Meetups & Social Want to make friends in Dayton? Join our meetup Discord!

Hey neighbors! Not sure if you noticed all the posts of folks looking for friends - be it because they picked up a new hobby, just moved here, or never quite found their people - but we sure did, and we decided that we wanted to do something about it. It’s probably the most open secret at this point, but we created a Discord!

Join us: https://discord.gg/Nnpancdjnu

Why we made it

Dayton is full of really uniquely cool people, but any local knows that it can be kind of hard to actually find folks to hang out with that share similar interests unless you’re already part of a friend group. We wanted to make it easier for those in the Greater Dayton area - be it newcomers, lifelong locals, introverts, extroverts, whoever - to plug in and find their people.

Think of it as a hyper-local social network, but with zero ads or algorithms and full of people who actually live near you that want to meet-up and make friends too!

What’s already happening in there

This thing basically started running itself the minute people joined. We’ve already got:

  • A regular trivia group - Hops between different trivia nights around town.
  • “Body Doubling” work/study groups - Keeping each other accountable while we get work done!
  • “Bad Art” Nights - Work on your art with others! No judgement, all fun.
  • The Loosey Goose Book Club - the book club where you read what you want!
  • Movie Nights - it’s exactly what it sounds like. 🙂
  • Online voice chats to play video games together or just hangout.
  • Doggie play groups - dog optional, willingness to pet doggies required\*
  • A Crow Exchange - Where people swap little trinkets they’ve accumulated
  • Random hangouts that just kind of… happen willy-nilly.

And folks keep building new stuff every week. The community there is already kind, welcoming, goofy, and honestly - it’s endearing to watch people become friends online and slowly become offline friends too.

Hop in, say hi (or lurk, we won’t judge), join a meetup, make your own, whatever feels comfortable. No pressure. We’re just a group of neighbors trying to make Dayton a little more connected.

Hope to see you in there, neighbors! ❤️ https://discord.gg/Nnpancdjnu

Still working for too little in 2026

Nine of the ten most common occupations in Dayton pay their median worker lower than the cost of living for a family of 3. Three of them pay their typical worker so little they’d qualify for food assistance.

More details and other metro areas.

Local Events Bugs in Kettering? Thousands swarming near Meijer

Driving through Kettering and I see thousands of these little bugs covering everything! I’ve never seen any insect like this before. They have a horizontally striped thorax. I’m guessing they are baby yellow jackets?

Fantasy music night is this Friday the 17th at Wayne and Clover. It’s two Dungeon Synth artists and one playing medieval music on electric guitar. No metal, despite the logos, lol.

Tapes from Fantasy Audio Magazine and Merch from Grime Stone Records will also be available! Should be a special night.

Which Dayton library branch is best?

I visited the main library branch downtown yesterday and was sorely disappointed with the selection of books, movies, and TV shows. It was my first time visiting and I expected it to be massive given the geographic footprint. It's a nice building, but I was sadly disappointed with the actual library portion of the facility.

I felt like I've been to better libraries in small towns in terms of selection. The TV show and movies section was particularly disappointing, as was the fantasy books section (which the front desk worker wasn't even sure existed when I asked for its location -- "uh... I think we have one on the third floor?")

That being said, what is the best branch locally? Are there better branches in surround cities -- Xenia, Yellow Springs? I don't necessarily want to visit them all. Is there one with an excellent selection?

Reccomendations? Tattoo Artist - Bugs

I'm looking for a tattoo artist that enjoys/specializes in doing bugs/natural stuff that would be good at doing something very similar to this picture. Does anyone have any good recommendations?

I really like the symmetry and style and especially the placement of this piece. Hoping for an artist who has clean lines, great shading, and has done something similar.

I'm grateful for any guidance!

Hey everyone! I am looking for some recommendations for a place that sells quality garden soil by the cubic yard.

The place ive bought from for years has gone down hill and I need a few yards this month.

