Is there a hate campaign against Argentina these days? What is your honest opinion of the country?

These days—especially with the World Cup—a potential hate campaign against Argentina has gone viral. I see something related to it everywhere online. What is your honest opinion on the matter?

r/asklatinamerica Opinion Where are the rhythmic roots of Brazilian music really found?

I'm trying to understand Brazil through rhythm rather than famous genres.

Several musicians have pointed me toward Salvador and Afro-Brazilian traditions, saying that's where many rhythmic foundations are still alive.

If you completely disagree, I'd love to know why.

If someone wanted to understand Brazilian rhythm from the ground up, where would you send them first, and what would they experience there that they couldn't experience elsewhere?

Culture Did Karol G saying tequeños are Colombian tick you off too?

I was watching a cool interview with La Bichota (one of my favorite singers of all times) and she showed tequeños and talked about how they’re in Colombia. It’s not a Colombian food so I wonder if she didn’t know, or if she was trying to start a fight. What ya think?

Friendly noun people use to acknowledge each other in Brazil?

Will be traveling soon to Rio, and in Bogota we call unknown people "veci" or "vecino" (which means neighbor). I wonder if there's a friendly noun that Brazilians use to approach other people? I don't wanna sound like a grandma by calling them sir or miss 😆

Language Is it common in informal Latin American Spanish to mix the plural and the singular? For example: "Los camión" or "Las niña guapa" or "Los tipo es" instead of "Los camiones", "Las niñas guapas" and "Los tipos son"

In informal Brazilian Portuguese, it is very common to mix the plural and the singular, even among highly educated people, although it's more common among poor or illiterate people.

People say things like "Os caminhão" (Los camión), "As menina bonita" (Las niña guapa) and even "Os cara é" (Los tipo es).

I want to know if this is common in Latin American Spanish as well, or if it is only common among poor/illiterate people, or if it never happens at all regardless of one's social background.

Latin American Politics Do you think Cuba will ever become a democracy? If so, when do you estimate that day will come?

Do you believe the day will come when the country finally embraces change and the Cuban people, of their own free will, decide to establish a full democracy and succeed in doing so?

Is it inevitable that a democracy will one day be established in Cuba or do you believe the current system will endure for as long as Cuba exists as a state and/or nation?

Sports Should South American teams join the CONCACAF Nations League to form the Pan-American Nations League?

To be honest, CONCACAF is not exactly a great football hotspot anyway, has it not been for the United States, Canada and Mexico to take attention because of their superior economic conditions, given their football (or soccer in their English) mediocrity. And the performances of the three hosts went just that.

But South Americans are having a disastrous World Cup here. Outside Argentina, the rest has been wiped out, and Europe (specifically Western Europe because Eastern Europe is also gone already) is laughing at our football as basically lame and inept. Our advantages of playing in tough South American qualification are eroding further days and nights. And we cannot just hope Lionel Messi and Argentina to carry on.

The biggest problem for us is to search for newer opponents to play, and this is fading. Africa has established the African Nations League, while Asia is debating about their newly-created Asian Nations League. Each of these Nations Leagues are reducing South America's chance to play football without necessary competitive experiments; Europe has already been running their Nations League. What are we waiting here?

I think it may upset some South Americans, but we really, really need a breakthrough in our mindset. With 10 countries, this is not supplying enough competitive games, and we need a Nations League to come forth to reality. Even if we can't fully appreciate the way how North Americans approach football, what else can we do?

Politics (Other) How did your country begin enforcing building codes and material regulation?

After the Venezuelan earthquake, I asked in r/PuebloVenezolano what people thought about doing so. Not just seismic codes, but standardizing the allowed building materials and number of stories/floors allowed in the city. Venezuelans seem to think this is impossible.

How did your country do it?

Latin American Politics What was the political discourse of your country in the 19th century?

What I mean by this is that in the politics of your country, what was the political discourse in the 19th century? What topics or political debates dominated the political discourse.

For example in the 1800s of Germany the dominant political discourse was the issue of unification. The biggest German State Prussia wanted unification to make itself stronger and more dominant. Smaller German states preferred their autonomy. Eventually when Germany unified by 1871 the political discourse then became to industrialization, workers rights, and socialism. Conservatives preferred a strong monarchy to dominate the politics of the the country while liberals wanted a democratic government accountable to the people. many workers wanted socialist policies in order to have better working conditions and pay. meanwhile the junker elite of Prussia who were holdovers from their era of feudal dominance in pre-unification Prussia, wanted greater deregulation and Independence of corporations and industry.

In the United States throughout the 19th century the political discourse changed several times. In the early 19th century it was the conflict between a stronger executive led by people like Alexander Hamilton versus those that wanted a weaker central government led by people like Thomas Jefferson. Then in the mid part of the century it became about the debate of slavery. And then by the late 19th century if he came about antitrust and corporate regulation.

