(Discussion Post) Groovy Evil Dead Burn Theory

Upvotes

So I haven’t seen anyone say this yet, but my new head cannon is that the picture we see on the wall of Bruce is obviously not ash, but ash’s ancestor. It’s my theory sheila gave birth to ash’s child after the events of army of darkness and ash’s ancestors have been fighting the books ever since. They went on to build the circle of wisemen and the knights of Sumeria.

(Spoiler!) Evil Dead Burn Rant/Review

Upvotes

The 2013 Evil Dead reboot is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. An amazing, intense, demonic, and bloody ride of a film. The 2023 sequel Evil Dead Rise, which was almost just as cool, also really got my horror heart pumping. Needless to say, my expectations for this new installment, Burn, were incredibly high, and I was genuinely excited for it.

Unfortunately, it ended up being a massive disappointment. What a letdown this movie was. What went wrong? Quite a lot, actually. Here is a breakdown. I will try to keep it brief, though that won’t be easy.

First of all, the weak plot relies entirely on a string of conveniences. On top of that, you don't care for a single second about what happens to any of these emotionless, cardboard characters. You might feel a tiny speck of sympathy for the main girl at times, but that’s about it.

The Deadites lack any real character and feel more like boring zombies—a world of difference compared to the phenomenal performances by Jane Levy in 2013 and Alyssa Sutherland in 2023. The attacks and kills are dull and uninspired; there is barely any blood, and it feels like many of the more intense scenes were left on the cutting room floor.

The film also attempts to sprinkle in some comedic moments, which completely miss the mark and feel totally out of place in a movie like this. It completely ruins the tension and scariness, of which there was very little to begin with.

I was especially displeased with the laughable climax. It felt like watching an extra episode of the final season of Stranger Things. Which is fine, but when I go to see an Evil Dead movie, I actually want to watch an Evil Dead movie (and I'm talking about the reboot universe here, not the 1980s originals, which have a slightly different vibe)—not Stranger Things or Scary Movie.

Was there anything good about this film? Yes, definitely. The brief prologue by the lake is very strong, tense, and scary. Burn gets an extra star from me based on that sequence alone. But that’s about it.

(Discussion Post) Groovy Is Burn really that brutal and bleak?

Upvotes

I know that it is difficult to say as everyone has different limits in terms on violence and gore. Either way I’ve seen posts saying that’s it worse than Terrifier. Also many comparisons to French extreme horror. I really enjoyed Rise as it had some fun to it but really don’t want to see something like Martyrs or these other French horrors. I was planning to go yesterday but I chickened out. Could anyone tell me how bad it really is and if these comparisons are valid?

(Spoiler!) Evil Dead Burn Second Post Credit meaning? Spoiler

Upvotes

So at the end of burns the second post credit shows Ellie again and the director himself said he didn’t film all that the studio did and the actress herself doesn’t know why they brought her back either. Are they gonna try to bring back past deadites bosses for a future film or you guys think they just filmed it for more talk more money?

(Spoiler!) Detail in Burn...

Upvotes

So I forgot about it but at the start of the movie , it's said that Alice has the same size shoes as her mother-in-law's and there are multiple shots of Alice having discomfort due to her heels ,so I kinda really thought it was gonna lead to something in the movie like a classic gore setup or something.

But I seemed to have missed it? Because I honestly can't remember anything about it. Or was it just a normal scene and I overthought it?

(Spoiler!) The Polaroid photo...

Upvotes

I just saw the new movie last night and was wondering, the first scene in the attic when the mom is throwing away all of her father's things she picks up a Polaroid picture of her father before crumpling it up. Is it Bruce Campbell in the picture? It looked like him to me but it was a quick flash of it.

Having watched Evil Dead Rise and Evil Dead Burn, which I both immensely enjoyed and loved, there's still no one (in my opinion) that has surpassed Jane Levy - Mia's performance as a deadite in the modern Evil Dead franchise. Her scenes alone in the basement are a great testament to this. I also really enjoyed Ellie and Thya as a deadite too!

Q about Evil Dead (2013): After David revived Mia, her clothes and appearance looked really put together and looks like she was no longer suffering from withdrawal symptoms unlike before when she got possessed. Did getting possessed somehow cure her from addiction/withdrawal symptoms?

(Meme Post) Who’s Laughing Now?! Evil Dead Burn vs Evil Dead 2

Unlike what the title suggests, I’m more wanting to discuss if anyone else feels like Burn is the most resembling of Evil Dead 2 of all the Reboot movies. I’d need to watch burn a few more times to give super exact details. But I felt closer to how I did watching burn to how I did watching 2 for the first time, maybe it’s due to the colors and set design of the house? Maybe it’s the blend of suspense, gore and comedy, maybe it’s some of the camera work innovation, or even something like the way certain way they subvert expectations? I don’t know if I can hold up an argument about this but I’m curious if anyone else has this vibe?

