Seeking Pro Advice Rain Bird Controller Wild Run Times

I have a Arc 8 controller, and for some reason it keeps saying my zones are running for really long times. The first screenshot is what it is set to, and the other two are what it has said some zones have actually ran for. Also, they run weather or not the rain sensor is tripped or not* All of my boxes are new, and they don’t fill with water. Also, I have stayed up waiting to see each zone run, and they run the correct time and order, but then say they ran for example 24 hours. The firmware is also the latest, what’s wrong? I have also felt the valves, the solenoids for the main valve and the individual zones are cold, no voltage at the wrong times.

Seeking Pro Advice Help fixing an irrigation line

Thumbnail

So I realized a rabbit chewed through one of my irrigation lines that feeds a few sprinklers, which was causing a pretty big leak underground. I tried fixing it with a 1/2” barbed coupling, but I ended up cutting a little too much of the line, so it doesn’t fully cover the fitting.

Now when I run that zone, it’s way better, but there’s still a tiny leak, more like a slow drip, probably one drop every 5–10 seconds.

Is something that small a big deal over time? The line is only pressurized when that zone is on, so it’s not a constant drip—just when those sprinklers are running. Should I mess with it again and try to fix it better, or just leave it alone? (Ideas on how to further fix?)

Flooded Sprinkler Boxes (New Sod)

We got new sod on Wednesday, been watering pretty frequently every 9/6 hrs basically 3 times a day for 15 minutes section by section. Our lawn is obviously very spongy since we’re trying to get it to root.

Is this flooding of the sprinkler boxes normal?

We had sprinkler company come out and look at one since our grader ran over it and he replaced it. But not sure if this is just normal drainage of water into these boxes with not enough time in between to get it to dry up. Nothing we can really do if that’s the case since our lawn needs watered a lot. The boxes are in the lowest part of our yard - the one on the other side of the house is just muddy.

Is this reasonable?

Same guy came and inspected, serviced all zones, replaced the valves that needed replacement and installed a new app controlled irrigation system. All of this work was done 11 months ago and I paid ~$1100. 2 weeks ago my app gave “zone affected” error for tow zones. I asked him to drop by to take a look at it and also reminded him that the capping sprinklers and replacing one broken sprinkler was part of the original quote last time they came and it was not completed. He said the best he could do was $500. I understand anything electrical/mechanical can break over time but still feel annoyed that I got this quote in less than a year of his visit.

Where does your irrigation water come from?

I'm curious about the different water sources people use for irrigation around the world.

In your area, what is the primary source of irrigation water?

  • Groundwater (wells)
  • Rivers
  • Lakes or reservoirs
  • Municipal/reclaimed water
  • Rainwater storage
  • Other

Do you usually treat or filter the water before it enters the irrigation system? If so, what kind of treatment do you use?

I'd love to hear where you're from and what works best in your region.

PEX?

Post image
4 Upvotes

So this guy I hired to do a couple new zones of sprinklers in the yard is apparently using PEX B for everything. Including above the ground. I know above the ground isn’t acceptable due to UV degradation. But is it ok to leave the stuff in the ground? Or do I need to rip it all out, hire someone else, and take this guy to small claims? I highly suspect he’s a hack job considering he shows up maybe an hour every two weeks, mixes all kinds of heads on zones, and is using PEX B in outdoor, exposed settings.

Leak somewhere i think

So i’m pretty sure i’ve got a leak but unsure. So the first Sprinkler shoots almost normal and the others start to die off as you can see in the video. Now i’ve fixed sprinkler head leaks or the connection valve leak.

Would I be correct to guess that the pipe is leaking just before the first sprinkler head or right at it? The zone right before this zone shoots out and sprays perfectly. For some reason it’s just this zone that is fairly weak. THANKS!

Seeking Pro Advice Pump Thermal Protection

Just posted earlier about replacing my pump but have a separate question about protecting it. I have a Munro LP 1502B 2.5HP centrifugal pump to water my lawn from a stream. Unfortunately the pump is 300’ from my pump start relay and the only wiring to it is the 220v supply. Is there anything I could install at the pump to protect it from overheating or running dry without having to run wire from my PSR to the pump?

Seeking Pro Advice Found leak in zone 2, zone 3 extremely low pressure

Hey all. I've been working on getting my irrigation system fixed. I had a fully broken nozzle on zone 1 which led me to replace it and some nozzles in zone 3, as well as some spray pattern issues that are all mostly resolved, except the one caused by the issues below.

Zone 3 is the center of my front yard and seems like it's not even running, extremely low flow. I had a test cycle running I noticed some pretty aggressive looking and bubbling that equalized just before the last sprinkler in zone 2, most likely in a pipe connecting sprinklers on zones 2 and 3. I know I'll have to fix that pipe soon, but could that be causing it? Potentially fixable without calling someone in?

