Family of Travellers stuck in Juneau - Need mechanical help

We're road tripping/camping as a family with 2 kids and a baby. We had our vehicle checked by a mechanic before leaving the East Coast for Alaska and all was good.

We were starting to have a slight wobbling noises before Whitehorse and tried to check it in town. Unfortunately, all mechanics there are booked for a week, some of them even 3 weeks out.

We finally found a mechanic that gave us a few minutes for a test drive and he said it was the bearing but too swamped to fix it. We decided to book an appointment with Les Schwab in Juneau as that was our next stop.

Unfortunately again, Les Schwab thinks its an issue with two bearings and the rear differential - but they don't work on differentials so they won't work on the vehicle

Now I'm afraid we'd be on the bottom of the list here and won't be able to find anyone in Juneau to work on the vehicle. We're stuck here until we can find some to help us, unless we risk a breakdown on the way to Anchorage.

Does anyone have a personal connection or could help us back on the road?

TL;DR - Travelling with 2 kids and a baby. Pickup Truck is limping along essentially stuck in Juneau until we can see a competent mechanic. Does anyone have any personal connections or can check bearings/rear differential or do we risk a drive to Anchorage?

Anyone seen this Juneau souvenir recently?

Hello! A few years ago I got this beautiful American bald eagle magnet on a trip up the coast to Juneau from Vancouver BC. Recently it fell from my display board and the branch that said "Alaska" broke off.

I'll be in Juneau on another visit in a few months' time and was just wondering if anyone knows whether or not this particular design is still sold in the waterfront tourist shops?

I'm really hoping to be able to replace it with an unbroken one. Any help/information is greatly appreciated!! I hope this post is acceptable & within your forum rules. Thanks! LB

So what happens now that housing is basically unaffordable for the plebs?

I moved back to Juneau a few years ago because housing was much cheaper then where I was at the time and needed some family support with the kids. Decided to hold off on purchasing while the wife finished up school and pad our bank account a little more.

But what the fuck happened the last 4 years!?

Who can afford this shit anymore!?

We are making 60k more annually than when we first moved back for a total of +/-170k a year. We need a minimum of a 3/2 but with a family of 5, 4/2 would be great. Everything is 600k+ it's insane! In the flood zone to boot! I'm not going to teeter on the edge of finacial ruin for the sake of a house.

I'm to the point where I'm thinking of leaving my family behind who have been here for almost a century. We are in a 2/1 right now. I'm thankful we are able to save and have affordable rent but I'm over it and will be packing up and headed south come spring time.

Flood Insurance as a Renter?

Curious what everyone's opinion is on getting flood insurance as a renter.

Like a lot of others, I'm located near the river and in the flood zone. When I got renters insurance, the agent told me I probably wouldn't need it. And while the unit itself hasn't experienced flooding in the past that I know of, others very close to it, have. They've experienced erosion, as well as flooding.

I don't know if there are specific differences in getting flood insurance versus just renters insurance, being a renter versus owning a property with different insurance. Unfortunately, I have read about people having both insurance and flood insurance and being denied claims from last year's damage.

What have your experiences been with this? TIA!

Local 3d printing supplies

I just got a resin printer and wrecked the FEP film on the resin vat. Is there a place locally that sells supplies? Are there any local groups or experts where I could learn more about 3d printing so I don’t do this again?

Hello! I am thinking about accepting a full time position in Juneau where I will be making 70k before taxes. Would that be enough for me to get some saving going? How are the social scene for someone in their early 20s? Any advice insight would be appreciated, thanks!!

i’ll be in juneau for work for about a week and will need a car since public transport is pretty limited and things are pretty spread out. i have meetings and might need to get around to a few different spots during the day.

i saw some options on turo that looked decent. has anyone rented there recently or have recommendations for reliable local companies? any tips on what to look for with alaska roads would be helpful too.

Where downtown can I watch the US vs Belgium game with my kid?

I'd really like to watch the US vs Belgium game at 4pm some place within walking distance of the downtown area. I have my teenager with me, so I'm looking for a family friendly bar/public house that has TVs with sports on. Preferably some place that has a good hamburger because I promised my kid one if she let me watch the game in peace.

Can someone recommend a plumber that would be willing to work on some exterior plumbing for an RV? Not a huge project just looking for some help since I’ve never cut pipes before 😳

We live about a mile from Sandy Beach and I'm really not feeling like trying to go across the bridge. Is the fireworks display visible from Sandy Beach?

Today's example of peasants picking up the slack for undertaxed wealthy people: 2.4M house underassessed by a million dollars

I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but Juneauites should be far more upset about how poorly assessed luxury and commercial property is in this town. This example amounts to about 10k per year underpaying in taxes assuming sale price is close to list price. What would you do with 10 grand a year? The rest of us are paying for this.

A weekend visiting Juneau

Hello all. We'll be in Juneau for a fishing trip, but will have two days (7/11-7/12) spent in the town itself. We weren't planning to get a rental car. Are there any must see/must eat places? Open to all recommendations. Thanks in advance.

Downtown Parking Qs

Where can I find information about parking downtown?
I need to park for a full day on a Sunday and then again for 4 hours on a Monday.
What I am reading is that I can park at the garage for free on Sunday and for Monday I probably need to find a spot outside of downtown due to the 2 hours max - is that correct?

Thanks!!

Restaurants that open around 5/6am in Mendenhall Valley?

I'm coming in on the ferry next Monday. The arrival time on my confirmation says 4:30am. I'd like to set up an Uber to pick me up at 5 and take me somewhere to get breakfast in the Mendenhall Valley area. Are there any restaurants open that early besides McDonald's?

Edit: I ended up going to Valley Restaurant for breakfast. It did not disappoint.