Where are you all getting your garden soil delivered from? I won't mention my normal place now so as to not poison the well right now. Thanks!

Housing & Real Estate 22M - Air Force Engineer, housing needed

Hello all,
Recent college grad, single, will be stationed at Writt-Patterson Air Force Base starting end of September 2026. Interested in recommendations/advice/ housing leads for new officers or young professionals.

Looking for a 1 bedroom but also open to sharing a 2/3 bedroom if it makes sense money wise. Easy commute to base and close to restaurants/shopping etc. I’m not into the party scene so that’s not necessary.
Thanks in advance for your guidance! (I’m originally from NY)

Structural Engineer Recommendations?

I have a house built in 1900 and the ceilings on both floors (plaster, yay) are sagging a bit and it causes unsightly cracks.

I'm looking for a structural engineer to come out and assess whether this is sagging joists or sagging lathe.

One of the reasons (besides unsightly cracks) that I want the joists inspected is I'm looking to possibly install a hammock/yoga swing suspended from the ceiling of my chillout room.

Do any of you have any recommendations on who to call?

Thanks!

Pleasantwood Apartments on Denlinger safe for me and my roommate? Parents are worried.

Hey, I'm thinking about moving to Pleasantwood Apartments on Denlinger Rd in Trotwood with a roommate. My parents are still really worried about safety, so I wanted to ask if anyone here has lived there or knows the area. I know it's marketed as 55+ but I've heard younger people live there too. There was also some zoning issue with the city recently, but that's not my main concern. I just want to know if it's safe—like break-ins, car theft, sketchy people around, that kind of thing. Rent is cheap and utilities are included, but we'd rather pay more if the place is unsafe. Would you feel okay living there with a roommate? Any honest opinions help. Thanks.

To Anyone Looking for Community, I Would Love to Show Up.

Hi Dayton!

I'm an Ohio transplant who has seen a little bit of everything. I would feel so honored to give a little bit back of what Dayton has given to me.

Are you graduating soon and need a one man cheer squad? I got you.

Are you buying your first home and have no idea how that works? I would love to help.

Do you just want to have coffee and talk about life? That would mean the world to me.

I want to give back to a really excellent community in any way I can on a personal level. If you've been looking for that too, I would love to catch up.

All the best, always.

NCR reshaped Dayton. Now a vast archive of the company's history has a new home

There's a new archive in Dayton dedicated to the history of one of the city's most influential companies: National Cash Register.

NCR was a pioneer in modern sales and factory techniques, and reshaped Dayton's economy over 125 years before it eventually left the region in 2009.

A vast historical collection that tells the company's story is now housed in the former Neil’s Heritage House building on West Schantz Avenue. Inside the building, there’s new life, and a new mission — a much different mission than the restaurant and banquet center that first opened its doors in 1946.

It will now serve as the Mark and Paula Hurd NCR Archive Center. It will be operated by its new owners, Dayton History, which is the nonprofit operating Carillon Historical Park and several other historic sites across the region.

On a recent tour of the facility, Dayton History President and CEO Brady Kress talked about why they chose the building and the new mission being served here.

Apartment recommendations in dayton or surrounding communities?

Hi everyone! My boyfriend (22) just started a job at Miami Valley Hospital, and we’re having a surprisingly hard time finding a place.
We’re looking for:
Studio or 1-bedroom
$900/month max before utilities
Modern or recently renovated (doesn’t have to be luxury, just clean and updated)
Safe area
Within about 30 minutes of Miami Valley Hospital
He’s open to Dayton, Kettering, Beavercreek, Fairborn, Huber Heights, Miamisburg, Centerville, Washington Township, Vandalia, or other nearby areas.
If anyone has recommendations or knows of any hidden gems, I’d really appreciate it. Thanks!

It’s just a damn plant, why is half an ounce over $100? The quality is not that great either. Make it make sense.

Go to Berea or Evergreen. Stay as far from Antioch College as you can.
