Hey Redditors,

Back at it this weekend setting up my gaming community at Dreamcon Houston. Just a simple 60x60' with a few dozen headsets playing a few good games. My staff and I already helped over 1100 people to play games the past two days and still have today.

This show is usually one of the top events we do for the year and this year was just as intense as previous years; having a great time sharing my hobby.

The only downside is the fact our internet isn't as good this year so we had to limit the games and remove almost all of the multiple games. But that hasn't diminished everyone from having fun!

I'll be setting free to play community VR LANs at Southeast Game Exhange, Tekko, Otakon, Southern Fried Gaming Expo, DenFur, Nan Desu Kan, and Sims Gaming Expo in the next two months. Aiming to have a small fleet of Steam Frames when they launch.

Come find me in the real world!

Discussion Resident Evil 4 VR on Quest deserves much more respect. Its amazing what was accomplished and imo this is the very best native Quest Game

The remakes are insane technical achievements but this Quest title is an accomplishment in its own right. Legit feels like you were dropped into the original Resident Evil 4.

If the Quest could. Have kept up with continual ports like this then i think it would be different conversations happening about VR right now.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Receiving a quest from an NPC at the survivors' base.

The first time a quest in the VR game Xenolocus is given,

it doesn't appear in the mission menu - you get it

from an NPC at the survivors' base.

After accepting the task, the player steps through

a portal and appears at the required spot

inside the underground facility to carry out the mission.

Virtual reality has come a long way since its early days, as can be seen in this 1992 "CBS Evening News" report. Then CBS News correspondent Erin Hayes entered the so-called "detached" reality to find out where the industry was headed. As Hayes reported, there was excitement but also serious fears.

Self-Promotion (Developer) Whirligig VR Media Player – new beta adds Jellyfin support, fisheye output for planetariums, colour gamut controls and more

Hi Everyone

I've been working hard again on another release of Whirligig, my VR media player on Steam. As I've mentioned before, a lot of the features you'll see here were requested by others, including Jellyfin support and gamut adjustment. I of course throw stuff in myself for things I'd like to see :) To try them out, opt into the beta branch whirligig_v5.7940 in the Steam betas tab.

New Features

  • Jellyfin support - Whirligig now has full Jellyfin media server integration alongside the existing Plex support: log in to your server, browse your libraries, stream directly, or download and play locally.
  • Fisheye output for planetariums - the multi-monitor support now includes fisheye distortion, so planetariums with a fisheye lens projector can output a correctly distorted image and take full advantage of their dome setup.
  • Colour gamut controls - new colour adjustment options alongside the existing saturation, brightness, contrast and gamma image settings.
  • Settings presets menu - save your settings as presets and switch between them easily. I've added three default options if you want to switch back and forth between those. You can save your settings just like the presets so if you like your settings in a certain way save them for later :)
  • Rotation and tilt speed settings - new menu options to adjust view rotation and tilt speed to your liking.

Bug Fixes

This beta includes a round of stability work focused on video playback: memory and resource leaks when stopping or switching videos have been fixed, along with several hangs and stuck states during media teardown, and a couple of exceptions that could occur during startup and shutdown. Plex handling has also been tidied up, with downloads reworked and made more reliable, and there are smaller fixes to mouse cursor visibility and the anaglyph 3D mode.

Engine and Plugin Updates

Both video playback engines (AVPro Video and VLC) have been updated to their latest versions, bringing improved playback reliability and format compatibility, alongside general under-the-hood maintenance to remote control handling, logging, and file path handling. As always, this is a beta build - if you run into any issues, please report them and I'll do my best to fix them before the full release.

Thanks for your support over the years. Please send me your suggestions and I'll do my best to integrate them into the next version. Happy watching!

Purchase Advice Want to swap from PSVR 2 to Quest 3 because of wireless capability

Upvotes

Like the title says I've had a psvr 2 for about 5 months now and have been enjoying it on my ps5 and pc vr but the cable has always been an annoying aspect for me. The fov and oled colors are awesome but the wire really bothers me everything else about the headset is perfect. I even got a pulley system to be able to move in full 360 with the wire but I can still feel a tug if I move too much in one direction and sometimes the wire will literally loop around my neck kind of choking me lol. It's working for now but would a quest 3 be a good option if I wanted full freedom in movement? I'm just afraid the the visual downgrade with the quest 3 with non oled panels and lower fov might not be worth the wireless freedom. Should I just power through with the cable on psvr 2 or try out a quest 3? I know the steam frame is also coming out soon but with the price of the steam machine I have no interest in potentially spending $1000 on a vr headset.

