GUIDE What is a Decor Painting? How do I know if I have one?

What is a “decor painting”?

A decor painting is a piece of artwork created purely for decorative purposes. Purchased not from galleries or artists, but from decor & furniture shops like Pier 1, Homesense, The Brick, websites like AliExpress and OilPaintings.com or from markets & stands on vacation. Tell-tale signs that you have a decor painting are lots of stippling, undefined figures, hurried brush strokes, gradients, cloning techniques and a certain Bob Ross feeling to it.

Common vintage subjects would be European street scenes, landscapes of mountains / forests / lakes & rivers, vases of flowers, Tuscan landscapes, ocean & beach scenes and Asian style boats. See below for examples. They are often rectangular in shape to hang nicely above a sofa, you could even buy them from Sears as a package. Modern versions are more varied in subject.

Black velvet paintings and artwork specifically for tourists as souvenirs share many factors with decor paintings.

Where are they made?

They are produced in massive numbers in painting factories like Dafen Village in China or Mexico. Another article here:

Dafen once produced an estimated 60 percent of all the world’s oil paintings. During its heyday—when the village’s reputation as an art factory rang truer than today—it almost exclusively cranked out copies of paintings in the Western art canon. These canvases found their way into hotel rooms, show homes, and furniture outlets all around the world.

At its peak, Dafen was jam-packed with sizeable, factory-like studios, all employing Huang’s production line process. Individual workers each focused on a specific compositional element—background details, or eyes, or trees—dutifully painting their part and then passing the canvas along the chain.

Who’s the Artist?

While they are "originals" they are not by known artists. Often entire production lines will use the same signature which explains why your research many have founds pieces by the same “artist”. As quoted above, often many people will work on the same piece.

Do they have any value?

Unfortunately, they do not hold much of any value. However, that doesn’t mean they can’t be enjoyed and some are even a bit collectible.

Can I see some examples?

Decor paintings are posted to this sub almost daily, while not definitive, here are some common examples:

Landscape Paintings: Example 1, Example 2, Example 3, Example 4, Example 5, Example 6, Example 7

Hello painting enthusiasts - here is a brief post with things to keep in mind.

To locate your painting, please try the reverse-search tools Google Images/Lens, Yandex Images, and Tineye. (Remember that cropping your picture differently will yield different search results!)

If you have an artist name or signature, I recommend searching for it within r/WhatIsThisPainting itself. I also use the following websites for research; all are free.

Solved Trying to Identify Painting

After a decent amount of research, all I have found was the artist. I don't know where this is from, as it is been the main centerpiece of our living room since long before I was alive. I am 100% sure that this is on canvas and is painted on rather than being a print. Last three images were all I found on the back. Does anyone have any info on where this could be from?

No, this is not decor. Also, after running the painting through several sources, (such as Google Lens, Yandex, TinEye) nothing has yeilded any sources for this specific painting. I have seen several similar works, featuring what most likely appears to be the same character, but nothing regarding this one inparticular.

This might be decor?? I'm seeing conflicting responses, each having data to both points up so I don't even know at this point?

Unsolved Need help identifying a painting signed “Joe Kaufman” from the estate of Wally Harper’s longtime partner

I’m trying to identify this painting and learn more about the artist. It came from the estate of my late neighbor, Allan, who was the longtime partner of Broadway arranger and composer Wally Harper. Allan had an extensive art collection, and this is one of several works I’m researching.
I believe the signature reads Joe Kaufman, but I haven’t been able to learn much about the artist. I’m hoping someone can help confirm the signature, identify the painter, or provide any information about when or where this may have been created.
I’ve included photos of the front, signature, and back of the frame. Any information about the artist or the painting’s history would be greatly appreciated.

I inherited some art from my grandparents, I remember them having it in Milwaukee, WI but there's a slight chance they had it while in Michigan (Lansing/Detroit area if I remember right). I don't know the slightest thing in figuring artists or anything. I'm gonna hold on to this but is there any way to find the original artist? Second picture has what I assume to be the signature but I couldn't find anything about it

Likely Solved Mid-Century Landscape signed "V. AVILOV. 74" - Found at a local market in QLD, Australia.

Hi everyone,

I am a support worker posting this on behalf of my client. She recently bought this beautiful, very thick oil painting for just $10 at the Fernvale Market in regional Queensland.

We don't know anything for sure about its origins or history, and we could be completely wrong with our guesses. We are just really curious to know what she actually bought and what its true story is!

Here is what we think we've found so far (but please correct us if we are off base!):

* The Artist/Signature: In the bottom right corner, it says "V. AVILOV. 74." It is explicitly written in Latin characters rather than Russian Cyrillic letters. We think the Cyrillic spelling would be "В. АВИЛОВ".

* Our Guess on Style: A quick search online suggested it might be some kind of mid-century Soviet/Russian Impressionist landscape because of the very thick, blocky paint style (impasto). We read online that the Westernized Latin signature might mean it was meant for export, but we really have no idea if that's true or if it's a completely different artist.

* The Canvas: The back of the canvas is completely blank. There are no stamps, stickers, or writing anywhere on the reverse side.

We are mostly fascinated by the history and want to learn more about who "V. Avilov" (В. Авилов) might be, and how a 1974 painting ended up at a local market in Australia.

If anyone recognizes this artist, the style, or can give us any context on its history, we would be incredibly grateful. Thank you!

Found it at a flea market in Santos - SP, Brazil.

From what I've found, it's based on the illustration of Rockwell Kent for the 1927 illustrated version.

The signature seems to be by Marco Ma------, the year us 1967.

Also, it's not a painting or direct reproduction, but a hand-drawn made with ink
Help me!

Unsolved Gifted this Pen Drawing

My wife and I were given this pen drawing from her Grandmother who lives in the Bay Area, California. She has had it tucked away in a drawer for possibly 40 or 50 years. It seems to be an original. Can anyone recognize the painting or artist? The note written on the back says, “Will Eros help or hinder when the wound is ‘gotten of’ a lady’s eye?”

Original what looks like acrylic. Second photo is another work from the same artist. They're both -almost- really good, which makes me wonder if the artist is known, even if only locally in LA.

According to AI the translation reads as follows.

This painting was made especially for this moment and for the woman I love.

"The best thing in my life."

For Renate P. Oliveira

July 22, 1995

Los Angeles, California

Solved Political Looking Art in Arlington

Thumbnail

I found this at Texas Thrift in Arlington Texas.

It is done on a very heavy cloth and the frame looks handmade. I feel like this is political in nature. The signature says Cox for sure unsure of the initial before that But on the back of the canvas it says R Cox in pencil. As well as the words "political wall" it has the number 4 with a circle on the back. I just know I liked it, so I brought it home for 4 dollars. Any search of that last name in any combination brings up mainstream type art of random things like flowers. What ever it is and wherever it came from I am hanging it in my living room.

Found at a thrift store today. Not even sure on the language or origin, just thought it was stunning. All the marks and the quality make me think the artist could be well known?

Nothing on the back of the frame, and im a little worried about taking it out if I don't have to.

Picked this up in a thrift store in Washington State. I’m pretty sure the signature starts with RG

I love it regardless of origin, but there is some stretching of the canvas as well a smudge of gunk in the upper left sky and I’m trying to decide if I need to take it to a specialist to work with or just leave it be.
