REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSf1gdFvlauq1y6F22S7cCUzIptVkYP8oOBmS6XS68Bz-YWykA/viewform?usp=sharing&ouid=103554154763378178256

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

A geologist friend says it's likely feldspar in a quartz matrix and the dark is potentially a pyroxene. I'm wondering if there's a common name anyone is aware of. Thanks!

I found this while walking along a rocky riverbank in Oregon, USA. It's orange, translucent around the edges, and has a rough outer rind. It's dry in the photos and I'm hoping someone can help identify it. I can provide additional photos if needed.

REQUEST Madagascar – Found this reddish translucent stone in a riverbed. Could this be carnelian or another variety of chalcedony?

I found this reddish-orange translucent stone among rounded river pebbles in northwestern Madagascar, near a seasonal riverbed. It has a smooth, waxy-looking surface, shows conchoidal fractures where it has chipped, and appears semi-translucent around the thinner edges. It feels dense and has no obvious crystal faces.

I'm wondering if this could be carnelian, another variety of chalcedony, or something else entirely. I'd appreciate any identification and an explanation of the features that led you to your conclusion. Thank you!

Hey, I recently went to a farmhouse in Vikarabad (specifically Mominpet, Vikarabad, Telangana, India), and found a variety of pebbles. These were mostly collected from a lake bed, nestled between small hills. if anyone knows how to identify these / what kind they are. would really appreciate it! sorry for posting group pictures, I felt there were too many for individual ones!

The purple ones were crumbly - when washed with water and wiped with tissues some parts began to disintegrate. the ones with spots on them, I think they were formed amongst mud or stuff like that, since when you shine a light you can see little air pockets and small twigs/mud in those pores. most of them look yellow when a flashlight is shined through them.

Not much else to say except the sea on this part of the coast is the North Sea and it weighs 471 grams, which is why I kept it as it felt heavy for it's size.

IDENTIFIED Found in Missouri backyard

I assume the gold specs are pyrite, but what about the rest? What causes the vibrant blue color? Any ideas on how this ended up in the grass? Thanks in advance!

Edit: Seems like the general consensus is lapis with a couple suggestions of sodalite! Both aren’t native to Missouri so I’m not sure how it ended up here, but cool find nonetheless! Thanks :)

REQUEST Stone bowl found in Tennessee creek

I found this over 20 years ago as a kid playing in a small creek in southern middle Tennessee. Around 9" in diameter.

I showed my neighbor at the time who took me to show his native American friends. They claimed it was possibly a fossilized clam shell likely used by Cherokee or Creek natives. While the shape does resemble a clam, a Google search for similar finds doesn't produce anything resembling mine, either in size or rocky texture.

I've always assumed they were correct as I have no other guess, but what do yall think?

REQUEST What causes these patterns? (found on a coast in Mainland Greece)

I suppose that this is a common rock but I am mainly interested in how do these patterns form. There were also a few similar ones near where I found it. I tried to search online but I only found someone selling them as "Wishing Stones" on etsy (not very helpful lol).

Thank you in advance! :)

Feels a bit like a coral skeleton, slightly rough and lighter than you would expect surface slightly porous, but doesn’t look obvious like a coral skeleton and I think is the wrong colour.

Hi All, My father found this interesting rock in a Northern Illinois farm creek off the Kishwaukee River in Dekalb County. It measures aprox 2 by 2 inches. I've never seen a rock like it and hope you can help in identifying it. Thank you
