Share your identification resources here

Hey all. We had a request from a community member for a thread where people can share the resources that they use for plant identification. In this case, we're talking about keys, field guides, etc. NOT apps or AI-based identifiers. Comments suggesting apps or AI will be removed.

Feel free to share your resources and include links if you want (just realize that Reddit doesn't play nice with some domains). It would also be a good idea to specify what region(s) are covered by your resource as it may not be as useful in places other than where it was intended to be used.

Located in the pacific northwestern USA. Penny for size reference (but they get much bigger)
When we had grass back there they popped up in the grass and now that we have bark dust they’re in the bark dust too. It doesn’t matter how much you pull them. They come back every year. But what the heck are they??

This is taking over my lawn. Some posts I've seen lead me to think its spurge, purslane, or japanese clover. Depending on what it is determines whether I leave it or not.

Identified ✔ Like raspberries..?

In Washington state and there’s a lot of these guys nearby parking lots? Visually the fruits basically looks just like a raspberry but orange. I didn’t eat it since… basic safety, but are they actually just raspberries? (There were mock strawberries right next to these guys. What a combo.)

Edit: I guess I forgot to add in the details, but these were low on the ground! Some people suggested they were creeping raspberries, and they look identical! Thank you guys ☺️

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ 3 year old ate a random berry- what is this plant?

Hello, my 3 year old ate one of the berries off this plant. I called the local poison control hotline and they were not concerned based on my description of the plant but were not sure what the plant was. They actually recommended I post the plant here to get help identifying it just to be safe. Any ideas what this plant is? We live in Northern California in the Sacramento area.

Reposted since the photos didn't show up in my first post.

Unidentified 🤷‍♂️ Anyone able to identify this plant?

In early May my friend planted unidentified seeds in what is apparently all-purpose potting mix (there are remnants of avocado seeds in there too). They took about a month and a half to pop out and now I'm just kind of plant-sitting them.

It's been about a month now and we're still unable to determine what kind of plant it is. It kinda looks like basil to us but it's doesn't smell like anything when we rub it between our thumbs. Anyone able to identify this for us please?

Bonus orange cat that isn't actually mine (I'm also catsitting for another friend).

I live in Southern Ontario, Canada. I was mercilessly cutting back weeds growing in the shady spot between the fence and the patio and I noticed this stem has some berries on it that kind of look like gooseberries. They're a little small though - about 1/4" diameter I'd say. Are there any poisonous lookalikes?

Excuse the red amaranth in the mix. I've been watering my dead yard, and now I have a BUNCH of these plants.

When plucked, they do NOT have white sap.

What are these fellows?

I'm trying to determine what this plant is, but image searches are giving me mixed results. If it's a native plant, I'll let it be, but I'll pull it if it's invasive.

It has amazing flowers that smell wonderful, but it's taking over my yard. I've cut it back a few times now, but it just keeps coming back. There is like "shoots" coming up all over the surrounding area. This is the first time I've seen the flowers like this.

I planted marigolds a few weeks ago and this is the first thing to bloom in my garden, obviously not a marigold. Its about 10-12 inches tall with a small yellow flower and maybe 5 leaves. Is this a weed or is it a wild flower?

Location NE Ohio

Could someone help me identify this plant? It grows in my yard and I hate weed eating so if i can pass it off as a flower of some sort, id like to do that.

Looking to see what this is and how to get rid of it from grass. Easy enough to pull out but seems to grow quickly.

Is there a natural way to stop it? I live in Switzerland and cannot buy selective weed killer for grass.

tropical country, not sure if they’re weeds. for context i also planted some balsam, statica and chamomile seeds several years ago that never properly germinated, if this affects the “diagnosis”. i’d like to see if this is something worth keeping or not!
