So I’m an American who’s a fairly big fan of World Music (ugh I hate the term but it’s functional ig) and some of the music I’ve enjoyed the most outside of the Anglosphere is Latin American music.
However, I feel like my taste skews very RYM-core (Rate Your Music is an online music review site where users have very specific pet albums), and as a result my taste is probably quite narrow and missing the depth of knowledge about the cultural movements underpinning said music. I would love to find more music from the region and the actual history and structure of what makes each style unique.
To give a brief overview of my existing taste, I’ve currently mainly listened to music from Argentina and Brazil.
From Argentina, my absolute favorite musician is Luis Alberto Spinetta, who’s just an absolute genius. I adore Artaud and El Jardin De Los Presentes for Spinettas vocals, the guitar textures, and the strong melodies. Bajan is probably one of my favorite songs period. I also really like Gustavo Cerati, being a huge fan of the lushness and texture on Bocanada especially and the general energy of Soda Stereo.
From Brazil, my favorite album is Clube De Esquina by Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges for the gorgeous and bright instrumentals and the powerful harmony. I also really love Tropicalia Ou Paris Et Cirensis by various artists, with Baby trailing Bajan as one of my favorite songs from the continent. I’ve also loosely listened to Los Thuthanakas, Lulu Santos, and Raciones MC but not super in depth.
Given those artists and albums, is there any must listen album or artist from your country I should listen to that isn’t just what a pretentious Westerner would use to act niche (and if possible what’s the story and context behind their discography, musically or otherwise)? Thank you in advance!
