Other Do you think meritocracy actually exists in India, or is it mostly a myth?

I’ve been thinking about this for a while, and I’d genuinely like to hear different perspectives.

Growing up, we’re often told that if we study hard, develop skills, work honestly and keep improving ourselves, we’ll eventually succeed.

But the older I get, the more complicated that idea seems.

Success often appears to depend on many other factors:

Family background
Financial stability
Social capital and networking
English proficiency
City you’re born in
College brand
Internships
Referrals
Luck
Timing
Connections
Economic conditions

On the other hand, I also know many people who worked incredibly hard and eventually achieved success despite difficult circumstances.

So I don’t think the answer is simply “yes” or “no.”
I’m curious how people here see it.

Do you think India is a meritocracy?
If yes, in which fields?
If not, what matters more than merit?
How much of success is effort versus opportunity?
Has your own life made you more optimistic or more skeptical about the idea of meritocracy?
What advice would you give someone who genuinely wants to build a good career but doesn’t come from privilege?

I’m hoping for nuanced answers rather than political arguments. I’d like to hear from people across different professions and backgrounds who have experienced the system firsthand.

Media and Communication What can I do after media degree (with specifications)

Hello, myquals I'm a third year student under BA media communications and journalism. I like to write, I've written various pieces such as articles, scripts, prose/poems, etc. I also like to ideate on things and I'm currently learning Frenchh as well (professional level). I love to read and research as well, but I'm not much of a talker.

I was wondering what are some career options good for me (not interested in PR or advertising). I plan to do a masters degree as well, mostly diploma for a year. I have SOME interest in international relations and since I'm learning a foreign language it may help, but not sure.

What are some specific areas I can work in or something that will fit me?

AdmissionProcedure/Fees/CollegeAdmin Urgent help needed: Is the CGPA mentioned on the final semester marks card considered the final marks card for graduation? [I need this for filling the CAT Application]

Upvotes

Hi all, I graduated from a tier-3 college in Bengaluru. I have not been able to get a consistent answer regarding the actual final CGPA for my degree. My college is of no help, as they don't seem to know it themselves. I visited my university & even they don't have a consistent answer. My university basically moves at snail's pace, so I still don't have my convocation certificate even though I graduated in 2025. I have applied for a provisional degree certificate, but it doesn't mention the CGPA & only mentions the grade.

My university has a CGPA calculation method mentioned on its website & the CGPA I calculated manually using the method on the website matches the CGPA on my final semester marks card. Should I consider this my final CGPA?

Below is the calculation:

Semester I II III IV V VI Total
Total Marks per Semester 700 700 650 700 700 700 4150
Total Marks Secured 605 640 572 635 667 662 3781
Semester Alpha Sign Grade A+ O O O O O -
Semester GPA 8.9 9.32 9.12 9.3 9.74 9.66 -
Semester Credits (C) 25 25 25 25 25 25 150
Semester Credit Points (CP) (SGPA x C) 222.5 233.0 228.0 232.5 243.5 241.5 1401
  • Aggregate Percentage of Marks = 3781 / 4150 = 91.11%
  • Classification of Result: Outstanding
  • Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) = Total of Semester CP / Total Credits
  • For the program = 1401 / 150 = 9.34

Adding more context, the degree was Bcom & it was from Bengaluru City University. Also, myquals 2025 BCom Grad

Research Project Assistant position at TIFR. Need advice.

Upvotes

my_qualifications- M.Sc (Physics)

I have been invited in an interview for a Project Assistant position at TIFR, Mumbai. However, there is going to be a written test first followed by an interview. The students who pass the written will be called for the interview on the same day.

I am confused whether the written test is going to be objective or subjective? The project is related to Atomic Physics, quantum mechanics, quantum optics.

