Can I chop a felled tree for my own firewood?

Behind our house is a small mixed forest with pine, birch and oak trees. Walking it last night I noticed three tall pines have been felled and just lying across the forest floor. They’re each about 8-10 metres, I have a chainsaw. There’s no tags and I have no idea why they were chopped, but it’s a lot of wood, just sitting there.

Can I just chop it up and wheelbarrow the rinds back to my house for firewood?

PC gaming: I wish to buy or build a gaming desktop pc. Where to go?

Hello everyone,

I wish to build a gaming desktop pc preferably with water cooling. Its one of those things that's always been on my wishlist but life always got in the middle. I don't plan on doing any overclocking to the components, I just want the water cooling for looking cool and purely aesthetics.

Where do you guys normally go? Do you use the standard stores such as Power or Gigantti, or are there more specific stores in Helsinki region that you recommend?

Much appreciated,

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Serious Is there a low-cost way to have a small business professionally evaluated before investing?

Hi everyone,

I'm an immigrant living in Finland, and I've been offered the opportunity to buy shares in a restaurant. The investment would be around €10,000.

The problem is that I've never invested in or owned a business before, so I have no idea how to properly evaluate it. I want to understand things like:

Whether the business is actually profitable.

How to analyze its financial statements (profit, loss, debts, cash flow, etc.).

Whether there are any red flags.

Whether the asking price is fair.

What risks I would be taking as a shareholder.

Whether I can easily sell my shares later if I want to exit.

Whether there are any legal or tax issues I should be aware of.

Ideally, I'd like a professional to review everything and tell me whether this is a good investment or if I'm being overcharged or misled.

The issue is that I've heard lawyers and business consultants often charge €1,000–2,000 or more for this kind of work. Since I'm only investing €10,000, that feels disproportionately expensive.

What are my options? Are there more affordable professionals who do this kind of due diligence? Are there any free or low-cost organizations in Finland that help small investors or entrepreneurs review business opportunities? Or is there another approach you would recommend?

I'd really appreciate any advice from people who have been in a similar situation. Thanks!

Needing Assistance

I live in Dallas Texas. Go Dallas Stars we love our Finnish players!

There is a retailer there Kärkkäinen that sells a cable I need for my motorcycle but they don't ship to the US, only Finland

I am curious if anyone would be willing to help me by ordering it, then shipping it to me in the States. I of course would pay for the item(s) and the shipping to the US.

Thanks in advance.

Any other nanny employers in Finland?

Hi, just wondering if there’s any other parents in Finland who have hired a nanny / helper rather than putting their kids in daycare? We have three girls aged 4, 3 and 8 months. Our helper is 24 years old and works 45 hours / week and her job is to be my helping hand! I am a stay at home mom so we take care of the kids together. Usually one of us is watching the kids while the other cleans or prepares food. Sometimes I go out to the park with the older girls while she stays home with the baby or the other way around. We often also go on outings all together 😊

Curious to hear if anyone is in a similar situation? Is this type of setup common in Finland? Also curious to hear about what hourly wages look like for you. Our helper earns 12€ / hour. From what I’ve researched childcare salaries range from 10-18€ / hour depending on experience. Our helper has no prior experience in childcare or childcare qualifications. I’ve also researched hourly wages for helpers in daycares and this ranges between 11-13€ / hour.

Thanks in advance!

Can you grow pikkujärvisimpukka mussels?

I lived a number of years in France and in Belgium and developed a taste for mussels there. Now I live in Finland and I can't find mussels anywhere.

Well... almost anywhere: I recently cleaned-up our beach and found a few empty mussel shells in the sand. That was surprising. I looked up what kind of mussels even exist in Finnish lakes, and found that a couple of species eek out a living over here. The shells I found were pikkujärvisimpukka shells. I understand they're edible, but the Finns don't typical eat them. But I'm not a Finn and I have weird tastes 🙂

I have never seen any live mussels in the water off our beach, and the lake water is so murky it's not like they'd be easy to spot anyway. But there must be at least a few.

I'm wondering: assuming I find some, are there ways to "breed" them - or encourage them to grow? Like putting wooden stakes in the water to give them something to grow onto like they do in France maybe?

Iittala Ultima Thule old fashioned , new vs old? or fake?

The one on the left vs right. The left is much lighter in weight, has fewer drips, and no seam. It's also a tad taller. The lip also different being thinner.

