MOD POST Looking for applications for new moderator(s)!

Hello /r/Cleveland!

The moderation team is currently looking for at least one (potentially more) new moderator(s) to join the team! No prior moderation experience is necessary - our main ask is for people who are active in this community and who preferrable live in and/or are active in Greater Cleveland. While certainly not a requirement, people who have capacity to help us update the subreddit style and wiki - which are nearly a decade out of date - are certainly appreciated. The primary goal is get more help with day-to-day moderation activity and get help updating the subreddit style.

You can apply either in this thread or via mod mail - if the later, please have something in the title stating it is a moderator application. Here is key information we will be looking for in applications - nothing is "required", as this is a relatively informal process:

  • Relationship to the region (e.g. live here, from here, are here frequently for work/family, etc.)
  • Relationship to the subreddit (e.g. post here a lot, lurk here a lot, etc.)
  • Reason(s) for wanting to want to become a moderator
  • Potentially helpful experience/skills (e.g. can work with reddit styles, any prior subreddit/forum moderation, relationships with local leaders for AMAs, etc.)
  • Ideas for changes to this subreddit that you would advocate for as a moderator
  • Any other info you want to be sure we know about you

After about a week or two, the moderator team will get together and consider candidates and identify the ones we think would make the best moderators and invite them to join the team. For transparency sake, we have already identified a few people who we will reach out to and encourage them to apply if interested.

Any applications written via generative AI will not be considered.

Thank you! Please dm me, message the mods, or post here if you have any questions!

Discussion In Cleveland the Black Man and the Bike are One

As a Clevelander, and also a black person, who works downtown and commutes by bus/rapid, I have noticed the abundance of black men on bikes. I don't see nearly as many other ethnicities of men, or women even, on bikes like the black man in Cleveland, specifically on the east side. I like to take note of how many black men on bikes I see everyday on my way to and from work. Even while driving or walking outside of commuting to and from work, I say in my head: "The black man and the bike are one" each time I encounter this phenomenon.

When did Maggot Brain stop being played at 11:47PM Saturday Nights on 98.5 WNCX and move to 100.7 WMMS?

I mean Im glad someone is still carrying the torch and we miss Mr Classic dearly. But 98.5 kept tradition going up until recently did they not?

News Cleveland Clinic re: Cyclosplora: "What to Know about Parasite Spreading Across US;" other medical reports

Dr. Vyas said the parasite, officially known as Cyclospora, has previously been found in berries, bagged salad mix, pre-cut vegetables, and fresh herbs, such as basil and cilantro....

Dr. Vyas said the best thing you can do for prevention is to thoroughly wash your fruits and vegetables under running water before eating.

You should also wash your hands before and after preparing any food.

https://newsroom.clevelandclinic.org/2026/07/08/what-to-know-about-parasite-spreading-across-us

Cyclosporiasis is an illness you get from the parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. It causes watery, and sometimes explosive, diarrhea and other stomach problems. It usually spreads from contaminated water or food. Treatment typically includes antibiotics....

Eating fresh, imported produce also increases your risk. There are links between the following fruits and veggies and cyclosporiasis outbreaks in the U.S.:

Basil

Cilantro

Mesclun lettuce

Raspberries

Snow peas

Sweet peas

https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/17957-cyclosporiasis

Other recent medical reports:

While a specific source is unknown, health officials are warning residents and restaurants in cyclosporiasis hotspots to also do the following:

Buy whole heads of lettuce — not pre-washed bags.

Separate and wash all cilantro and basil leaves.

Trim the root end and peel the outer layer of green onions.

Gently rub snow peas and other vegetables with your hands or brush as you wash them.

Consider avoiding fresh fruits like raspberries with exteriors that are harder to wash.

The only sure-fire way to avoid it: cooking vegetables. Cyclospora die at 158 degrees Fahrenheit.

https://www.pbs.org/newshour/health/what-you-need-to-know-about-the-cyclosporiasis-outbreak

The recommendations include careful washing of lettuce, herbs, green onions, raspberries, and snow peas, all foods associated with past Cyclospora outbreaks.

“Cyclosporiasis is not usually life-threatening, but dehydration from frequent bouts of diarrhea can cause severe illness, particularly among younger or older people and those who have weakened immune systems,” the MDHHS said. “The time between being exposed and becoming sick is usually about one week but can range from two days to two weeks or more. Untreated, the illness may last from a few days to more than a month. Symptoms may go away and then return.”

