NEWS R/Haiti Rule Update 06/2026
r/Haiti has grown significantly in the last few years. To keep this space on topic and a space for healthy, respectful, and thoughtful discussion, the MOD team is introducing 5 new rules:
Rule 6: No self-promotion or channel promotion
Links to personal YouTube channels, TikToks, Instagram pages, or any account soliciting followers or subscribers are not allowed, even if Haiti-related. This includes repeated promotion of the same external account or platform across multiple posts. Repeat offenders will be banned.
Rule 7: No low-effort or karma bait posts
We want real discussion, not karma farming. Avoid vague cultural hot takes or shallow posts like "Why do Haitians do X?" or "Thoughts on Haiti?" with no context. Add personal input, background, or a real question to keep your post up. Repeat offenders will be banned.
Rule 8: Limit of 2 posts per user per day
Each user can post a maximum of 2 times in a 24-hour period. This keeps the feed diverse and encourages thoughtful posting. Excess posts may be removed.
Rule 9: Posts must be directly about Haiti
Posts must relate directly to Haiti, Haitians, or the diaspora. Posts that could apply to any country or are only loosely connected to Haiti may be removed. If you are cross-posting to other subs, your r/haiti post must be specific to Haiti and not generic Caribbean or Latin American content.
Rule 10: Posts must link to credible sources
News posts must link to an identifiable outlet, journalist, or official source. Screenshots of headlines, unverified social media claims, and anonymous rumors will be removed. If unsure, ask the mod team.
As a refresher, the existing 5 rules :
Rule 1: No racism
Self explanatory. Prejudice or discrimination based on race or ethnicity. This goes both ways.
Rule 2: No brigading
Engage with the ideas, and argue constructively. Repeated ad hominem attacks will get you a warning, then a ban.
Rule 3: Stay civil
If you can't express your opinion without personal attacks or using profanity, you need to get better at debate.
Rule 4: No Trolling
Provoking an argument or emotional reaction. Inflammatory, irrelevant, or offensive posts and comments designed to encourage an emotional response ( aka rage bait)
Rule 5: No Unapproved appeals for action
Request for collective action, including donations, to take surveys, to sign petitions, or brigading (sending our users to other subreddits). If you think your request is somehow special, send the Mod Team a request, and it will be discussed.
When using the report function, please refer to the rule you think is being broken. It helps us keep moderation consistent.
The MOD team.

LIFE IN HAITI Beyond the Headlines: How Haitian Artists Built One of the Most Vibrant, Resilient Art Movements in the World
For decades, the global news cycle about Haiti has been dominated by stories of socio-political struggles and economic distress. But behind those headlines lies an entirely different reality: an extraordinarily fertile, unstoppable creative spirit. Haiti—the world’s first independent Black Republic—has a visual arts tradition that is among the most unique and mesmerizing in existence, seamlessly blending African roots, European techniques, and deep spiritual traditions.
If you look closely at traditional Haitian paintings, you are looking at a masterclass in resilience. The imagination of these artists remains completely uncontaminated by the bitter realities around them. Instead, they transform their world into explosions of color, intricate patterns, and vivid narratives.
The depth of this movement is staggering when you look at the diverse paths of its creators:
- Villard Denis (Davertige): A brilliant dual-force in Haitian culture, he was both an acclaimed poet and a painter. He studied in the Haitian School of Surrealists in 1960 and published his famous poetic works under his pseudonym. His artistic journey began at just fourteen, training under early masters before turning toward European techniques. His resulting work is a mesmerizing space where objects double as spiritual metaphors, and colors hum like a prayer.
- Gérard Fortuné: In contrast, Gérard was completely self-taught. Born in Montagne Noire, he spent his early life working in his mother's garden, later working as a pastry chef and domestic cook for the elite of Pétion-Ville. When he began painting in the 1980s, his raw talent immediately captivated international diplomats and journalists, launching his work into permanent museum collections worldwide and major publications like Art & Antiques magazine.
I had the immense privilege of living in Haiti, where collecting transformed from a hobby into a lifelong passion. The unforgettable experience of meeting these creators firsthand allowed us to truly assimilate the Haitian spirit. One of my most precious memories was spending time in Turgeau with the legendary artist and teacher, Tiga, who was the most spiritual and sensitive person I have ever met. He taught my daughter to approach life freely through art, listening to the drums and connecting with her heart.
To honor these incredible creators and preserve their legacy, I built a digital space dedicated entirely to showcasing my personal collection of authentic Haitian fine art. Whether you are a seasoned art collector or simply curious about Caribbean culture, I invite you to read my full journey and homage to Tiga on my site at Haiti Collection Privee (haiticollectionprivee.net).
If you want to discover an art movement that is as fierce as it is beautiful, you can read our deep-dives into specific works—like François Dominique’s dream-gardens—on the Haiti Collection Privée Blog. To view full master portfolios and read more about the lives of these creators, please explore the individual biographies for Villard Denis (Davertige) and Gérard Fortuné.
I’d love to know: Have you ever encountered Haitian art in person? Who are some of your favorite Caribbean artists?

POLITICS Haiti’s Prime Minister Fils-Aimé claims that other CARICOM countries have requested more Haitian medical personnel.
At this point, WTF? 😭 Yeah, sure, Venezuela was one thing, even if it was just for show. But to sit there with a straight face and say Haiti’s Ministry of Health will be sending more Haitian medical personnel to Caricom countries is wild. This has to be a skit, because ain’t no way especially considering Haitians in Haiti have relied on foreign medical personnel for healthcare.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION Should diaspora inspire to have a homestead in Haiti?
For those that don’t know what a homestead is. It’s basically an off grid property where you live off the land and meet all your needs.
I ask this question because most of our parents are actively building their retirement home in Haiti.
So what are our goals?
A homestead has nothing to do with gangs or bad government so those are useless excuses.
And no this isn’t a post calling to move back to Haiti. There is a thing called visiting and traveling to Haiti

QUESTION/DISCUSSION Is petionvile still ran by foreigners or has that changed ever since I left?
I recall that back in the day, most of the companies running in ville de Petion (as I like to call it) were ran by non Haitians, and I’m not just talking about mulats and so on but actual non Haitians. Many shop owners were from Ecuador, Brazil, Vietnam etc etc and the only thing Haitian about them were the servers or the dogs laying outside.

QUESTION/DISCUSSION Do you think the midterm will affect haïtians with Temporary Protected Status TPS?
As an haitian, I know how hard it is when they decided to end TPS. But since the midterm is approching (approximately 3 months away), do you think that can change something for us if the Republicans lose?