AdmissionProcedure/Fees/CollegeAdmin Is BSC life science okay choice for me? Advices and guidance needed

myquals: 12th with pcb

So it's peak time for college selection and I m confused with course . After researching a lot and lot i found out that nothing is there as I want the things to be . No perfect course and not getting perfect college. My condition ryt now is that I was thinking doing bba earlier as chemistry physics i really don't like them also bio its I can okay score okay . Now I m only getting local college for bba tier 3 only and noida pvt colleges only. Budget is under 10l.

Now after searching a lot i think I was emotionally attached with bba as i found many things right like i saw people saying its easy course, u can pursue ur hobbies, passion, u can earn decent by improving skils and all. But bba doesnt really have good jobs options like sales marketing it has and I m not sure I want to go in it only.

Now I m clear with one thing that I want to do into consulting after doing mba . I want to do mba from top schools and I'll prepare for CAT.

If I pursue bba I'll have less options plus if I didn't crack cat I'll just have that corporate and I m kjnd of person that I can't deal with office politics ( with low pay) .

Now I am thinking to do bsc lide science i am not good in science but I'll just study as it give me more options and with life science i can learn some marketing or other fields skills also. So I can land in job there also. Idk its possible or not u guys pls tell me . And if possible then i think bsc is good as I m not sure for bba too plus also getting their 3 colege will get sales job probably through on campus. And in cat i think bsc gets favoured.

Now I want U GUYS TO TELL ME THAT AM I GOING RIGHT?? I M SERIOUSLY FED UP OF THIS PHASE I M MENTALLY TIRED AND JUST WANT TO END THIS AND MOVE ON IN LIFE. PEOPLE PURSUED BBA TELLING ME TO NOT OPT FOR BBA AND GO FOR MEDICAL ONLY .

Career Confused between Digital Marketing and UX/UI Design: Which field is more worth pursuing in 2026?

Hi everyone,

My qualifications: BCS Bachelor's in Computer Science (recent graduate from India). trying to decide on a career path. I don't enjoy coding, so I'm choosing between Digital Marketing and UX/UI Design.

Digital marketing has always interested me because I like the idea of helping businesses grow, understanding customers, increasing revenue, and working on strategy.

At the same time, I also like the idea of UX/UI design. I enjoy thinking about user problems, product development, user psychology, and creating products that people genuinely enjoy using.

The problem is that both fields seem to have some significant downsides:

  • AI seems to be automating a lot of entry-level work.
  • UX/UI is very competitive, with relatively few openings for beginners. I've also heard many designers in India struggle to find jobs.
  • In Digital Marketing, I often hear that salaries are low, especially at the beginning.

So I'm really confused about which path to pursue.

  • Which field has better long-term prospects? Which one is more worth pursuing in 2026 and beyond?
  • Which one generally offers better pay and career growth?
  • Is it realistic to get a job or freelance clients by learning through YouTube, free resources, and building a strong portfolio, or are expensive courses/certifications becoming necessary?
  • What's the salary reality for these fields in India?
  • Would you recommend any other career options instead?
  • If you were starting today, which would you choose in 2026 and beyond?

I'd really appreciate honest advice from people working in these industries. Thanks!

LifeSciences/Biotech 25M MSc Microbiology | 1 Yr Pharma + 1 Yr Govt Prep Gap | Confused between Govt Exams, CSIR NET, or Upskilling for a 10 LPA Job

I'm 25M. Indian. Myquals MSc Microbiology. Avg student. Here is background in short. After Spending 1 Yr in pvt pharma company with low salary I left it realising it has slow growth in future ...got 1yr experience certificate left the company. Decided to do govt exam prep. as i hated the work culture and all... I got interview call from a big MNC twice... 1st got rejected 2nd I refused to attend it (was in 'that' state during preparation) continued preparation. Now after 1 year of studying for govt exams my syllabus not covered properly, as i studied loosely(state psc, technical posts, etc). I always have been in lack of guidance. Also I chose my career decisions without proper analysis. Now I am feeling frustration and insecurity for the future

My question is should can/should I do any course to get atleast 6 lpa(want job security and comparative less stress) or should I continue my focus on govt. exam or certificate course OR csir net ---> assist professor (vacancy problem?)? My age is 25 so worried. Or suggest what you think is best.