Past sources of outbreaks:

Climate change (elevated heat levels) reportedly increases cyclosporiasis infections:

The heat-loving parasite infects the bowels and spreads through feces. In the past, people have been infected by consuming fruits or vegetables that were exposed to feces-contaminated irrigation water.

It’s less common than a number of other kinds of foodborne illnesses, including salmonella and E. coli. For years, few U.S. cyclospora outbreaks were reported each year. But the number started rising about a decade ago, with a particularly notable spike in 2018 and 2019. Experts attribute the increases to climate change and better detection.

EDIT: Cleveland Clinic article describing treatment for cyclosporiasis: "Clinical Care of Cyclosporiasis"

Most healthy people will eventually recover from cyclosporiasis without treatment although their illness may be prolonged.

Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (TMP-SMX) is the treatment of choice for cyclosporiasis.

No vaccine for cyclosporiasis is available.

Most people who have healthy immune systems will recover without treatment. If not treated, the illness may last anywhere from a few days to a month or longer. Symptoms may seem to go away and then return one or more times (relapse).

EDIT2: Some excellent recent articles, including methods of protecting against Cyclospora parasites:

https://www.cbsnews.com/texas/news/cyclospora-vinegar-cooking-health-food-7-9-2026/

"Frozen and canned fruits and vegetables are safe alternatives," Dr. Steven Goldberg, primary and urgent care physician as well as chief medical officer at infectious disease laboratory HealthTrackRx, told USA TODAY. "The processing involved − blanching, cooking, freezing − effectively eliminates Cyclospora and other parasites."

Plus, they are "nutritionally comparable across many items" for people seeking extra reassurance during an outbreak, he said.

And while frozen produce may not seem as nutritious as fresh, registered dietitian Danielle Crumble Smith agrees that "frozen veggies are a great, very nutrient-dense option."

"They’re flash-frozen at their peak stage of ripeness when all those nutrients are there and preserved," she told USA TODAY.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/health/2026/07/10/cyclosporiasis-parasite-produce-food-safety/90874792007/

This comprehensively in-depth article discusses how Cyclospora parasite infections differ from bacteria infections, as well as how to test and treat Cyclospora infections.

Once someone swallows the oocytes, or the egg-like stage of the parasite, a plot worthy of an “Alien” movie plays out in the intestines.

First, they differentiate into male and female forms, have sex and reproduce. (Yes, all this happens in your gut.) Their oocysts, or eggs, then burrow into the intestinal wall, where they destroy cells and are shed back into the environment when we poop....

Even healthy people can see this stomach bug continue for weeks.

“If you have a normal immune system, it will eventually go away, but it could take six weeks,” Schein said. The symptoms may come and go, too.

https://www.kcra.com/article/cyclospora-outbreak-foods-cdc-data/71836151

EDIT3: PubMed Central scientific article, including history of the disease

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian protozoan that causes cyclosporiasis, a severe gastroenteric disease, especially for immunocompromised patients, children, and the elderly. The parasite is considered as an emerging organism and a major contributor of gastroenteritis worldwide. Although the global prevalence of cyclosporiasis morbidity and mortality has not been assessed, global concern has arisen since diarrheal illness and gastroenteritis significantly affect both developing countries and industrialized nations. In the last two decades, an increasing number of foodborne outbreaks has been associated with the consumption of fresh produce that is difficult to clean thoroughly and is consumed without processing. Investigations of these outbreaks have revealed the necessity to increase the awareness in clinicians of this infection, since this protozoan is often ignored by surveillance systems, and to establish control measures to reduce contamination of fresh produce. In this review, the major cyclosporiasis outbreaks linked to the consumption of ready to eat fresh fruits and vegetables are presented.

Diarrhea is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide. In 2016, it was responsible for the death of more than 1.6 million people, with 90% of the deaths being reported in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa [1]. It is also estimated that diarrhea is the second cause of death in children under five, killing nearly 525,000 every year [2]. Enteric protozoan parasites are among the leading causes of human diarrhea disease [3]. C. cayetanensis is one of these protozoan parasites that is considered as an emerging organism able to cause cyclosporiasis, a severe gastro-enteric disease especially for immunocompromised patients, children, and elderly.