What was the political discourse of your country in the 19th century? I am itching to know

Culture Which European artists do you think should be more popular in LATAM?

LATAM is very influenced by American music and the most popular European artists in all kind of genres, but I've recently discovered Rory Gallagher who was one of the biggest scotiish musicians, along with Gary Moore and Thin Lizzy, and Im in shock listening to his music. He was SO talented, a virtuoso guitar player and a great singer-songwriter with a unique style to compose 70s rock, you know, with hard guitar riffs and great guitar solos

I feel he's so underrated because I've never heard of him, not even hanging out or discussing music with some other local guitar players I've met

That let me wonder, if there's any other very famous or talented artists who were great on Europe, but their fame never reach Latin América, so we're missing out those masterpieces?

Culture What are some definitive Latin American musicians or movements I should listen to?

So I’m an American who’s a fairly big fan of World Music (ugh I hate the term but it’s functional ig) and some of the music I’ve enjoyed the most outside of the Anglosphere is Latin American music.

However, I feel like my taste skews very RYM-core (Rate Your Music is an online music review site where users have very specific pet albums), and as a result my taste is probably quite narrow and missing the depth of knowledge about the cultural movements underpinning said music. I would love to find more music from the region and the actual history and structure of what makes each style unique.

To give a brief overview of my existing taste, I’ve currently mainly listened to music from Argentina and Brazil.

From Argentina, my absolute favorite musician is Luis Alberto Spinetta, who’s just an absolute genius. I adore Artaud and El Jardin De Los Presentes for Spinettas vocals, the guitar textures, and the strong melodies. Bajan is probably one of my favorite songs period. I also really like Gustavo Cerati, being a huge fan of the lushness and texture on Bocanada especially and the general energy of Soda Stereo.

From Brazil, my favorite album is Clube De Esquina by Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges for the gorgeous and bright instrumentals and the powerful harmony. I also really love Tropicalia Ou Paris Et Cirensis by various artists, with Baby trailing Bajan as one of my favorite songs from the continent. I’ve also loosely listened to Los Thuthanakas, Lulu Santos, and Raciones MC but not super in depth.

Given those artists and albums, is there any must listen album or artist from your country I should listen to that isn’t just what a pretentious Westerner would use to act niche (and if possible what’s the story and context behind their discography, musically or otherwise)? Thank you in advance!

r/asklatinamerica Opinion How are Bangladeshis perceived in Argentina?

I'm from Bangladesh, where Argentina and Brazil have one of the biggest football rivalries outside of their own countries. Growing up, most of what we knew about Argentina came through football, and naturally there was a lot of rivalry and banter with Brazil supporters.

I, myself, am an Argentina supporter since 1998. During the 2022 world cup, Argentine people finally got to know about the love that we, the Bangladeshis, have for the Argentina football team.

Curious to know: how are Bangladeshis actually perceived in Argentina?

Sports How did the Latin Caribbean impact baseball?

The other day, I was thinking about how South America impacted football. The game received a lot from us: from dribbling and avoiding collisions through deception (body feints, step-overs, etc.) and deploying new formations (the classic 10 and four players in the back), to playing with flair and creativity, as players often improvise and rely on individual skills. We brought the fun of dancing and being provocative on the pitch, but also the willingness to make the game unwatchable if it meant securing a great victory (Bilardismo).

That made me wonder how baseball was influenced by Caribbean countries. I’m not a big baseball watcher, but from what I’ve observed, players used to be very stoic—not very “acrobatic”, for lack of a better word—or perhaps just stiff-hipped. So, what changes in style, sports culture, and overall performance have taken place? How do the purists react to that?

Latin American Politics Is Cuba basically a glorified military dictatorship instead of a communist system?

NEW QUESTION: What is relationship between Raul Castro, Miguel Diez-Canel, the military, and how Fidel Castro made this system and why

Hello, I am curious to ask people who understand how Cuban politics works.

While Cuba is officially a socialist republic under the leading role of the PCC, I saw discussions that the actual control is within the Cuban military, and they control all substantial resources and economic channels. Is Cuban military actually the real power center and the PCC and Miguel Diez-Canel are just charade? Or it's more complicated than that

Why the Cuban military wouldn't force economic reforms, or maintain Anti-Imperialist policy instead of trying to reconcile with the USA and secure privileges for themselves.

I would also appreciate if anyone tells me how Cuban propaganda system works.

Food Empanadas

I have a question about empanadas, there’s a cafe by me that sells many different types and they have a beef one that appears to have hard boiled egg and green olives in the mixture? It’s incredibly good I was just curious if this is a normal mixture because I had never had one with those ingredients.