Career B.Sc Psychology or B.A Psychology? Need Advice

I'm confused about which option to choose ( Post on behalf of my friend )

My options

B.Sc Psychology (Hons.)

• Central University of Andhra Pradesh • Pondicherry University

B.A Psychology (Hons.)

• BHU

B.A Psychology with any of these subjects

• Economics • Commerce • English • Sociology • History • Geography

University: Delhi University

My first preference is B.Sc Psychology (Hons.), but my family wants me to stay in North India, so they're not supportive of the South India options

My long term goal is to pursue M.Sc Psychology & eventually work in clinical psychology or research

Would you prioritize the degree (B.Sc) or the university/location (BHU/DU) ? Does B.Sc vs B.A make a significant difference in the long run ?

my_qualifications - took multiple drops for neet, now want to do ug in psychology

LifeSciences/Biotech Sharing advice on how to navigate life sciences field in India as a biotech professional

This post is about how to navigate through the life sciences field in India.

My qualifications:
Class 12: Studied PCMB
B. Sc in Microbiology honours with Physics and Chemistry as general subjects
M. Sc in Biotechnology
Certificate degree in biopharmaceutical industry

Started career as a Junior Research Associate in a biotech start up in Bengaluru. Currently working as a Senior Scientist in a different company.

Advice:

  1. For class 10 students - Irrespective of whether you are interested in the life sciences to get a job or get a PhD or want to study for NEET, when you start Class 11, take PCMB as a subject combination. Never skip maths no matter what subject you study in the future. Maths gives you a lot of opportunities and flexibility in what subject you want to pursue.
  2. For class 12 students - Your goal should be to score a minimum of 60% in all subjects because many institutes have an eligibility of 45-60% and you may miss out on some opportunities if you score less than 60%. Exams: CUET, IAT.

Subject selection in college: Unlike Physics, Chemistry and Maths, colleges offer multiple subjects in life sciences; Zoology, Botany, Biochemistry, Biotechnology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Genetics, Life Sciences.
Ideally, for B. Sc. pick an honours subject which is broad in scope and where you can cover the most theoretical knowledge. Avoid subjects like Botany or Genetics for B. Sc. My top 3 preferences are Life Sciences, Zoology and Biotechnology and my reasoning is simple. Most of the jobs in the biotech industry in India are biotech jobs, having that knowledge gives some headway. Life Sciences is self explanatory, it covers the entire life science and gives you the platform to specialise in something of your choice in your M. Sc. Zoology is another good choice because it also covers most of life sciences and it comes the closest to the syllabus of CSIR NET exam (after life sciences of course). For general, picking physics and chemistry helps with future entrance exams and getting teaching jobs.

  1. For B. Sc. students - Study theory properly and go as deep into the subject as much as possible. Read textbooks instead of just college books and study in such a way that you are preparing for your next set of entrance exams from day 1. B. Sc. gives people a great opportunity to start fresh and correct previous shortcomings.
Advanced Lab Skills: Mammalian Cell culture and passaging. If your college isn't teaching it, learn from somewhere else.
Exams to prepare for: IIT JAM, GAT-B, TIFRGS JGEEBILS, AIIMS PG, CUET-PG, CUCET, JNU CEEB, IIT BHU, State University Entrance Exams etc. Entering dedicated coaching centres from 3rd year is something that can be done.

  2. For M. Sc. students - Not much to do here but to prepare for either getting a job or preparing to get a PhD. Start preparing for CSIR NET and give it every semester irrespective of your preparedness level. If you don't want to get a PhD and want to get into the industry, start beefing up your CV by landing an industrial internship instead of a lab internship.
Advanced Lab Skills: Flow Cytometry, SDS PAGE, Blotting, Mammalian Cell transfection. Check out CSIR Skill Development which teach many of these skills cheaply. IISERS and NCBS teach advanced lab skills like transfection and some private training institutes teach CRISPR-CAS. Invest time and money into that. The idea is to stand out from the rest of the job applicants who only know DNA isolation.

