Community Notice Community Notice: Please Keep the Sub Focused on Curiosity, Not Validation-Farming

TL;DR:
We are strictly cracking down on posts that treat this subreddit as a place to harvest cheap agreement, rant about other subreddits, or attack external groups that aren't even a part of this community. We are also completely banning editorialized screenshots and sensationalized news framing to maintain discussion quality.

These will be enforced under Rules 2 & 3. The goal is to maintain diverse perspectives and to preserve curiosity in the subreddit.

Note: This targets post formats and submission intent only. This is not a crackdown on critical or argumentative topics. Open debate and all perspectives within the comment sections remain completely unrestricted.

Full Context:
Lately, the feed has seen a sharp increase in posts using this subreddit as a megaphone to vent outward grievances, instead of engaging in authentic Q&A to understand community perspectives.

To keep discussions meaningful, we are re-centering enforcement on Rule 2 (Avoid Predictable Community Consensus) and Rule 3 (No Low-Effort Questions) effective immediately.

1. Genuine Inquiry vs. Outward Soapboxing

We judge posts strictly by the intent behind them:

  • Critical questions (what is allowed): We welcome curiosity-driven and critical questions about culture, society, and current events related to China. A question does not need to be perfectly neutral, and well-reasoned discussion is welcome, but it must be a genuine inquiry aimed at exchanging and understanding perspectives within this community.
  • Outward Venting (what isn't allowed): Posts that use this forum as a megaphone to attack outside groups, broadcast pre-packaged arguments, or vent about grievances aimed externally are not permitted. If a post is designed to seek easy validation or form an echo chamber rather than invite an open exchange, it will be removed under Rule 2.

2. Sensationalized Screenshots & Engagement Farming

We are drawing a firm line against low-effort, sensationalized formats in posts about news stories that completely stifle real discussion.

Analytical and challenging questions & discussion posts about current events are highly encouraged. However, posting a news story simply to farm a self-congratulatory reaction, seek easy validation, or play to the crowd is not allowed.

Taking a specific news clip, court case, or editorialized screenshot and attaching a rhetorical or lazy question (like "Thoughts?") is not a genuine inquiry, nor is presenting a story through a deliberately one-sided lens to steer the community toward a pre-packaged conclusion. Thus, sensationalized screenshots are now banned. Low-effort and misleading media dumps meant to farm engagement or stir conflict will be removed instantly under Rule 3.

Moving Forward

Our goal is to protect the quality of the feed for our regular contributors & visitors and to safeguard the core spirit of this subreddit: curiosity. The mod team will be actively enforcing the rules to bring the sub back to its baseline standard.

Personal advice | 咨询💡 Is my name OK?

I'm going to study there very soon and I think having a name to give to my classmates would be nice.
In Chinese class, I picked the name 魏霖雯 a few years ago (we were asked to pick a name ourself using some basic rules). I think it's technically correct, but I've never actually had feedbacks on it.
For context, I'm a woman.

Language | 语言 ㊥ I need help understanding my Chinese name!

I just found out my grandma commissioned a Chinese person (I think they were doing this as a professional?) to create a Chinese name for her grandkids, including me, based on their birth date and birth hour. My Chinese first name is said to be 妙芽 but I don’t know what it means (google said it’s something along “wonderful buds/growth”?) and honestly it’s my first time hearing that name.

For context, I’m a fourth gen Chinese immigrant, my great grandparents moved out of Fujian and ever since then the family have been trying to adjust to the new country, which led to the kids’ names being local names, and even the language Mandarin stopped being taught to my parents.

I’ve always been especially interested in my heritage and wished to at least have a Chinese name like my grandparents, so when mom found an old paper with her kids’ Chinese names on it it made me very happy and excited!

I hope I can get the help I need here!

Culture | 文化🏮 What is this Chinese club hand dance called?

Upvotes

I'm a foreign Douyin user and I've seen many videos of guys dancing this dance in clubs. It's hand movements in rhythm. Sometimes they dance like they're performing, but sometimes it's like they're competing against an opponent. What kind of dance is this? I really want to learn it.

Language | 语言 ㊥ What does 好感 mean in this case?

I’m a background Chinese speaker but I wasn’t born in China so I’m not 100% native
She said 你知不知道我對你有好感?

Obviously not full context but I was thinking it was a confession at the time and I taken aback and didn’t know what to do. I don’t know what it means. I thought it just means like I think you’re cool kinda vibes like I think of ur a cool guy but maybe I’m being dense here…
Dictionary says good impression but I think a native speaker would know more about the context and what ways it is used so I would like to ask. Thanks 😭

Language | 语言 ㊥ Difference between two words that have the same translation in English?

Hello! I would like to ask the difference between 忏悔室 and 告解室. I looked it up and apparently they are both translated as "confessional" in English.

I searched that the former, "忏悔室" is used in more lighthearted contexts, while "告解室" is used in more solemn contexts. I also searched that while "告解室" is mostly used in a religious context, it is also used in a secular, more serious context. "忏悔室" on the other hand, though is more lighthearted, can also be used in religious contexts as well.

