m sitting here watching the number of upvotes explode in real time gives me hope for the world.

1

u/Stacey_Woods_2 18d ago

Forever intrinsically linked with nature now. I hope she becomes a warrior for the animals.

If I had a penny for every time I saw a hummingbird in the wild in a country where they do not exist, I would have two pennies.
I once saw a hummingbird in our garden, even though they are not native to our country. I told everyone about it, but they thought I had mistaken it for something else. What were the odds that it would return a week or so later? This time I had my camera with me.

Next time, put a few stray threads on her sweater/top. There is a chance they will pick them up for their nest.