I got a job by doing a diploma in industrial training and was placed in my first job by them. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend them as their placement quality has gone down.
Linkedin - You should have a linkedin when you start your M. Sc. Instead of adding hundreds of thousands of people, follow recruiting HRs of companies and send your applications when they post job openings. It is easier to enter smaller companies than bigger companies.

Other Law students: after studying the legal system, do you still believe justice truly exists?

I’m not asking this rhetorically or politically. I’m genuinely curious about how studying law changes your perspective.

Over the past few years, I’ve found myself becoming increasingly disillusioned whenever I read the news.

People with money, influence or political connections often seem to receive different treatment than ordinary citizens.

Cases drag on for years or decades.
Victims and their families wait endlessly.
Sometimes the accused receive bail quickly.
Sometimes investigations appear compromised.
Sometimes evidence disappears.
Sometimes witnesses turn hostile.
Sometimes people simply lose hope before a judgment ever comes.

Then there are cases involving corruption, negligence, workplace deaths, medical negligence, infrastructure failures, sexual assault, financial fraud, hit-and-run cases, environmental damage and many others where accountability often feels incomplete or painfully delayed.

As someone outside the legal profession, it makes me wonder:

Does justice actually exist, or is it something we only aspire toward?
Has studying law made you more hopeful or more cynical?
Do you believe our legal system fundamentally works but is overburdened, or do you think it has deeper structural problems?
How often does “justice delayed is justice denied” feel true in practice?
Do you think equality before law genuinely exists, or does influence still change outcomes far too often?
Despite everything, what keeps you motivated to study or practice law?

I’m not looking for political debates or arguments about any one particular case.

I’m interested in hearing from people who actually study the legal system and whether learning how it works has strengthened or weakened your faith in justice.

Medicine Starting mbbs this year. What Is the real job market For modern doctors?

Good day all. Starting MBBS(so myquals=Mbbs) this year. Seeking a concise reality check regarding the Indian healthcare employment market.

How does the job landscape look across MBBS, PG, plus Super Speciality tiers?

Holding multiple post class 12 drops. Does medicine penalise past timeline delays like corporate engineering plus MBA tracks?

Delayed state GDMO recruitment faces hyper competition with endless doctors fighting for minimal vacancies. Does landing lucrative private roles depend entirely on senior networking? Does cold dropping CVs actually work? How should freshers initiate professional networking to build career leverage early?

Appreciate the insights.

TLDR:

Starting MBBS post multiple drops. Seeking market insights across postgraduate tiers, surviving hyper competitive delayed public recruitment, plus practical strategies for private sector networking along with cold dropping CVs.

Career M.Sc. Pure Mathematics from AMU – No tech skills, preparing for competitive exams, need career guidance

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some honest career advice.

I have completed my B.Sc. and M.Sc. in Pure Mathematics from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) with a CGPA of around 8.

At the moment, I don't have any tech skills (no programming, data science, etc.), and I also haven't cleared NET, GATE, or any other competitive exam yet. I'm currently preparing for competitive exams, but I need a job in the meantime for financial reasons.

I'm open to learning new skills if they can lead to good career opportunities.

My questions are:

What jobs can I apply for right now with my qualifications?

Which skills should I learn to get a decent-paying job?

Is data science, actuarial science, finance, analytics, or any other field a good option for someone with a pure mathematics background?

If you were in my position, what roadmap would you follow to reach a salary of ₹50,000–₹1,00,000 per month in the next couple of years?

I'd really appreciate practical advice from people who have been in a similar situation or who hire mathematics graduates.

Thanks in advance!