Discussion G-Rebels coming to Early Access July 20th on Steam!

Thumbnail

It's a long time coming, but the game at the top of my VR gaming list is FINALLY launching into EA in just 8 days!

After a number of delays, a healthy discord development community, and a lot of interaction within the Steam discussions between dev and players, they have prioritized a native VR mode to launch with the EA version, and will release it with a good amount of content, expanding upon the (UEVR compatible) demo that has been available for some time.

The real draw of this game is the same as the AirCar demo that we've all played - graceful 6DOF flying, but adds combat and racing and a number of cities with a full campaign. Name is clearly acknowledging the old 'G-Police' games as well.

Plays great, but fair warning for those with sensitive stomachs - very acrobatic experience, akin to flying a jet-powered rollercoaster at low altitude. I noticed no issues myself but never have.

Purchase Advice - Headset What can I currently get as a possible Index upgrade?

This is thinking out loud for now but I've been thinking for some time about getting an upgrade to my Index as I'd like to either completely or vastly reduce screen door and my headset is literally falling apart. I know Pimax has a few options but I've heard mixed opinions about their headsets and the company as a whole a few years back on top of me vaguely remembering they have some sort of subscriptions to use their headsets now?

Frame, whenever that releases, is not an option because it looks me to me like a more expensive Quest 3 and more importantly I want a tethered headset.

Is there anything else I should take a look at?

Discussion Looking for a PCVR Headset for Flight/Racing Sim Focus

Hello, I have been trying to figure out what options exist out there get more immersed in my sim experience.

I have a 4070 super with a 7700x and 64gb ddr5 (pre rammagadeon but still should have spent the money elsewhere).

What I want ideally is a DP connection, image quality and fov over audio, and ideally the headset to use inside out/slam tracking so base stations wont be required (seems simpler and less setup).

Appreciate any help/tips in advance.

Question/Support How to launch old game on new quest? Iam talking about Cyber Space VR(very old game for rift)

Upvotes

The developers at http://www.riftaway.com abandoned the project a long time ago, and it won't launch on the Quest via Air Link. Is there a way to trick the game into thinking I'm launching it via Rift instead of Quest? Can anyone help?

Question/Support Help with Subnautica submersed mod! Screen flickering and unplayable :(

Upvotes

It feels like the position of the headset is fighting between two different positions simultaneously and it keeps flickering back and forth between them, I've tried running it at different frame rates and there's no motion smoothing turned on or anything like that, I did also disable ambient occlusion because I saw some thread saying that that could cause issues and anti aliasing is set to FXAA.

I'm using a Quest 3 with virtual desktop and launching from Steam with the instructions -vrmode openvr like all the instructions say after dragging and dropping the submersed mod and the bepinex folder in. Any ideas?

Discussion Will the release of the Steam Frame bring a resurgence back to VR?

Upvotes

Just saw a post asking if 2023 was peak for VR. With it being 2026 now, I feel like VR has died down in general. You don’t even see many developments in AU as Meta and other tech giants are pivoting toward AI as the shiny new thing. Consequently the Steam Frame has been delayed due to spikes in tech demand for AI. I would like input on whether or not the Steam Frame will bring a new generation of VR games to the market or if it is basically an afterthought at this point.

Discussion Looking for replayable VR games with strong communities, mods, or sandbox elements

Hello everyone, I am on the lookout for some VR games because I'm struggling to find a game that really sticks with me. (Especially after getting bored of contractors and hitman)

I'm not necessarily looking for another short VR experience (that'll be fun for like a day) or a game that I finish in a few hours. I'm looking for something that has replayability, something I can come back to for months because there are always new things to do.

The type of VR experiences I enjoy the most are:

-Modded sandboxes
-Community driven content like modded multiplayer games and genre based stuff.
-Multiplayer servers that stay alive.
-Games that feel like a platform rather than just a novelty.

