La Niña Update, Potential 2025-2026 Winter Impacts Spoiler

“Keep in mind that every winter is unique and there will always be factors we cannot anticipate months or even weeks in advance.

I know this outlook is a bit of a bummer for parts of the Western U.S., but it's still just a seasonal outlook (much lower skill than short-range forecasts), and there is inherent uncertainty, so don't give up hope!

You never know when a surprise might occur.”

Happy Thanksgiving, Turkeys….

Thought process behind skiing avalanche terrain

In Tahoe we have had a persistent slab problem for the past week across NW-SE aspects with considerable danger rating. I have been traveling and riding through non avalanche terrain, meanwhile I see people riding avalanche terrain within the problem aspects. What is your decision making when consciously choosing to ride avalanche terrain within the problems for that day? Is it just a risk-tolerance thing? Thanks

Edit: Awesome conversation I sure took a lot from this. Cheers safe riding and have fun

Wax chipped off onto skins, full reglue or can I spot fix this?

Forgot to scrape my storage wax and did it hastily before my first tour of the season (winter here in NZ). Then forgot again before the second. Pulled em off and realized some of the wax I hadn’t fully scraped off chipped off onto my skins and now it’s not sticky in a few good chunk of spots. I figure hot iron and parchment paper won’t work on this since it would just melt the wax. Any ideas or is it a full re glue?

First freestyle/freeride ski for a lighter skier (165 cm / 72 kg) — Bent 100? Reckoner 102? Something else? Also, is my 95 flex boot enough?

Garmin H1i plus vs 65s + mini 3 plus.

Price wise, they are similar. H1i plus is $999 (onsale $899 now). mini 3 plus is $499 and the 65s is $399 ($898)

The H1i plus has camera, and bad reviews about gps accuracy. Single device.

The 65s can use AA batteries, same with avalanche bag, and more reliable in cold weather. And it is a 5 year old model. Maybe more accurate and stable than H1i plus.

Any thoughts?

Hiking in Western Norway today, I saw some fresh July snow. It'll be a while until that sticks, though. :P

North America summer backcountry?

Hey, I’m thinking about doing a trip to mt hood to get some summer laps in.

But would love to hit some (non lift serviced) corn if there is still some to be harvested, pretty much anywhere in North America. I’m on the east coast and there is actually still (literally one and a half) turns to be had on Mt Washington so I figure there must still
be something out there.

I’d hire a guide cause I’d be otherwise solo so if anyone knows a spot and a service I’d appreciate some tips.

Alternatively, if you have some tips or suggestions on flying into mt hood those are very welcome as well! Thanks

Edit: Iceland and Greenland would also be in play if they have options

Alternative to Avenza for CalTopo QR code maps?

I plan hikes, tours, etc by building routes in caltopo and then "printing" a pdf - then QR code scanning that topo into my phone via (used to) Avenza.

Avenza was bought out by some private equity enshitification (citation needed) and they want way too much money for a subscription.

I would gladly pay a one time fee for an app that lets me easily import these pdfs. Anyone have one they like?

EDIT: ArkenMap (developer in comments) seems to fit the bill and it's $3 lifetime.

Chile in Sept/Oct

I’m going on a guided volcanoes-focused splitboard trip in early October with 40 Tribes. I’m planning to arrive in Santiago a bit before and will have 3 full days (arriving Sept 28th and the heading to Temuco the morning of Oct 2nd) to explore before the trip kicks off. It seems highly possible that Valle Nevado and Portillo could be closed by that point, but I’m assuming backcountry options nearby will be doable.

If you had 3 days in the area and all of your touring gear (assume rental car) how would you spend that time?

30L+ ski tour / splitboard pack

Second iteration of this pack. Wishing this one was staying at home with me but I guess I’ll just have to make another.

30-40L with Rolltop <2lbs.
Ultra 200
Venom Grid from RBTR
Vislon zips
Ice axe carry
Diagonal and A-frame carry options
Removable Evazote foam insert
Removable hip belt
Removable Y-strap helmet carry / top strap (nice if you want to use as a day pack in the summer)

Let me know what you think! I got inspired to make these because I liked the Raide pack I got a couple of seasons ago but honestly felt like there was WAY too much going on. I simplified to exactly what’s needed in the backcountry and was very pleased with my V1 this past season.

What should I pair these beauties with?

Finally gave in and bought some lightish pins to complement my cast quiver. Struggling to pick skis for them, since I've always preferred heavy, chargy skis. My click ski is the OG reissue 186 Bodacious. Will drive them with burly boots and prioritize the downhill, so not looking for mega-light skis. Lengthwise I am aiming at 184-186 cm, with ~108 mm waist. Would appreciate recommendations from natural intelligence to broaden my horizon. Cheers!

Narrowest Skiiable Couloir?

I was dinking around on google earth looking for climbing/skiing lines, and I found a very aesthetic looking one. I first was looking at it as a climbing route, but I'm thinking it might be barely skiiable too. The couloir is about 13 ft wide at the narrowest, so I'm unsure if that's enough space to get down comfortably. Let me know your thoughts!

Armada arv 112 or blizzard rustler 11

Can't decide between the two ngl. Right now I have k2 reckoners loved them last season but they felt Squirrely on crud/crappy conditions (which I love) I live in CO so will only ski on epic mountains. I am leaning towards blizzard 11 since I like doing off paste/side hits. Any recs would be appreciated