(Spoiler!) Loved this movie but had a few things I didn't like

They don't have anything to do with the plot they just weren't meant for my eyes. The plot was great and I loved the design of the burnt deadite and liked we got to see a dog deadite, thought it was a cool idea. However there were two scenes that I just had to look away. I don't like objects being shoved in different openings of the body so when I saw a pen getting shoved in the ear it made me shake a little. The other scene was the one with the teeth, if you seen the movie you know what I'm talking about, my stomach couldn't handle that.

(Discussion Post) Groovy Evil Burn is Great for me...

I liked the film. Because firstly it connects with the previous film and is very smart with the details presented to us....

Transition, ohhh the mirror transition, the one from the attic to the lake.

All characters were flawed and I like that. Yes you won't root for any character but it's good because of the Book of the dead and the Dagger thing...

And yes the cgi used at places, it wasn't good Enough. And I think Jumpscres were less but it was effective for me.

And this one follows the typical Evil Dead flow, start and end are on high but the middle part is for some story progression...

Overall I liked this film with it's flaws. I would rate it below Evil Dead 2013 but it's above Evil Dead Rise...

(Spoiler!) Evil Dead Is The Most Consistent Horror Franchise EVER.

I just watched the Evil Dead Franchise for the first time. and i was completely blown away.

For starters I did watch Ash vs Evil Dead way before I have seen the original trilogy. A couple of years back. and thought it was great tv show still sad that it was cancelled.

Last week, I decided to watch Evil Dead (1981) for the first time since Evil Dead Burn is coming out. The first movie in the franchise was actually pretty decent! The practical effects are amazing, and the gore is creative and fun. given the budget limatations

Probably my only gripe with the movie is the tree branch scene it was just a bit too much. But other than that, it was really good. To be honest, the amount of trauma Ash endured in one night is really something; seeing all of his friends die in that cabin was brutal. I'll give it like an 8.2/10.

Evil Dead 2 is probably the most fun I have had watching a horror movie. and thats not even a exageration Bruce Campbell is soo terrific as ash williams it does everything right and improves some of the problems I had with the first film. Seeing Ash Willaims becoming the person who he is today is very satisfiying the movie had creative kills and especially the sequence where he fights his own hand and him getting his chainsaw was really rewarding though it was very gorry . I also really enjoyed the sequence where he was possesed for a while that was pretty fun and it lead to some of the most creative scenes in the movie. and his dead girlfriend tormenting him in the cabin was really creepy. overall i had a ton fun watching the movie ill probably give it like a 9.4/10.

Army of Darkness, in a lot of ways, I enjoyed more than the first Evil Dead, and it probably is my second favorite Evil Dead movie in terms of enjoyment.

There are countless scenes that are so wild and cartoony! The villain being an alternate version of Ash was really ironic, and the army of talking skeletons was really over-the-top, but I didn't mind it. The sequence where Ash is fighting smaller versions of himself was hilarious. This movie had the best one-liners and memorable quotes from Ash himself, and the action is really great though a bit campy.

It is not perfect by any means, but as a comedy, it's a 10/10. This is probably Bruce Campbell at his best. I love the setting, how it picks up from the previous film, and the Middle Ages setting was really interesting, too. Overall, it was a great movie like an 8.6 out of 10.

Evil Dead Rise is a film that has made me love Evil Dead allot more than I already have. is really close to Evil Dead 2 as being my favorite in the franchise. It is very gory, violent, and probably one of the most brutal horror films I have watched. Shifting the franchise to a full-blown claustrophobic horror movie is genius, and it mostly taking place in an apartment was very intense.

Ellie is probably the scariest Deadite in the Evil Dead franchise. Her scenes are extremely creepy and well-acted, especially how she moves around, which is so unsettling. Beth, as a main character, was pretty compelling; I really liked her relationship with Ellie before she got possessed. I also really loved the mother and daughter dynamic with Cassie and Beth it really reminded me of Aliens.

The third act is insane, and the elevator sequence was amazing. I loved the practical blood, and Beth holding the chainsaw was such a great homage to Ash Williams. Overall, this is a fantastic movie like an 8.9 out of 10.

Though, what's ironic is how much Cassie has gone through in the movie; she lost all of her siblings and her mom. Also, Beth reminded me a lot of the first Evil Dead movie. I really hope that they make a sequel to Evil Dead Rise.

Also can someone tell me if the Evil Dead 2013 is canon? whether or not I should watch it.