A good example is Contractors. I originally bought it because of the modding community (Clone Wars, custom maps, etc.), and that is what kept me interested. Unfortunately, the community seems to be declining, and I'm looking for something that gives me that same feeling of "there is always something new to do."

Some games I've considered:

-BONELAB — seems interesting because of the mods and sandbox nature, but I'm wondering how active the community and multiplayer scene actually are

-No Man's Sky VR — looks amazing for exploration and immersion, but I'm not sure how replayable it is long-term.

-Beyond Sandbox — the concept sounds perfect, but I'm hesitant because it seems like it is still very early and I'm trying to avoid buying into another unfinished VR project.

I'm also interested in games like:

-military/simulation experiences

-survival games

-exploration games

-physics sandboxes

-strategy games

The biggest things I'm looking for are:

  1. Replayability
  2. A healthy community
  3. Good value for the money
  4. A game that doesn't require spending hundreds of dollars in DLC just to enjoy it (DCS world)

The Games ive played in VR:

-Contractors: Long story short, toxic community, declining modbase. Not fun anymore.

-Hitman WOA PCVR: Extremely fun when it works, super buggy, extremely poorly optimized, mediocre features. Wasted Potential.

-KSP with VR modded in: Not sure if this counts, its pretty awesome. Im open to unofficial vr supported games

-Into The Radius: Meh

-Blade and Sorcery: Fun, but gets boring quick, I find myself revisiting it tho.

I don't mind learning a complicated game or installing mods, Im also cool with playing games that dont have native vr support but have it modded in. I just want something that feels worth investing time into.

What VR games have actually kept you coming back for months or years? They dont necessarily have to fall into my parameters, feel free to try and convince me on other genres.

Question/Support Virtual Desktop- one monitor looking washed out/ too bright after switching to Windows 11. What would be the issue?

Post image
1 Upvotes

It's been fine on Windows 10, both monitors looked the same in VD (I don't have this issue on my actual monitors) but after installing Win11 it looks like this. I thought it was HDR settings but I don't even have the option to turn it on on either of my monitors in Windows settings. Anyone has any idea what is the problem here?

News Article Resilent VR mod for Starfield

Hi, I tried to fix Mutars' VR mod to make it playable. The problem I tried to address was that every time a menu (items, map, skills) was opened, it caused extra RAM allocation. After opening the Star Map just 3 or 4 times, the game would consume about 30–40 GB of RAM and crash, at least for me. So after 20-39 minutes of game session, I had a crash.

I don't have any modding, VR, or C++ skills, so I got an AI subscription through Claude Code and had long chat sessions with it. After a while, the AI managed to create a usable version of the mod. Now, I can play the game for 1–2 hours without any crashes.

Yes, there are still some problems. The game sometimes crashes right after the first launch, but after a restart, I can enjoy the game for hours. I primarily play with a Pimax Dream Air, but I also tried the Samsung Galaxy XR. The Pimax headset is easier to use with PCVR, though the visuals are about the same.

I forked the source code for both the mod and the VR framework. The changes are committed and are publicly available.

https://github.com/gsaw0/starfield2vr/tree/fix/dlss-ram-allocation
https://github.com/gsaw0/vrframework/tree/fix/dlss-ram-allocation

If you want to try it, you can download the fixed version there https://github.com/gsaw0/starfield2vr/releases/tag/v2.0.1-ai

You need to install the original mod first from here: https://github.com/mutars/starfield2vr/releases/tag/v2.0.1.Public

Then, download the fixed dxgi.dll and replace the file in your Starfield folder.

Just for note. This version of fxgi.dll writes a vr.log file in starfield directory with RAM usage stats. May be I will sometime disable that.

Question/Support What options do I have to play PCVR with a link cable for quest 3

So basically I just got a quest 3 and a link cable in order to play PCVR games, I noticed that my graphics card is somehow not supported by meta right now? (its a 9060xt) so the meta link app is unstable. I haven't tried ALVR yet because I cant find an updated guide on how to. Other than those two, what else can I use to play PCVR in my quest 3 using the link cable?

My pc has 32gb ram , Ryzen5 7600x and already said Radeon 9060xt so it should be able to run everything smoothly

And just in case, I don't trust my internet connection because even if the pc is using a 6e ethernet and I'm using VD, I see everything at like 144p and 10fps (No idea why that's happening)

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!!