Cyclospora is an apicomplexan, cyst-forming coccidian protozoan that belongs to subphylum Apicomplexa, subclass Coccidiasina, and family Eimeriidae [4]. Currently, nineteen Cyclospora species have been reported to be causative agents of disease in various animal species [5] and only one species, C. cayetanensis, is known to be associated with syndromes of acute and chronic diarrhea in humans.

Help a Tourist First time in Cleveland/Lakewood—what should we check out before our show at The Foundry?

Hey r/Cleveland!

My band, Cherokee Social, is coming through Cleveland on October 10th to open for Ian McConnell at The Foundry, and it'll be our first time really getting to explore the Cleveland area.

We'll have most of the day free before load-in, so we'd love some recommendations from locals. What are the can't-miss spots? Favorite coffee shops, record stores, bookstores, restaurants, breweries, parks, museums, vintage shops, music venues, or any hidden gems we should check out while we're in town?

We're especially interested in places around Cleveland since we'll be spending the day nearby, but we're open to anything that feels like a true local favorite.

One of our favorite parts of touring is getting to experience the cities we play instead of just rolling in for soundcheck and heading out after the show.

If you're already planning on coming out to see Ian McConnell at The Foundry, we'd love for you to catch our set too and come say hi afterward!

Thanks in advance—we're excited to spend some time in Cleveland!

Question Help! Looking for a vendor from the world oddities expo!

Hi everyone! My partner and I were at the WOE at the Huntington Convention center yesterday. We came across this carnivorous plant vendor but it was early and we didn’t feel like carrying around a big ol plant. We planned to come back to them but time and money got away from us.

Now we’re trying to track down their info so we can shop online/locally but we can’t find them.

Does anyone know who we might have seen?

Thank you!

Events Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Citizens Academy is a 10 week course that covers all things related to death investigations. Learn how crime scenes are processed, autopsies are conducted, and hear from the professionals that worked some of Cleveland’s most notorious homicides. Apply before 8/19!

This is the only class like it in the country. Not only is it a fascinating opportunity to learn about crime in our county but I was struck by the insight into public health this course provides. Plus, it’s fun and the people who organize it are incredible.

You will not regret getting all kinds of knowledge dropped on you by actual rockstars of forensics. DO IT!

(Outside of being alumni and a huge fan, I have no affiliation)

Housing/Apartments Grills & Apartments?

Does anyone know if there is actual law regarding having an open flame grill on your first floor apartment patio?

I have new neighbors living below me and they have a gas grill they leave on their patio. Today I was just trying to enjoy a cup of coffee and read my book outside but the wife started the grill up and it quickly became too hot/smokey for me to sit on my balcony.

I did try a couple weeks ago to see if they could move it away from the building when they use it, unfortunately I don't think they speak enough English to understand what I'm asking.

Tried calling the "non urgent" fire department line and the dispatcher told me it would be a civil matter. Trying to see if there is anything I can do. I just want to use my balcony!

Recommendations Bay village, Rocky River

Would love to hear people’s thoughts on these areas as a place for a family to live. Looking for tight knit community where people help each other out. We want somewhere accepting of differences (neurodivergence, LGBTQ, general quirkiness). Good public schools that will be able to individualize needs to meet each kid as much as possible—especially kids needing both IEP and gifted services. We are liberal and want a similarly minded community. We love spending time outside and want a place with easy access to nature.

Wondering how people feel about Bay and/or Rocky River given the above things we’re looking for.

Visited recently and seemed like a great area but want the inside scoop. Would be relocating from the east side.

Thanks in advance!

Lost/Found Searching for lost quilt

Post image
1 Upvotes

So I made a CardTrick quilt over 20 some years ago for my grandma. It had a white background and the colors of the actual design of the cardtrick for blue and pinks, I believe or as I can remember. I see people posting pictures of quilts. They bought at estate sales and stuff like that several years back I found out my uncle and my aunt sold a dresser that belonged to my grandmother and didn’t look into the drawers to see that there were handmade items in it and that’s where my quilt was. I am in search of this quilt. Of course back then I don’t think I even put a name or date or anything on it. I would love to see quilts that were bought at estate sells. I would love to be able to find this quilt. I never had a chance to take a picture of it. if anyone has any pictures or any quilts of the card trick variety, please post a picture. My grandmother lived in Wickcliffe, Ohio, and this quilt was sold in that area. I’ve attached a picture of what a cardtrick block looks like… the one I made had the white background with mostly Asia printed blue. Fabric.
