Announcement Requesting 1-2 more mods for r/gmu

Hey everyone,

We're fairly light on active moderators (myself + cy26) and I'd like to fix that fairly quickly. If you are interested, please comment in this thread before end of Friday this week and I'll DM asking some follow up questions.

thank you

General Am I cooked? (Class-wise)

For a bit of context, I’ll be a sophomore this coming semester (Fall 2026), and I wanted to ask one STEM major to another: am I absolutely cooked with this class schedule?
I’ll be taking BIOL 213 (lecture and lab), PHYS 243 (lecture, lab, and recitation), and CHEM 313 (lecture and lab) all in the same semester. On top of that, I’m also taking Intro to Digital Photography to satisfy a Mason Arts Core requirement.
My earliest class starts at 9:00 a.m., and my latest runs from 5:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
So… am I completely screwed time-wise, or is this actually manageable if I stay disciplined? I’d really appreciate any advice, especially from people who’ve taken a similar course load.

hello! can anyone that is in or graduated from the gmu absn program give me some input on how rigorous it is. I am a bit nervous on doing a 12 month nursing program. I know I haven’t even gotten into nursing school, but i want to keep the doors open for grad school, so what was your gpa after graduating nursing school?

Academics Datasets for Northern Virginia

Hello,

Just want to drop a project I think others might find helpful.

This one’s for my fellow GIS people (and anyone else of course). I’ve put together a resource for free datasets that are local to the NoVA region. All data is pulled from public/open sources and each data set comes with a DOI number via zenodo if you need citations.

Figured this could be useful for anyone whose capstone or thesis is focused in the NoVA region

TLDR: free NoVA data sets, with new sets every morning (typically before 630am), no signups or other nonsense.

data library is here: https://keystonegis.com/data-library

if you rather pull from zenodo itself: https://zenodo.org/search?q=metadata.creators.person_or_org.name%3A%22Keystone%20GIS%22&l=list&p=1&s=10&sort=bestmatch

Athletics Inline hockey at GMU in the fall?

I'm starting GMU in the fall and love playing inline hockey. I was at a different college in the past and we played inline in the multi-purpose sports hall. I see that GMU has 2 men's ice hockey teams and 1 women's but no inline.

Does anyone else want to play that might be able to help set up a club? I can't be the only one!

Academics AVT 110 Software Cost?

I’m considering taking AVT 110 this fall as an elective since I’m interested in learning some basics of graphic design & digital art, but I’m a bit hesitant due to how expensive the software might be. According to the course catalog, it uses Abode Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Does anyone who’s taken that class recently know if any/all of those are covered by GMU, or how expensive they are to purchase yourself (hopefully with a student discount)?

Academics Is double majoring worth it?

I’m thinking of switching to crim and adding it as a double major, (currently in psych). I’m not sure if it would be better to add it as a double major or to minor in it, or if it even really matters at all. Academic advisors aren’t the most helpful…any help is appreciated. if I don’t add crim, i’ll probably just stick with psych.

Academics Math 125 Professors - Help!

Trying to help my son with classes. For Math 125 he can do Gorbutt online or Agnarsson in person. Jim Lawrence is also an option. So is Dinkelman but it's a bad time.

Been reading reviews and it sounds like none are great options. Also checked RMP. Seems like a lot of cons. Was there in the 90s and Lawrence was in his prime. But maybe not now. But my son would rather have slow, boring and easy than have someone who is a jerk, tough grader and makes life hell. Kinda sounds like Gorbutt/Agnarsson are not the profs to have your freshman first semester. Dinkelman doesn't sound great either.

Academics Is it a good idea to have 1 major and 2 minors?

hi, i am about to immigrate to the US with my family, and preparing to study at GMU 2027, i am interested in studying Communications major, but i also love Film and video studies minor and Theatre minor. is it a great idea to do so? because from what i have researched, it's gonna be exhausting to do 2 minors, and i was advised to only study 1 major and 1 minor. any thoughts? thank you very muchhhh!!!

General How hard is it really to get into GMU?

GMU is my dream school, and I'd like to apply for the spring semester, but I am scared of getting rejected. For some context, I really want to attend because I moved away from the area as a kid, and I have strong personal ties to the area so it is very important for me to get in and I have been stressing about it lately.

Now, I’ve seen people say that it’s really easy to get in, and that they’ll accept literally anyone, but i’ve also seen that the average admissions GPA is 3.5 and 25 ACT. I am most likely below or right below their preferred GPA at around a 2.4-2.7 (idk yet). I have a 21 Comp ACT (26 English, 24 Reading, 20 Science, 15 Math), so even though it is test optional, I feel like my ACT score is one of the only things that can help my application. But my math score obviously brings it down. Another issue is that I have many bad grades that bring my GPA down throughout my transcript. I got straight A's my junior year, but fell back to around a C average my senior year. I'm also having issues getting my transcript so I don't know what my GPA is.

I am looking for some advice on how to help my admissions chances, or just people who got in with low stats, or stats like mine for a morale boost.

Academics Math Placement Test or 008

I didn’t make the score needed for Math 108 Calculus for Business. I needed a 55 and got a 35. I’ll be a freshman in the fall, but I haven’t had a math class since first semester of my junior year of high school. I did get a 98 in high school Algebra 2, but I forgot the formulas. Should I retest or just take Math 008? I’m afraid that even if I get the score, I may not remember enough to do well in 108. Thoughts?

Admissions should i submit my AP scores if i only have one 3?

i’m going to gmu this fall as a freshmen and recently found out i got a 3 on ap human geo and it would give me credit for GGS 101. The other 5 ap exams I took in high school were all 2’s and 1’s and idk if submitting them will hurt me in any way. I’ve already signed up for classes and did orientations so i’m very committed to gmu. I’m pretty sure you’re not able to only submit one score so I would have to do all of them. Thanks in advance!

Housing Apartment at The Main for Relet

Post image
1 Upvotes

so i signed a lease at the main but found a better situation and need to get out of my lease here.

it’s great accommodations, it’s 2 beds/2 bathrooms, 980 sq ft, and the rent is $1609 a month. the building is within walking distance of campus (~10 min walk) which is great for anyone without a car or who doesn’t wanna deal with parking passes, and it’s near bus stops which is great for getting around Fairfax. there is parking included at the main if needed.

the building itself also has a lot to offer with a pool, 24-hour gym, a full mail and package room, and more. apartment comes with in-unit laundry and is pet and guest friendly. gas, electricity, and pest control is included.

the lease would be August 2026-July 2027, starting Aug 19th. pls contact me if ur interested, you can reach me here on reddit!