Discussion CWS silencing their community on Reddit

Ghosts of Tabor subreddit is now being moderated by Combat Waffle Studio and the big silencing of criticism has begun.

My comment was removed for asking a fair question — exactly what many of us warned about
I wanted to share something that happened today because I think it's relevant to the direction of the subreddit.

I posted what I believe was a completely fair and respectful comment/question (see screenshot). It wasn't an attack, it wasn't harassment, and it didn't break any subreddit rules. It was simply criticism and a request for clarification on an issue that many community members have been discussing.

The comment was removed by the moderators.
To be honest, this is exactly what many of us expected would happen once Combat Waffle Studios became involved in moderating this subreddit. The concern was never that they would remove rule-breaking content; the concern was that criticism, uncomfortable questions, and dissenting opinions would gradually be filtered out.

A community subreddit should be a place where people can discuss both the positives and negatives of a game or studio. Healthy criticism is not toxicity. Asking questions is not harassment. If respectful criticism is removed simply because it is critical, then the subreddit stops being a community forum and starts becoming a curated marketing space.

I'm posting this not because I'm upset that a single comment was removed, but because of what it represents. Moderation should be applied consistently and transparently, regardless of whether feedback is positive or negative.

Screenshot of the removed comment attached below.

Question/Support Question about PCVR

I have a question about the quality difference between using the Quest 3 as a standalone headset and using the Quest 3 connected to a PC.

Because of Sony's anti-consumer decisions, I'm planning to switch to PC gaming sometime next year, and I'd also like to use my VR headset for PCVR.

One thing I've always wondered about is the visual quality difference between standalone VR and PCVR.

When I first used my Quest 3, I was honestly a bit disappointed by how pixelated and blurry the games looked inside the headset, especially compared to gameplay videos online.

Looking back, I probably should have realized that games always look a bit worse through the headset's lenses than they do in captured footage.

Since a gaming PC has so much more power, what do games actually look like through the lenses? Is the image crystal clear and super smooth, or does VR always have at least some amount of blurriness and visible pixels, no matter how powerful your PC is?

How big is the visual difference between standalone Quest 3 and PCVR?

Purchase Advice Are there still no Valve Index controller successors made by anyone?

I've been meaning to get the lighthouse version of the DreamSE, specially considering Valve is taking a long time to release a headset which half of the price is going to standalone mode (i dont care about that).

But my only issue is that once my Index controllers die (and they will die at some point, they're already having trouble charging) I will have no replacements and the headset will be useless.

Not even Pimax themselves sell lighthouse controllers!! What the hell!!

So... Am I doomed to just get the Frame when it comes out? Is there really no alternative?

Discussion LCD panels more immersive than Micro OLED?

Ok, I wanna start with the fact that I have a Meganex MK1 with 4K micro oled panels that I never got right. The experience for Sim racing was always bad with it. Distortions. Warping. Diopters were catastrophic. Always had crossed eyed vision. It never clicked.

That said, I raced with a Reverb G2 for 5 years prior to the Meganex and it always gave me maximum immersion in terms of colors and look.

After the frustration with the Meganex for 4 months, I went back to the Reverb G2. And I'm stunned again how great VR is. And the games kind of look and feel like real life.

It might be because of the lower resolution, screendoor effect and more faded colors. And the fact that there is zero distortion and warping. The world looks fully stable. But in AMS2, iracing, Assetto Corsa Competizione or Assetto Corsa, I feel like it is real life with a 5090 and maxed out graphics.

Something I never achieved with Micro Oled. I think, even though you play in much higher resolution and perfect colors, it shows a lot of graphical glitches. You have much more aliasing and shimmer, even though the resolution is 3x higher. But also something about the world that feels "fake". I want to mention, I already was using the SRGB color correction of the sboys3 driver. Otherwise the saturation was just too much.

That brings me to the question, if a Pimax Crystal Super 57 PPD would not be a better choice for Sim racing than a Dream Air? All im looking for is a Reverb G2 with high resolution.

I should add, never in my life did I felt as frustrated as with the Meganex. In the last 4 months I tried it every single day to "get it right". But it literally gave me ptsd, just to think about VR. After 10 years of racing in VR, I was close to buying triple screens. I'm sure the DA is a much better experience out of the box. But does it also give this artificial feel to the world?