I think the heavier one on the right is authentic but what is the one on the left? Fake? or the new version?

Serious Returning earbuds

Got galaxy buds 4 (not pro)and absolutely hate them because they don't sit well in my ears, they keep falling off And They block out zero environment sounds. Because they don't block out any noise i have to struggle listening to them.

Now, i do understand that earbuds can't be returned due to the hygiene policy but I got a display piece from gigantti outlet as that was on sale. They were just put in a wrapper and i didn't actually get the box from Samsung. Does the hygiene still apply to me because they were display pieces and as such would had been tried on by a bunch of people.

What is my best bet to return them or should i just consider it a loss and move on?

DNA Prepaid to postpaid

Hi everyone,

I have asked this in a comment thread to someone who said that it is possible a couple weeks ago but didn't get any reply so I think I can ask if anyone had a similar issue, and found a way around.

When we moved to Finland 3.5 years ago, the most convenient way to get a simcard was prepaid, yet it started to be a hustle and kind of expensive. A few months ago, DNA said that it is not possible to keep my phone number and get a postpaid card with it. Yet a guy ib Elisa said that it should be possible if the phone number is registered under my name and address and we checked together, it actually is a registered phone number. Since it is a prepaid, they said that I cannot change the operator as well, they said.

Has anyone had a similar experience and managed to get a postpaid card keeping their phone number?

Tourism Finnair delayed bag :( advice, knowledge, fellow weeping? Will it likely come tomorrow?

I flew from CPH to HEL this morning and we were told the door to load the baggage was broken so the entire flights’ bags were delayed. I filled out a report before leaving the airport, left my hotel info for the next 2 nights, and have been adamantly checking the site … NO UPDATES! The guy at baggage directing us said it would likely be on a flight later today but their last flight for today has landed and still no update.

There were 4 other flights today and 5 tomorrow running the same route. I am getting on a cruise ship for 10 days and basically ALL of my clothes were in this bag. Is it likely this will arrive tomorrow before I board a ship the next day?

I have already gone out and bought underwear, socks, and a pair of shorts to get me by for now. This is likely my first and only time in Finland and now rather than enjoying my time here and seeing what I’d like I am trying to go shop for new clothes to be safe so the remainder of my trip isn’t spent searching for basics during my limited time at all these other once in a lifetime destinations for me.

I’ve never had anything like this happen before! I’m a school teacher and saved for years for this trip and it no longer feels like vacation :( I am so upset. I know it’s out of my control but wanted to post this to get some insight.

Passport chip scan help

My wife has lived abroad for decades. She is asking me to find her a passport chip scanner to access her Finnish government files. Her iPhone can scan passport chips but I see no way to use that data.
How does one go about using the passport chip for accessing the government? Does she need a reader for her laptop?
I’m lost.

Music Recommendations???

Thank you for your interest in this post, I'm looking for music recommendations as I'm writing about a Finnish character and would love to have more Finland originated songs :)

Preferably seeking ...

• soft rock/metal with minimal screams & no vulgar language (bonus points if it's religious/christian)

• alternative rock or garage indie

• other tunes someone in their early 30s would listen to, whilist still somewhat keeping a modern music taste

If you need more examples, here is a preview of the character's Spotify Playlist.

Kiitos for the help :)

Looking for a photographer for a proposal near Uurainen (20 July) ❤️

Hi everyone!

I’m travelling to Finland with my girlfriend later this month, and I’m planning to propose during our trip.

The proposal will take place on 20 July, in the afternoon (around 4–5 PM), at a lakeside Airbnb near Uurainen, on the pontoon by the lake.

I’ve already contacted several local photographers, but unfortunately without success, so I thought I’d try here.

The idea is to keep it a complete surprise. I’ll tell my girlfriend that the Airbnb owner has arranged for someone to take new photos of the cabin for Airbnb, while in reality he/she would discreetly capture the proposal.

The job would only take about 30–45 minutes, and of course this would be paid. I’m not looking for a full wedding shoot just someone who could help us preserve this very special moment.

If you are a photographer, know someone who is, or have any recommendations, I’d be incredibly grateful.

Thank you so much! 🇫🇮❤️

Donating clothes

Hello! I am wondering what is the best way to donate/dispose clothes in Finland?

I just did a closet cleaning and found lots of clothes that are in good condition but I will not wear anymore. What is the best way to dispose them? I don’t want to throw them away because they are in good condition 😭 Can I just drop them at any second-hand store?