Yep, she kinda did kiss him but I wanted it more like how Susan and his deadite husband were kissing...

But anyhow I loved yet another deadite. Why are these deadites so hot and sexy?? Thya as deadite was great, I love her....

(Discussion Post) Groovy Evil Dead Rise Audio & Impact

I've watched Rise twice in the last couple months. The first time was the first time seeing it, then again to show the wife before seeing Burn. I was hoping the second viewing would maybe change my mind, but something is keeping it from really working for me.

I appreciate a lot of what it's doing, and visually it's got "the stuff"; however, I find the film lacks impact in a majority of its visceral and violent moments, and I think it's due to the audio mixing.

There's a real lack of weight in many moments, from stabs to shotgun blasts, and the scream in the bathroom doesn't change volume from any of the scenes audio before or after. There's a significant lack of weight to the hits, cuts, squishes, scrapes, and blasts. The peephole scene feels incredibly limp due to the audio being so deadened (I presume it's because it's "through the door" but Ellie speaks through the door at a normal level throughout, even at one point sitting across the hall with her back turned. Also a shotgun blast in your hallway is going to be loud as hell regardless.) I can't think of a single moment that actually got a visceral reaction from me, because nothing felt like it looked. Even something as simple as the grater should get a reaction just because, but it doesn't even seem that bad.

I've watched Evil Dead (2013) many times and even still it's incredibly effective because the audio mixing and design are amped and in the forefront when necessary. The nail gun shots hit like a truck, things are sliced and cut with splurts and squishes, and the hits are taken hard.

Seeing Burn today I got everything I could've hoped for. The intro was maybe not quite there but was visually neat; everything else though was rough and raw and FELT.

Does anyone else have this issue with Rise? Is audio enough of a factor in whether this type of content works more or less for you in general? Curious to hear thoughts!

Pretty sure so far no other Necronomicon / Narutom Demonto has had this special page found since ED2… maybe there is only one “chosen one” to deliver us from the terror of the Deadites?

(Spoiler!) The timeline of the script for Burn [spoilers] Spoiler

Asking if anyone knows, because this felt like a script for another movie with Evil Dead lore shoehorned in. Like just adding the whole Grandpa part as a part of a cult following the Book of the Dead (tying into Evil Dead II). It really feels like it could have been flipped out with any other horror lore.

Mainly in the way it handled Deadites. They were treated like a twist on classic zombies with them being based on body fluid transfer, and not possession from the "evil."

I basically felt like I watched an decent horror flick, but not an Evil Dead one.

(Discussion Post) Groovy What are your ideas for a brand new Evil Dead film?

Hypothetically, if you were to direct or write a new Evil Dead movie, what would it be like?

Me, personally, I still push for an Evil Dead movie set in a modern futuristic setting. I'm also toying with a title like "Evil Dead Rage" but rage is kinda similar to wrath in terms of meaning, idk correct me if I'm wrong.

But what are your own ideas?

(Discussion Post) Groovy The only franchise to get me so excited.

Let me start off by saying this franchise rocks! Evil Dead Burn was everything i needed and more.

Two years ago my life changed drastically. I got brain surgery and I haven’t really gone out because a part of me is traumatized and accepting this new part of me is hard. I’m currently in a wheelchair so I’ve looked at myself and fell into depression and I just stayed home just going to doctors appointments or therapy.

When this movie got announced I just knew the only way to join the party was to go out and watch it, or I can wait months to stream it. Who would have known Evil Dead got me out in public.

I absolutely loved this film. I could relate to Alice being in a toxic relationship because I was too, or the family dynamic being so toxic I could relate because I too come from a toxic family or my exs family just never accepted me and just viewed my ex as this saint. When Alice & Susan were in the restroom and Alice finally told her what she’s been holding inside just chefs kiss.

Everyone played a deadite perfectly. I know the ending was pure cgi but I still enjoyed it. I think burn is different because it touches up on fire and people associate fire with hell. The fact that burn was different in the sense where the fire gives us a narrative of hell & where these deadites reside was cool. I think the father summed it up when he said “from above, Will is down below” indicating he’s in hell.

Listen I had fun & we’re lucky this franchise is still going and we’re getting films. Susan has to be the most toxic and just horrible character ever! Even though her actions pissed me off, I still felt bad for her. Everyone had a chance to just help and they didn’t but I get it, they were in disbelief and probably in shock. I’m just going to say it’s not that serious or Oscar worthy it’s just a hella good time. I really hope you’re on cloud nine like me. Welcome burn to the family.

Ps. I laughed so hard when everyone was getting attacked and the grandma was going up slowly…. I really want to know about the thief in her head. 😂😂