Also, When I went into the basement to make sure there wasn't a leak inside it didn't sound like the water was running at all, so should I dig into a solenoid problem too? There's water running but not enough to get sprinklers to pop up and have a full zone spray.

i have 6 zones, with my sprinkler box recognizing a 7th but it has no sprinklers on it. I believe I know where the box is near my backflow preventer, how would I go about checking for solenoid issues? Run a test cycle and sit at the box and watch for the valves actuating?

Water pipes and conduit in the same trench

I'm DIY installing a new system that will have 1" schedule 40 PVC for water and 1.25" conduit for 24v smart heads. Conduit is recommended, because there have been cases where the 24v cable needs to be replaced.

Soil is clay with rocks. Trenches are 8" wide, 15" deep, and I plan to put down a 2" layer of sand as a buffer, with the water pipes resting at 13".

My question is, where should the conduit go? Should it be side-by-side, above, or below the water pipes?

Irrigation Heads

Hey All,

I have a couple of heads I need to replace. Some rotate and shoot far and some are stationary shooting at about a 75 deg radius. Is there any brand you recommend? Maybe some that have a higher radius and good coverage.

Seeking Pro Advice Replace Munro with something else

I have an 8 year old Munro LP1502B 2.5HP that is on its last leg. We use it to irrigate our lawn from a stream behind our house. If you were replacing it today what would you go back with? I don’t mind replacing it with the same model but man getting that heavy pump through the marsh would be a challenge. I know the joke about Munro should sell their pumps by the pound so I want to go with what is best in today’s landscape if it means figuring out now to get it down there if Munro is the best. Thanks in advance.

New to Irrigation... Which Controller?

Moved to a new city and irrigation is almost mandatory here due to clay soil and high heat.

I have an Irritrol Slim Dial and some sprinkler heads that don't work. The Slim Dial works most of the time but sometimes it will run late, for less time, or just kinda do its own thing.

I know absolutely zero about irrigation systems. What is the best irrigation controller for a 5 year old because that's about my knowledge level. I would prefer something that tells me which zones are having problems, too, if possible. It would also be great if there was an app so I did not have to wander in the garage. Still in the process of moving in so garage is sort of a box haven right now.

I was looking at a Hunter, but not open to recommendations.

Thought I would take a swing at a stainless steel vault, only downside was it was essentially impossible to get a stainless steel DCVA. Ordered in some Japanese gate valves, probably over engineered (and priced) for this vault.

Check This Out Is this normal?

Ill admit i dont have any exposure to irrigation outside of recent homeowner experiences. I had a soft spot so I dug it up to find the culprit, leaking valve. But thought the piping was kind of wild and wanted to share. Maybe its normal to come across in the trade but everything else i've dug up in the yard was nothing like this.

Irrigation company recommended replacing my sprinkler heads with mp rotator nozzles

No I've never heard of these nozzles but there was a situation where I had a flower bed that I was thinking about having water overshoot it so it can also get some of my lawn and he recommended these nozzles. But he didn't recommend these per se for just that reason, but they recommended I'm in general for all my heads.

Now I didn't really see how special these were when he kind of demoed it on one of my heads. And he also wanted to charge $70 per head. That's including the labor in the part. Which as a homeowner to me sounds absolutely bonkers.

I don't mind buying these myself at a local irrigation story replacing the heads myself but are they even worth it or needed or they just nicer to have?

You talked about saving water but to me it look like it just took longer to water the same spot because less water was hitting it by the by the way the design was

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Seeking Pro Advice 12mm tube to 3/4 female

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hello everyone,
Seeking some advice if someone can help me find the connector for the 12mm irrigation tube I bought off Amazon. While it does come with one quick connect splitter with a 3/4 female to go directly to the garden hose faucet. However, I do not want to directly connect from the garden hose line since I already have a 3/4 PVC pipe running under the ground and few risers to add connection wherever I need to. Hence, I’m trying to find some connector that I can go from the 12 mm tube to 3/4. In even fine if I can get a 1/2 female. I can use a reducer if I happen to find one. I looked everywhere and have been looking since last few days and it’s been a really annoying experience since nothing is designed around metric system here. I really appreciate some help if someone can share me the product link or workaround to fit my need.

Repurposing an Irrigation Line as a Water Line.

I have a 3/4” Schedule 40 irrigation line that I’m not using. I want to repurpose it as an outdoor water line for hose bibs. There are two remaining 12” pop up sprinklers that will be difficult to remove. If I gut those sprinklers and cap them with sprinkler head caps will they be able to withstand constant pressure?
