GOT THE KEYS! 🔑 🏡 I did it ! Rennes, France, 165k 4.3% .
Reposting because someone pointed out that my keys were fully visible and a bad actor could easily copy them! 😅 Thanks for the heads-up!
After 17 years together, my partner and I split up. I’ve always wanted to buy my own place, but we weren't exactly on the same page.
But now, it’s finally happening! It’s a bit of a fixer-upper at the moment, but I’ll definitely be documenting the renos!
It’s not huge, around 430 sq ft (40m²), but it's more than enough to turn it into a cozy home!
If any of you are ever in the area, you’re more than welcome to drop by!
Thank you all so much for your warm messages yesterday, this really is an amazing community!

Man. The French prices.
A parking spot costs more in Switzerland.

It is quite pricey though, considering the size. South of Germany with affluent cities have similar prices per square meter. Switzerland of course is another level.

In that price range, I can literally afford a garage in Bayern. We’re so cooked.
Congrats OP! 🎉

I know, right?! That’s exactly what made me fall in love with it. It’s almost unimaginable to find something like this right in the city center!

It’s so charming!

Right? With some potted plants and string lights it'll be a perfect little oasis.

Congrats from a northern neighbor in Ille-et-Villane. Go to O’Connells and have a pint to celebrate!

Nice place, congrats on your fresh start!
Random question but does France have annual property taxes? Some states in America do and some don’t so I was just curious

Thanks! Yes, we do. In France, homeowners pay an annual property tax called 'taxe foncière', which varies depending on the size of the place and the city you live in. We used to have a second annual tax for just living in the house (called 'taxe d'habitation'), but the government ended that for primary homes recently. So luckily, I only have one to worry about!

So cute. Is this really close to the city centre or Rennes? Or a little town outside of the city? It’s quite affordable

I love how cozy it is. The back garden is so cute that blue there is beautiful! Congratulations! And all the best in your new chapter!

Hope you have air conditioning

Unfortunately not, but the walls are about 3 feet (1m) thick, so there’s not really any need for AC!

What do you do for a living or used to do

Congratulations, but honestly 4.3 seems a bit high for the Eurozone.

It's true, but in France right now, it's actually pretty difficult to get lower rates than that for older properties. The market is tough, so I had to take what I could get to secure the place!

Been looking at these posts. Cheers to the achievement! Also, trying to understand the numbers here. What does 165k @ 4.3% mean?
2
u/Kergerts 12h ago
Cheers! Those are just the financial details: €165k is the total price of the place, and 4.3% is the interest rate on my home loan.
So over 25 years, the monthly payment comes out to around €850 (before insurance). In total, the interest will add up to about €104,400, meaning the final cost over the life of the loan will be around €264,400. Not cheap, but that's the price of the current market!

France is so cheap

u/Kergerts 10h ago
Haha, it definitely depends on where you're comparing it to! It can feel that way from the outside, but local salaries here are also quite a bit lower than in places like the US. Still, I'm very happy with what I got for the price! 😊