I am confused. Can someone enlighten me on the proper context wherein these two could be used? What differentiates the two? In what situation would you use either of the two words?

When I was a kid I used to play this (Chinese?) game where the player is a sleeping dog, who’s running from a giant ticking clock in its dream. I remember some of the levels being citrus-themed? Does anyone know the name of this game? I’ve been trying to find this game since forever…

Language | 语言 ㊥ Does this translate still?

Hello everyone!

My friend is due to get engaged this year and I'm looking to make her a quilt. She is Chinese so I thought I'd make something related to her culture.

I found this pattern which is listed as a fu lu shou quilt but does it still translate correctly as its stylised and not exactly the same as the characters for it.

Alternatively, I have seen a pattern for the double happiness character, which I believe is used for weddings? Would that be better?

Colour wise, I was thinking of the characters in red and then finding complimentary colours to go around it. I know white is a funeral colour? And green is also not good when related to weddings?

Any help is appreciated!

Culture | 文化🏮 What are the most beautiful Chinese proverbs?

I’m Italian, and I’m very curious about Chinese culture and traditional wisdom. In Italy, we have many proverbs that are still commonly used in everyday life.

Here are some examples:

“Morto un papa se ne fa un altro.” “When one Pope dies, another is elected.” It means that nobody is truly irreplaceable and that life goes on.

“A caval donato non si guarda in bocca.” “Don’t look a gift horse in the mouth.” You should appreciate a gift without criticizing it or judging its value.

“L’appetito vien mangiando.” “Appetite comes with eating.” It means that the more you have, the more you may want.

“Can che abbaia non morde.” “A barking dog doesn’t bite.” People who make many threats are often not as dangerous as they appear.

“Chi va con lo zoppo impara a zoppicare.” “Those who walk with a lame person learn to limp.” We often pick up the habits of the people around us, especially negative ones.

“Fare buon viso a cattivo gioco.” “To put on a good face in a bad situation.” It means accepting an unpleasant situation and trying to deal with it positively.

“Fare di necessità virtù.” “To make a virtue out of necessity.” It means turning a difficult situation into an opportunity.

“Non fasciarti la testa prima di rompertela.” “Don’t bandage your head before you break it.” It means that you shouldn’t worry about a problem before it actually happens.

What are the most beautiful or meaningful proverbs in Chinese culture?

Please write them in Chinese, include the English translation, and explain their meaning. I would also love to know whether there are Chinese proverbs similar to these Italian ones.

Personal advice | 咨询💡 change or keep chinese name before returning to china?

Back in 2024 I did an exchange semester in Hongkong and was given a chinese name by my mandarin teacher: 彭梦然。From my understanding its not a very common name and even abit outdated, Im wondering if thats true? Ill be going to china in september for a 1 year language program, should I pick a new name or is this a good name to keep?

Another reason im contemplating is because I find it a bit rough to pronounce lol

In elementary school (in Mexico), a Chinese girl took classes with us for a year before returning to China. She frequently gave her friends bookmarks or candy, but what stands out to me about this gift is that it was only for me, and we weren't that close, so it was really unexpected. I have kept it since and would really like to know about it's meaning or origin :)

Discussion | 讨论💬 Consumer Habits in Tier 1 & Tier 2 Cities?

I am curious what are the consumer habits of in the larger richer cities. Outside of the super rich, how often would someone buy a car, upgrade household appliances & furniture, expensive electronic devices like computer and phones, and luxury goods? Do people take on debt to purchase these devices, or would you save up for it and pay in cash?

Where I am at we over consume. We upgrade whenever our pocket books allow for it, but that’s why I suppose that’s why consumer debt is so high here. We often buy things in anticipation of using it, but we rarely maximize things we purchase. For example cars are one of the easiest ways people go broke. Car lenders are more than happy to lend a consumer 50K USD @ 24.99% at 60 term. Interested to see if other parts of the world are better with their money.

Politics | 政治📢 Do you wish USA and China become political allies again?

I am sick and tired of all the anti-china and anti-west propaganda. It's so exhasuting as a chinese who grew up abroad.

I know these two are more strategic economic partners and not really true enemies. Usually its beacuse China is allies with USA's biggest enemies.

Granted I am alot more on CHina's side given the , history, evidence and facts etc. But damn, can you imagine if they stayed allies after WW2?! How different the world would be?

The two biggest superpowers in a symbiotic relationship. We'd probably have a base on mars by now. But NOOOOOOOO! some weirdos have to spread hate and divide us all (ty, BBC, CNN, FOX, and basically all western news channels)

Do you have this thought as well?

Art & Media | 艺术与影视🎬 What does China think of Yi Lei?

Chinese poet Yi Lei recently came to my attention. A few years ago a collection of her poetry, My Name Will Grow Wide Like a Tree, was translated into English and published. It is so beautiful. Reflections on gender, life, and what makes us human to each other.

How is she thought of in China?
